Or who had been lovers, which was mostly (usually) accurate.

Haha yes, that too!  Which was especially helpful for GL because everyone seems to have hooked up/been engaged to or married on this show :P  When I first started watching GL, I was amazed at how many women on the show Alan-Michael had been with.

They had broached the subject of marital rape with John/Kim around 1976. That was how Andy was conceived, but I'm not sure how much they really discussed it as rape.

I don't think Andy was conceived by the rape.  I believe sometime after that, Kim was ready to leave John, but she had an accident that led to amnesia.  John took advantage of the situation to repair their relationship, and that was when Andy was conceived

I can imagine! Part of it's because some of them are on canvas for so long. Ross cuts a wide swath in spite of only being married twice. LOL.

And it was odd that they chose to name Hunt Block's character Ben, when Ben Reade was such a recent character.

It happens to all of us. 😮

Thank you for saying so. Although I do think you're right. But, wasn't Ben Reade a legacy character? It seems to me he had prior claim!!

I would've seen Ben Reade as a legacy character. I'm not sure when Block started, was Ben Reade even off the canvas? Fletch is on until '98 when Maureen Reardon is born, because he takes off after Holly donates a kidney to her (?).

No, it was a guy named Brad, who I think was married to her sister Annie? And after all that drama, when Brad and Dee had a chance to be together, it was a total bust and they broke up almost immediately. Not the Dobsons' best work.

I'm pretty sure Ian had already died when Dee married John.

The lack of care when it came to naming characters on GL has always been a pet peeve of mine. That was definitely a big one. A while ago we were making fun of all the young girls the same age with names that start with "M."

Someone mentioned earlier Claire's brother. When Michelle was born, they were going to name her Samantha after Claire's brother Sam. Claire changed her mind and put "Bertha Bauer Ramsey" on the birth certificate. Then Fletcher started calling her B. B. (or Bibi, or Bebe, don't ask me). Then suddenly Claire was telling everyone to call the baby Michelle.

CLEARLY, someone remembered at the last minute that Justin and Jackie's daughter was named Samantha, and that it would be awkward if they brought her into the story later (as they did eventually). Then someone thought it would be a good idea to have a tribute to Bert/Charita. Then they realized "Bert" or even "B.B." were not names for a modern soap character, so they quickly slapped Michelle on her. (I guess as a tribute to her Uncle Mike?)

Then there were multiple Williams, Billys, Bills, Wills . . .

Somebody really needed to gift the show a baby name book.

GL was very tuned in to honoring family by naming children after them. It does drive me a little batty at times too. It even ticks me off that it's Jenna who gets to name a child after Henry, not Vanessa. (Although I'm certainly not advocating anyone be named Henrietta...lol)

I think Ben had went away to boarding school in 1996.

I think I may have found something showing why Michael didn't like the press.  Looks to be from the 70s, but I can't tell what publication it's from and date.

It's a link to an image on Pinterest. Can anyone tell when/where this is from? It says Guiding Light's Michael Zaslow:  Is He Just A Falling Star?

There are a lot of cool pictures of Michael and co-stars on that site.

This one is so cute with Roger and Christina

Pin on guiding light

I saw a great pic of Michael and Bev too.

Is this OG Alan with Hope and Baby Alan Michael?  Too cute

That is Rona Barrett's Daytimers, which would mean 1977 is the start date. It's a quality magazine but those headlines and some of the tone of the gossip inside were very bitchy, I guess as she assumed (maybe rightfully) that's what sold.

Thanks for the link! I had fun looking around at other images and article clippings from GL back in the day!

Didn't someone say they wanted to see a picture of Jordan Clarke when he was playing Tim Ryan on GL? We'll, here's a picture of him with Lenore Kasdorf (Rita) and Janet Grey (Eve):

Cool find!  How did you find where it came from?  Now to try and find that article!

AI says Michael was in July 1980 Daytimers Magazine, but I don't know how accurate that is.  The 'Falling' part may be about his fall off the cliff! LOL

@DeeVee That would be me!  Thanks for the find!

While watching 1989, I noticed that Rusty did sign language to a deaf girl while looking for Marah. I saw that Rusty returned in 1998.  I don't know for how long though.  Why didn't they pair him up with Abby?

That date could make sense.

Daytimers is the only soap magazine I know of which used the style in the photo. Not just the typeface but that specific type of inflammatory headline. One I remember was about an actress whose character had been beaten by a man, and it was something along the lines of, "Can ____ take a beating?"

Thanks for sharing these old articles.

The best plot for Rusty would have been one where he comes out of the closet and everyone kicks themselves for not realizing he was gay with those tight Levis and no undies all those years in Tulsa.  Now that would have been a great plot for the Shaynes.

LOL Too funny.  Seems Rusty's big run was in the late 80s and then he would just show up for funerals or family things and leave ever since. I don't even think that storyline would keep him around.

I was looking up about the 1970s and I didn't know the Spaulding family weren't even created until 1977!  So Roger Thorpe was around since 1971 and the show in the 1998 acted like his character wasn't a vital part of the show!  I read that his romance with Holly was hugely popular (remember that he started in 1971).  However, Michael Zaslow would request to leave every now and again.

I wish I could find at least articles with summaries of the storyline in 1971.
