On the Monday, August 3 episode of”Beyond the Gates,” Randy (Maurice P. Kerry) had tongues wagging, Bill (Timon Kyle Durrett) and Joey (Jon Lindstrom) looked the Grim Reaper in the eye, and Mona (Karan Kendrick) and Kat (Colby Nixon) didn’t know they both had their magnifying glasses out for the same man.
Kat Gets An Eyeful
Kat was observing Randy at Orphey Gene’s when she was interrupted by Mona, who asked how “trouble in couture” was doing. Mona was glad to hear that Kat was healing well from her liver donation surgery, while Kat was awed to learn that Mona had started a cancer support group at her church, inspired by Anita’s chemotherapy journey. Kat was shocked when Mona excused herself and walked right up to Randy at his table.
In Fairmont Crest, Hayley (Marquita Goings) was still stewing over having found Dani’s (Karla Mosley) sunglasses and became enraged when she called Randy only to get his voicemail; Hayley proceeded to snap Dani’s shades in half. Back at the diner, Randy ignored Hayley’s call, prompting Mona to surmise that a woman was trying to get in touch. Randy said he no longer had “an old lady,” whom Mona presumed to be “Miss Lick My Fingers” Lynette (Dominique Madison). Mona conceded that she was overstepping; it was just that she cared about Randy, though she didn’t know why. Randy also couldn’t pinpoint what drew him to Mona, and Kat looked on astonished as Mona placed her hand on Randy’s.

Mona could tell that Randy didn’t feel right about the work he had to do for Joey. She related that she was also employed by powerful people and guessed that Randy was experiencing a “slow leak in the soul.” Randy laughed that not everyone could be perfect like Mona, who replied that her mother had taught her that all she had to do in life was “stay Black and die.” Mona became concerned when Randy slipped that his job could kill him, though he played it off. Randy did admit that he enjoyed talking to Mona, since he’d had no one to confide in since his best friend had died. Mona expressed the hope she’d see Randy in church as he left.
Kat made a beeline for Mona and asked him how she knew Randy. When Mona said she’d been trying to save Randy from himself…and Joey, Kat assumed Randy had gambling debts, but Mona clarified that Randy was in Joey’s employ. Kat noticed that Mona’s eyes had lit up around Randy, but Mona had barely finished pooh-poohing that idea before Kat scurried out.
Devil’s Work
Joey was surprised to find Bill in the back room of the Lakeview Casino and assumed he was there for a favor. Bill negated the claim, and the kingpins traded knowing insults before Bill finally admitted that he’d had a health scare. Joey was taken aback when Bill further divulged that he was unnerved because he had no idea what was actually wrong with him. Acknowledging that he had never seen Bill anything but unflappable, Joey asked if Bill was taking stock of his life. Bill corrected that he actually had come to ask Joey to do something for him…and that was to look out for his daughters should he meet his demise.
Joey wondered why Bill didn’t just task the Duprees with that assignment. Bill said that his former in-laws had only ever really needed him to make their problems disappear; Joey concurred that the socialites didn’t like to get their hands dirty. Therefore, Joey agreed to watch over Chelsea (RhonniRose Mantilla) and Naomi (Arielle Prepetit) in the event of Bill’s death…if Bill would do the same for Vanessa (Lauren Buglioli) should Joey pass on. Bill accepted readily just as Mona walked in, wondering what the men were talking about. Neither gave Mona an answer, and, after Bill left, Mona asked Joey to play a round of poker with her.

Amused, Joey couldn’t imagine what the churchgoing woman would want to play for. Mona suggested that she was playing for Randy’s soul, then proceeded to whip Joey at cards. “I’ll be damned,” Joey said purposefully to the lady of faith. He deduced from her words about Randy that she wanted him to fire his sidekick, which he wasn’t apt to do, so Mona requested that Joey at least send Randy on less dangerous work. Once Joey affirmed that Randy knew what he was getting into, he invited Mona to come back to gamble with him anytime, as long as she didn’t try to save his soul. Mona clucked that it was likely too late for that and departed, leaving Joey to allow privately that Mona was probably right.
Tea Time
At the country club, Dani’s giggling over an annoyed Hayley texting her a photo of her sunglasses led Vanessa to believe that Dani had left them at the Hamiltons’ house on purpose just to get a rise out of Hayley. Dani could barely get Vanessa to believe that her shades had simply fallen out of her purse, though she did admit to being giddy over the idea of taking up space in Hayley’s head. Anita (Tamara Tunie) arrived for a massage and wondered what her firebrand daughter had done now.
Conversation briefly pivoted to the EP that the Articulettes were planning to release, on which Anita, Sharon (Bonita Brisker), and Tracy (Maria Howell) would record new vocals to classic tracks and add in the contributions of Barbara’s that had been cut. However, not wanting to let Dani off the hook, Anita got her to broach the subject of going to Bill’s to complain about Hayley sending Chelsea and Naomi away. Anita was upset to learn that her granddaughters had been treated so poorly and decided to skip her massage when Dani theorized that Hayley might be having an affair.

Vanessa didn’t think that there was anything romantic going on between Hayley and Randy, especially since Bill was her meal ticket. Dani and Vanessa were stunned when Anita told them about having caught Hayley and Genoa City’s Kyle Abbott (Michael Mealor from “The Young and the Restless”) together in the wake of the tornado, both looking guilty. When Dani still felt it suspicious that Hayley kept being seen with Randy, and that Hayley’s story about him was different every time, Vanessa explained how Randy and Doug (Jason Graham) had grown up together in Philadelphia, with Doug moving to the Washington, D.C. area before graduating high school to study medicine.
Anita threw up her hands upon Dani surmising that Hayley could be sleeping with both Randy and Kyle, saying, “she can chew gum and open her legs at the same time.” The matriarch exhorted Dani to live her own life and forget about whatever Hayley was or wasn’t doing before taking her massage anyway.
Men In Black
Chelsea was still at Naomi’s house, remaining irked that Bill had asked them to call first before visiting him, which had been Hayley’s idea. The sisters had to grant that their father had seemed sincere, but they disagreed about Bill feeling like he’d been put in the middle; Chelsea was of the opinion that it couldn’t be easy for Bill to navigate between his kids and his wife. Yet, the Hamilton girls vowed that they wouldn’t do anything to increase Bill’s stress level, given his tenuous health.
After Chelsea got a juicy text from Kat promising “tea,” she and Naomi expected Kat when there was a knock on the door…but found an apologetic Hayley instead. Hayley made little progress in mollifying her stepdaughters and lost them when she noted that their calling first before coming over would ensure they didn’t catch her and Bill in an intimate moment. “I’m gonna hurl,” Chelsea gagged as Naomi returned Hayley’s favor and threw her out. Kat burst in and wondered what Hayley had been doing there, but her cousins waved it off.
Kat relayed how she’d learned that Randy/Sammy worked for Joey, and, following up on Dani’s thought that Randy was Hayley’s lover, Kat concocted the scenario that Joey had sent Randy to collect gambling debts from Hayley, who in turn had to be having sex with Randy to quell the situation. Naomi didn’t think Hayley could be siphoning off Bill’s money to pay Joey, not when Bill kept a close watch on all his bank accounts from having grown up poor.
The trio discussed the reasons Randy could have an alias, and whether Hayley was after love, money, or revenge, as Kat had learned motives for wrongdoing from her beloved crime podcasts. Dani joined them and passed on what Anita had said about seeing Hayley and Kyle Abbott together. But when Dani added that Vanessa had spoken of Randy being from Philadelphia, Kat realized that was Hayley’s hometown as well and was certain that they knew each other somehow. Naomi insisted that Hayley would be a fool to cheat, especially since Bill had Hayley sign the same prenup Naomi had signed with Jacob, canceling out any settlement in the event of infidelity.
Concerned after her talk with Anita and Dani, Vanessa called Randy and met with him at the atrium. She noted that it had been a long time since she had caught up with him, and he reflected that Doug had become a doctor because of him. Vanessa remembered hearing that from Doug, but Randy expounded that it had been Doug feeling helpless after Randy had been shot that had truly driven Doug. Randy sighed that he had stayed in “the life” after Doug had left Philly, and both he and Vanessa got emotional sharing that they each felt they had let Doug down.
Vanessa declared Randy family and reminded him that Joey wasn’t the only high-powered man that Randy had to worry about – Bill was also a concern, Vanessa went on, warning Randy to be mindful of whose houses he hung out in. Randy didn’t realize that Vanessa was hinting about the supposed affair between him and Hayley.
Hayley met with Bill at the country club, crowing about how she had made amends with Naomi and Chelsea. Bill was glad to hear it and only wanted everyone to get along. Hayley smirked that all she’d ever wanted was for Bill to get exactly what he deserved.
