RIGHT. I remember Lenz was getting a lot of acclaim in the soap mags for her part in the clone story and someone from the show was quoted as saying they were looking for a way to bring her back into the show.

Well, heck. It would have been nice if they had finally confirmed Roxy was no longer in the asylum, regardless of whether they brought in their kid as a new character.

I remember all the praise Lenz got, but for some reason I thought Budig had wanted to leave as well, as her contract was up.

Wasn't there some claim they briefly considered bringing Roxy back in this period?

@alwaysAMC  if he wasn't standing next to Scarlett, would anyone compare him to Rhett or Clark Gable? Or would be be some generic "dressed as a southern guy" dude?  lol..

Meanwhile, can anyone tell/remind me who Ross was supposed to be? I don't really think Blake's costume really screams "Jean Harlow" either, btw.

I remember the raves in the magazines. If that's the case, it's almost too bad they didn't bring her on as Stacey Chamberlain. Although she aced the role of Michelle. It's too bad all of her time is stuck in Santos hell.

LOL, I'll side with you on this only because those characters are a little before my time. I honestly wouldn't have clocked Scarlett or Rhett/Clark had someone not told me. Vanessa does look great though in that scene! :)

I couldn't figure Ross out either, as he just looks like a well-dressed man. Here is a snippet in case someone can figure it out:

*sigh*  the younger generation, to not know Clark Gable pains me.

Anyway, Ross does look handsome in a tux. I'd guess they're supposed to be Harlow/Beery from Dinner at Eight.

Whenever they put Maeve in a longer wig, it reminds me of early '80's Vanessa.

Susan Seyforth-Hayes auditioned for the re-cast part of Alexandra, losing out to Marh Dusay

While I don't think SSH would have been right for the role of Alexandra, I was disappointed in Marj Dusay's performance.

It seems more like happenstance than some truly bringing a specific minor character. They needed some kind of justification for Kyle's belief he was HB's son, and it just happened that they'd given HB some ex-madam as a talk-to character when he was introduced. I'd still like to know if it was a story Long retooled when Robert Newman decided to leave. It makes a lot more sense for Josh to be the product of an affair, given the friction in HB and Josh's relationship at the time.

I agree it was probably just happenstance, but if TPTB had cared about the integrity of the show itself, they would have put in the work necessary to weave important, missing characters back into the fabric of Springfield.

It might've been interesting to bring back Barbara Berjer, and hook HB and Barbara up. Barb wouldn't have put up with Reva's nonsense, and HB/Barb couldn't have been worse than HB/Alex.

Kyle's mother could've simply been some old affair of HB's, and dead.

Hahaha I feel you. I feel that way about so many things when I have discussions with 20-somethings in my office building. It pains me. They don't even know these classic soap operas we discuss daily - never heard of them!

Thankfully I at least know the name and face of Clark Gable, and the names of some of his movies, but I'd never think of him today if someone tried to dress as him at a party until someone told me.

Last week, we had to explain All in the Family to a girl in my office. *ouch*

They did bring back Barbara Berger for a while, and had her interact with her family a bit, but the show did very little with her and then just let her fade into oblivion again. Adam Thorpe returned for Blake's wedding, but mysteriously vanished halfway through the day, and his disappearance was never mentioned or explained. Something must have happened backstage, but it was a clumsy mess.

I feel like they brought her back just long enough to establish/re-establish who the character was for viewers so that afterwards anytime Ross and Blake or Holly and Fletcher were busy doing things on screen they could have a throw away line of dialogue explaining that she was looking after the twins or Meg off screen.

I know people apparently loved Mary Stuart as Meta, but I wish they'd brought Barbara back when Holly returned in '89. It would've naturally filled that gap they tried filling with Sarah and Lainie Bauer.

No, I'm sure Adam's return was just a clumsy attempt at doing a vet return. Why bother inserting him in a second day's worth of scenes when they'd have to pay him? Just need him to walk Blake down the aisle. RME.

I'm surprised they brought back Barbara at all, to be honest, although I'm still glad they did. I suppose this must be down to Michael Laibson, as he had produced AW in the late '80s and had worked with Barbara Berjer. Berjer fit in well in her few appearances. Rauch likely never wanted to go near another older woman (it must have mainly been down to P&G respect for Mary Stuart that she stayed a part of GL even while sick with cancer), but her not being ther when Ken returned and when Holly went crazy was just wrong.

Very possible. In any case, it was pointless all the way around.

To me, Sarah was abrasive and irritating, and Lainie was a retcon (i.e. fake) Bauer whose existence did not fit in with the show's canon.  At least Barbara was a character with family ties and a long history in Springfield.

His bizarre  return was fumbled and unnecessary if that's all they were going to do with him. TGL made so many mistakes back then, What a mess.
