Wait, what was the Sharon Newman explanation? I must've missed the few episodes that cleared that up.

I don't think there ever was an explanation. They said she had been mentally ill since she was a teenager. Then later they tried to claim she was this way because Cassie died. Her mental illness, which seems to be kleptonymphomania, appeared and disappeared based on the week. They claimed she was doing fine because she was carrying Nick's child and she would go nuts again if she didn't have them, but then she was perfectly sane after she lost Nick and Faith.
