Nemeses Reunited

Another highlight from Loring’s return to DAYS is a scene between Liz and her longtime nemesis, Marie. Decades ago, the two characters were both involved with same man, Neil Curtis. “It was so much fun, because I got to be snarky, and she was fabulous,” says Loring of co-star Maree Cheatham(Marie), who brought her A game during their confrontation. “There was so much energy and so much focus, and she was just perfection. Actually, I had never met her before, because she wasn’t playing Marie when I did that storyline.” The late Lanna Saunders played Marie from 1979 to 1985.)

While Loring and Cheatham were thrust into playing adversaries on screen, they quickly bonded off camera. “I said, ‘I would love to sit and talk with you a little more off set,’ ” shares Loring. “So we did that. We decided we wanted to get together, and I went to her house. She has beautiful pottery and has all these amazing collections. Then we went to lunch and just had a wonderful visit. It was really nice.”

Suffice it to say that Loring had a wonderful time during her DAYS return, and she’d consider popping back into Salem again for a visit. “If it was a one-day sort of thing, sure,” says the actress. “But I started supporting myself because I had to when I was 18. And so by the time I got to a certain point and I had been working for 54 years, I went, ‘You know what? That’s enough already.’ I have six grandchildren now. I want to be there to pick them up after school. I worked through one of my children’s [sons Brennan Thicke and Robin Thicke of Masked Singer fame, with her late ex-husband, sitcom star Alan Thicke] Christmases on Days of Our Lives, because we didn’t get any days off. So I remember not being there for my family, because of certain commitments I made to the show. But I’d do another quick thing like this where I could come into town and stir something up.”

Loring has many memories from her first run on DAYS too, including the Liz-Don-Marlena and Liz-Neil-Marie triangles, her character’s stint in prison after accidentally shooting Marie, and Liz herself getting shot on a few occasions. “I used to go out on weekends and do concerts, which I had been doing long before I joined the show and after I left. I would say, ‘I played Liz Chandler on Days of Our Lives.’ People would ask, ‘Why did you leave?’ And I said, ‘Well, because they shot me every two years, whether I needed it or not,’ ” Loring delivers with a chuckle, noting that she also fondly recalls Liz’s many performances at Doug’s Place. “’You Were Always On My Mind’ was the song that I always sang. That was Liz’s song for Neil.”

They never actually taped Christmas Day, but they would sometimes on Christmas Eve. Brennan and Robin were hospital kids in at least one of the Christmas story episodes during her time on the show. They finally got Christmas week off the last year she was around for that, in 1985.

Here are the pre- & post- Christmas Day tape dates for her time on the show from 1980-1985.

12/24/1980; 12/29/1980

12/23/1981; 12/28/1981

12/23/1982; 12/27/1982

12/23/1983; 12/27/1983

12/21/1984; 12/26/1984

12/20/1985; 1/2/1986

@asafi Thanks for the article. I'm glad Maree and Gloria managed to have some time to bond off the set and that she enjoyed filming the scenes. I hope someone may have a longer interview with Gloria about her DAYS run if she is willing.

Burbank conditions update...

Via: https://outlooknewspapers.com/burbankleader/news/what-to-expect-in-burbank-as-eaton-fire-continues/article_dabb044e-cdfd-11ef-8b2e-3b3a8d55a245.html

There are currently no evacuation orders or warnings in effect in Burbank after a fast-moving brush fire in the Eaton Canyon area exploded in size today, topping 13,000 acres, claiming five lives, destroying hundreds of structures and prompting school closures through Jan. 10. The fire was 0% contained as of 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Burbank fire officials said that wind conditions will continue through the evening, and there is still an increased risk of wildfire in Burbank, both from the ongoing Eaton Fire or from fast blowing Santa Ana winds.

According to Eric Baumgardner, Burbank Fire Department's Emergency Management Coordinator, residents should be prepared with supplies and an evacuation plan.

"Any time that we have fires around the area, people should be vigilant. Don't wait. If you feel that the fire is coming, evacuate on your own," Baumgardner told the Leader. "If you feel that you're gonna be threatened, don't wait for us to tell you to evacuate. If you know there's fire in the area, like if there are residents in the Burbank, Glendale area that feel uncomfortable with the proximity of the Eaton Fire, then they should start packing up stuff now and have it ready."

Baumgardner gave an assessment of Burbank's fire risks and overnight weather conditions in an interview with the Leader.

"Right now, observed winds are actually lower than what the National Weather Service forecast predicted," he said. "We're actively monitoring the Eaton Fire. Of course, that is of concern to us with the direction of where we are in comparison to the Eaton Fire. The smoke isn't going directly over Burbank, but it is going pretty close to Burbank, over Glendale near our southern border. So that is a concern, because the direction that the smoke is traveling is the direction the fire is traveling at this time."

Baumgardner said that the fire is currently holding its position in the Angeles National Forest and the surrounding foothills, in Pasadena and La Cañada Flintridge.

"For it to travel to us — not that it's not a possibility — it would have to cross the 210 freeway and then potentially from where it's at right now, the 2 Freeway and then get embedded in the Verdugo's moving toward us," he said. "If it continues laterally along the face of the Angeles Forest there, and it gets further into the area above Glendale, then if it jumps the 210 freeway on the back side of the Verdugo's, it would be entrenched on our side."

The city is prepared with "trigger points" or locations that — if reached by an active fire — would prompt fire officials to begin evacuations within the city of Burbank.

"We are monitoring. We have put in contingencies," he said. "The faster and higher the wind speeds, the shorter that contingency is going to be."

All this talk about Marie, plus my finding a clip of another catfight, this time with Mary (see below), makes me glad that we never had a situation where she had a knockdown-drag out while in her habit.

@JAS0N47 thanks for the Burbank news update you posted.

There have been additional fires popping up.
Every time I check, it seems like there's another fire.

As of January 8, 2025:

Area near Hollywood Boulevard under mandatory evacuation. Checking Google maps, that's about 12 miles (by car) from Burbank Studios. I just checked with someone who lives near the studio and they are preparing to evacuate if necessary.

    • AMC was about a decade later so things may have changed by then, although maybe they never approached her anyway. She joined Santa Barbara in 1985, when they didn't seem interested in bringing back Hope. SB ended in 1993, so JFP could have asked her back, but I doubt she did. I can't see Elvera as Delia, but she could have worked well as Faith - she had a glimpse of a strong personality alongside warmth, which only one Faith ever managed (Catherine Hicks).
    • IIRC, FC reruns aired for awhile on Lifetime, way before the network became the Women in Peril Channel, lol.
    • PAM!! YES!!! You have jogged my memory. She worked at Cedars. She's mentioned in a write-up of Tim's history in the show. It says she was a nurse, but I seem to remember she was a secretary at Cedars, working for either Ed or Sarah. (It's almost 50 years ago, so I definitely could be wrong). I'm certain she was an unwed mother. I recall reading an interview with the actress, Maureen Silliman (I looked it up, that's her correct name, LOL). She started on the show just before the Dobsons started writing it. She was shocked to get a script that said her character had been pregnant since she hit town. I remember a scene where she told Tim she was going to leave SF for a better job for her daughter's sake (really, I think she was upset he was serious about Rita). I don't remember them getting married and leaving town, but according to "Who's Who in Springfield" that's how the characters were written out. Mattson did All My Children for several years, so she might have been persuadable. Here's an interesting factoid I recently learned on these message boards: Elvera Roussel was in the running to play Delia on RH when the show first hit the air. How wild is it that Mattson played Delia for a while? (Though from what I saw of her performance, she was miscast). It's hard to know if Roussel would have been a good Delia. You'd think she would have been better suited to playing Faith Coleridge, but who knows? She didn't get to show a whole lot of range as Hope.
    • If I were to do an EON reboot, I think I would start at the beginning, with Mike Karr leaving the police force in order to begin a new career as an attorney, and dealing with his wife, Sara's, crooked family.
    • I don't know if it was the writing or performance but I felt like we finally got to see the real Ted. Especially the way he talked to Martin when confronted, felt like a completely different person. He felt darker and like a total liar who was mad he got caught. I expected him to be remorseful and want to apologize to each and every family member who he came into contact with but he seemed like he didn't care. It completely changed how I view him and it makes me wonder if this is the direction they're going to take Ted in with the recast.
    • Tessa clarified a few years ago that she is gay and not bi.   I find it offensive that the show is teasing her with Daniel. Mariah told Sharon she went emotionally/mentally to a dark place, and while she was out of town on business she got drunk and did something bad.  But Mariah didn't say she cheated.  The show wants us to assume that, but she didn't say that.  She could have taken drugs or who knows what.  All we know is that she feels shame and doesn't want Tessa to know.  Mariah says the inner darkness is due to the longterm influence of Ian in the past, and she hasn't healed from that. With a *good* writer, we could have organic conflict in the Teriah marriage, without cheating.  But JG isn't a good writer.
    • Was that before his accident? I think it was. Most of us have never seen him before it happened.
