Streep as Margaret Thatcher

Oscar-winner Meryl Streep is poised to play Margaret Thatcher in a film of the former Prime Minister's life. The part will reunite the Hollywood star with Mamma Mia! director Phyllida Lloyd, who is making the biopic.

Backers Pathe and Film4 said in a joint statement last night: "We can confirm Meryl Streep has expressed interest in playing the role of Margaret Thatcher. Discussions are under way with her representatives.

"But no agreement is in place. The film is scheduled to shoot at the end of the year."

Streep, 61, is keen to team up again with Lloyd after the pair - as star and director - had such a huge hit with Mamma Mia! which grossed more than £400million in 2008.

I guess the Iron Lady won't be singing and dancing...

I think that casting a British actress, one who lived through the Thatcher era, might have been a better move, but Meryl will probably do a great job.

Weirdly enough, though I don't really like her, she is too... cold for me sometimes, I think this might work. Like, really work.

We'll see.

Streep has been extremely cold and twitchy in her recent performances, so I don't know about this. She used to have some natural charisma as an actress, and seems to no longer have it.

I'd rather a British actress too...

You don't like Meryl Streep? That's like saying you don't like breathing oxygen. But okay, it's your opinion.

This is weird casting. MS is obviously talented but so are some British actresses, and equally so. Oh well, should be a good movie anyway. Who will play her boyfriend, Ronald Reagan?

While I'm sure there is confidence in her talent, I'm sure the name 'Meryl Streep' was a BIG deciding factor in not getting a british actress
