LOL usually me and Dee are on the same page (though I do have some weird memories of a post where I foolishly thought admitting that I was partially black would make her agree with me more... lol) But I stand by my 70s comments.

Because it was the 70s that largely cemented the reputation and success of shows like One Life, GH, Doctors, AW, Days... We're not just discussing new shows, but shows created earlier that peaked in the 70s.

The 70's brought a lot of existing shows some degree of critical success.

But when the decade boasts only three soaps that were created & continued to succeed it can't be rated a success even with great ratings.

So? it's ratings in the 70s--the decade we're arguing--were very strong. It was after that they fell.

We're not arguing anything.

You're arguing the ratings.

What I am stating is that there was a plateau reached for better or worse in the 60's that 70's Daytime was never fully able to take advantage of.

And the 60s had Bright Promise, Morning Star, Nurses, Brighter Day, Road of Life, Young Dr Malone, Young Marrieds, etc etc all end (at least 10 more) So?

And yet at the end of the 60's Dark Shadows, General Hospital, The Doctors, Another World, One Life To Live & Days Of Our Lives all made it through & continued to succeed the decade they were created in.

you're dead on--I'm sorry. I did misquote you. I guess my point is, if they were bad for all three networks, what decade do you see as good?

I'd say the 60's were the best overall, the 70's a mixed bag & the 80's a lucky aberration.

No-it's one of DeeDee's rules!

Luv ya D!!!

LOL

Dark Shadows was never more than a cult hit ratings wise (as Dan Curtis admitted, if it had been on ABC in the70s it prob wouldn't have lasted its first year). OLTL might as well be a 70s soap--it had under 2 years to go to survive the 60s. The thing is I'm not arguing NEW shows, but the 70s for soaps in general--all soaps. Even huge 60s hits like ATWT never got the money and rating success they did in the 60s that they did in the 70s..

The fact that many soaps were created in the 70's shows that networks had plenty of faith in the idea of the genre. How many soaps were created in the 90's?

But it's not so much building as reaching a plateau.

Yes a plateau which means it was the height of their appeal and success--ie their best decade. the fact that it started them off on the road to ruin, means nothing.

Not really.

A plateau in that it there was significant growth in SOME areas but a significant failure in others therefore good but NOT their best.

No, a plateau means the highest it gets, it's not going further up. IE they had their top success.

Your logic is positively illogical.

Yes, a plateau is not defined solely by one area.

So even if Daytime's highest ratings did come from 70's the inability to build on previous decades success & in some ways creatively regress undercuts it.

Your logic is the logic that's not.

OK so even though on the outside it seemed the 70s were the top decade, because soaps faltered in later decades, the 70s is not the top because obviously this faltering stemmed from the 70s?

That made me spit perfectly good vodka tonic.

I feel like Stefano and his evil curling iron have derailed this thread so that we won't talk about NBC's failings.

Curling iron? My horrible 80s curly hair is all natural :)Sorry :P Well I still think the 70s--early and mid--were the only time NBC really had a stable line up.
