Y&R: Question about the ratings drop

Ok, so I was watching this video and I have to ask you guys a question about this fact or myth that I'm always hearing about.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYYDIDckogk

I wanted to asks did the viewership really drop when Moore and Rowell left the show?

I always read and heard claims from DC, Branco, and so on that "Rowell took 2-3 million viewers from the show" or "Moore took one millon viewers with him" but I never saw any proof of this or debates about it. I wonder if drop has more to do with behind-the-scenes changes than anything else?

Is it true or are people really smoking the pipe? And, do you think Rowell and Moore can really bring viewers back if ever came back?

IIRC, when Victoria Rowell left the show did see ratings losses throughout the summer, but they rebounded by the end of the year. I'd say it was no more than 500,000 viewers. I do think that she was a ratings draw and I attribute a lot of LML's success on the character of Drucilla. Now if she returned would she have the same impact? I doubt it because MAB and co write a show that is too dull and vanilla to service the character. I can't imagine how she'd be written. I'm thinking it would be a mess.

This is a hallmark of all soaps, which is one of the reasons why they are out of touch. As far as the 1MM+ loss when SM left -- it was the culmination of three things the happened in about three months: 1) Ryan's death; 2) Mac recast and 3) SM leaving. (It also didn't help that they sent Neil into this horrible alcoholic/living on the streets story -- but that brought VR and CK to the canvass.)

Dru is more than just a woman, she's a black woman which created a whole 'nother problem. Can you imagine her returning in January and by December only appearing in 30-40 episodes? I don't think I could handle that, but it's what would happen. She would get a "big" two week entrance story then appear once or twice a week and like Nina, her life would be centered around Lily. I just see total disaster when I think of Dru's return.

Even though I would love to see Dru back in the form of VR but I won't be watching because of my dislike for CKLily. I tried them the first time around & didn't like the mother & daughter chemistry. & when CK came back when VR was still there I stop watching. But I'm just one out of many so I don't know how VR return would take.

2nd I won't trust these hacks with Dru. They can't write for the black characters they have now. I just can't picture what they would write for somebody like Dru.

As great as she is, Dru is better off not being apart of this shiteous version of Y&R going on right now.

I'd hate for her to have a poorly planned return storyline and then be victimized months later.

So many of us would rather discuss how bad Y&R is and the troubles with the show than the actual episodes themselves - that says a lot. Y&R isn't working as a show, and its writing team is to blame. Nothing is ever going to change unless these writers are replaced, and that may never happen. We might as well accept that Y&R won't be getting any better anytime soon.

    • I found it to be a rather odd way to deal with a character departing for parts unknown.

Luckily, EJ and Johnny, and pretty much every other character saved today’s episode.  I didn’t expect Javi to be the one to save Sarah though, and I don’t mind it at all, because if it means that Javi is finally going to get his own identity/character, away from his douchy bf, I’m all for it. Javi’s scenes would’ve been a lot better had it not been for him. EJ and Johnny were the best part of today. Their conversation hit a lot of important beats and I’m so looking forward to seeing them play out. And now that EJ knows that Johnny is going to work for Xander, that opens up another dynamic to their storyline and to the Kiriakis family storylines as well. Tying them all together could be really good. There are so many story possibilities that can come out of this. And I thought Carson Boatman did a pretty good job again too.  I also liked that Johnny was there to comfort Chanel after everything that happened with Sarah. They’re so good together. But I do have mixed feelings about Chanel possibly forgiving Johnny so quickly. Hopefully, the question that she asked him at the end of today leads to more conflict for the two of them.  And yeah, still no changes in Alex’s character lol
    • Awesome, thanks so much for taking the time to grab this episode. I had a quick review of your rip because I was curious why it was 700MB and 30 minutes. The first 10 minutes of the episode is 3169 (opening credits at 5 minutes and again at 15 minutes). I thought we had the full HD version of ep.3170 on the YouTube channel, but it appears they added the wrong episode but labelled it 3170.
    • I guess, according to Mike Manning in the Michael Fairman chat, he was almost Derek

    • Well, since I'm still up unexpected past my growing-into-it bedtime. lol.   I finally got to rewatch Monday's. I even rewatched Friday's to take it all in. Now that we got the reveal and hit the climax of the SilkPress Sheila storyline, now we get to watch the aftermath and/or turns that come with its climax. So far, so good. Friday left us with three cliffhangers. And what I found surprising was how I felt about them over a rewatch.    I know some of you all felt a way about the dialogue during Kat vs Eva. I remember liking it more the first time around and it was nice for them to have these scenes to establish more of a frenemy vibe for them going forward. That still held up. But I found myself agreeing with you all about that dialogue. lol. Still, it was nice to have both of their POVs.   Second up was Silk Press Sheila vs the Duprees. And I was happy to get a brief spat with Dani in there. But the rest standouts for me was Anita and Martin. Haters can hate and given the tail end of the episode, I will agree to a fault, but Brandon has impressed and he was on fire on Monday and had great subtle work on Friday. And that subtle work made it all the better. Like I believe I said when I was watching...BC has a much better grip on his character and seems to be realizing what his tics are so has started to be able to know when to turn it up and when to dial it down. And for the most part (emphasis on most), he got that. Meanwhile, TT was giving fierceness, and I was here for every minute of it. Her reading SilkPress. Her being quip about it. Her 'BE STILL.' Ooooo she had a chokehold on me as Anita gave what I was expecting her to SilkPress. WORTH THE WAIT. I also loved Vernon's CHOOSE SILENCE. I wonder though if SilkPress will figure out Martin's condition from her observing Anita and Vernon with him.   And speaking of worth it...Oooo YES Nicole vs Ted was worth totally worth it. Oooooo I knew DD would nail it, and it was all so well done. The fight between the part of Nicole who is a therapist vs Nicole as a woman who wants to express how she feels. And being so angry. And how there would be moments when it would shoot out of her. And how she would restrain herself. But how she felt she should not be restrain. Just the levels of processing and layers. And DD played it all so well. I do wish Maurice gave just a little bit more, but overall, I thought he did a good job even if it was just Ted coming across as a deadbeat and not at all redeemable. And Kat being there for her mother was so beautiful.   Minority, but I love the montage though yes, it did run a little long. Given how the Duprees like to bond (and also as I mentioned from my own very recent family experiences), it did not seem out of place to me.     That said...let's see how the aftermath worked in today's episode. Overall. Cuz RC can be hit or miss.
    • I wonder whose brilliant (

) idea it was to do an almost complete rip-off of the "who killed Tom King"-storyline. That's some quality style writing right there.....
