February 1-5th, 1999:

The character of Vanessa did not stand out to me much at all during the beginning of 1999, probably because she wasn’t on much. The scenes that aired during this week was heart breaking though & to see her character feeling torn between Matt and Dinah was so real and heart wrenching. I saw comments saying “this made me hate Vanessa” but for me it was the opposite. The characters motivation to protect her daughter at all costs makes me find her character very likeable. I don’t know the backstory between Matt and Dinah but he clearly cannot stand her, he used some pretty harsh words against her which made me kind of side eye him. Yeah Dinah is crazy but even crazy people deserve their mother’s love.

I always side-eyed Matt for passing the baton to Vanessa to turn Dinah in. If he was so hell-bent on doing what was right, then he should've manned up and done it himself. And since he later asked Beth to change her story, truth wasn't all that important to him.

Yes, Dinah was a manipulator, and Vanessa made plenty of excuses for her, but Matt was delusional if he expected Vanessa to turn her own child in.

Thank God for Billy.

Glad you're still enjoying!  I wish I could catch up to you so we can compare notes. One day I'll get there!  I'm just about to get to Jan 1997.

When Dinah came back to town as an adult in February 1995, she was a grifter and planned to get money out of both Vanessa and Ross to keep up her lifestyle she had in Paris. Matt, not knowing who Dinah was, overhead her talk about this at the diner. When he later met Dinah and realized it was Vanessa's daughter, he instantly disliked her/didn't trust her and tried to tell Vanessa about Dinah's plans. He wanted to protect Vanessa. Dinah then tried to seduce Matt to break up Vanessa/Matt, amongst other terrible things she did to Matt, but Matt held strong and didn't let Dinah win. Since then, for most of 1996, they don't interact nearly as much and I think they just tolerated each other.

I love that the show still plays on that history even a few years later and plays a big part in Matt and Vanessa’s relationship. Their relationship seems to be on the rocks right now in 1999 so I’m excited to see what comes next with them.

I’m sure you’ll be caught up to me soon. I watch when I can but don’t always get a chance if I’m working and stuff. It’s still very much holding my interest so I am going to keep coming back to it I’m sure even if I don’t watch for a couple days.

I also should add, the actress who plays Vanessa does emotional scenes very well. Any actress that can sell an emotional/crying scene and make it believable usually ends up being a favourite of mine. Not all actors can do those type of scenes well but she’s amazing at it.

Pray tell, who might be some others who to you can, would they be?

You're not asking me, but I'll tell you, anyway. Judith Light. She was amazing at these kinds of scenes.

At the opposite end, Sara Felder on Ryan's Hope. Even though I liked her as Siobhan, every time she started to cry, I would be like, "Oh, God, lower the volume." 😁

Sharon Case is my all time favourite actress who plays Sharon on Y&R. I also love Arianne Zucker (Nicole on Days). Those are two examples of female actresses who can break down on screen and make their emotions totally believable to the point I forget they’re even acting.

I should also add Eileen Davidson onto that as well. I just love an actress that can give a solid & believable emotional scene without chewing the scenery and acting a fool in order to make it believable. This actress who plays Vanessa showcased that well for me I think!

I missed this so wanted to say thanks for summarizing the chapter. Kim was smart to not go for the obvious with her first Emmy reel.

I wonder who was the favorite for 1985 Lead Actress.

Does anyone know what episodes Kim Zimmer submitted for 1986 when she lost to Erika Slezak? The 1986 Daytime Emmy broadcast showed no clips for Lead Actress.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I also love Ari & ED!!! Just not a Y&R fan so I honestly know little about Sharon Case's work. And, of course I love Maeve.

But, my all-time favorite actresses are: Connie Ford, Anne Heche, Susan Seaforth-Hayes, Laura Wright, Tamara Tunie, Karla Mosley, Tamara Braun, Sarah Joy Brown &  Sarah Lancashire. Besides all being great at their crafts, I doubt we could find any other common element, LOL!

I just got through doing an edit  DAYS 7-29-24 Eric & Nicole A Love Story

Included are about a dozen flashbacks one immediately after the other for a little over 2 minutes. Salem, the Brady Pub, going away party, headed to Paris, waited so long & been through so much before they could finally be together with their infant son

I stopped watching Days quite awhile ago and now that Nicole is gone I really don’t know if I’ll ever go back to it. I love a lot of the Days cast don’t get me wrong but Nicole was really what kept me wanting to keep watching consistently.

Nancy Curlee and Stephen Demorest quit unexpectedly in 1994 from network and/or Phelps interference not because Nancy was pregnant. Stephen came back four weeks later and stayed until his contract was up in Dec 1994.

Nancy has two bio girls (Claire and Julia born in 1992 and 1997, respectively). I believe Stephen has an older daughter who's 43, Kat.

Nancy gave birth to Claire in March 1992 which is why she took a sabbatical and recommended Broderick as her replacement. She came back after 1 year and they worked with Broderick as Reilly had departed after his two year contract ended to take over days for the first time.

When GL was cancelled I corresponded with Nancy Curlee and she wrote back and had fond words for GL. In response to my query about why she never joined another writing team, she confirmed that she consulted for ABC daytime in 95-96 and was slated to take over GH as head writer from Guza (who was at GH after Labine for a few months but had to leave for Sunset Beach) or Labine (she didn't specify) in 1996, but she found out she was pregnant with Julia in 1996 and Riche had to go with Iacubuzio/Whitesell (disaster) then Culliton (disaster) before Guza returned.

Curlee was diplomatic about Phelps in her interview with Locher a while back, but she never worked for Jill or any producer on soaps again; Demorest worked in soaps for years after GL and was never hired by Phelps either.  I don't have evidence or facts but I believe they wouldn't have worked for Phelps again, given how she handled head writers in subsequent years.

I've taken breaks from DAYS before but the first shows I watched beginning in 1966 were AW, DAYS & ATWT. DAYS is my only original still on the air. I stuck it out the last several years of RonC's HW tenure even though I hated his writing of the show so now I am actually HAPPY to be a daily watcher, so far, with the new writers but I do miss Nicole & I am flabbergasted that Corday did not make a $$ settlement with her. I read her case's brief, yes, even that long, and I did not see even one thing in it that wasn't proven to be so during the investigation of Alarr, so I cannot imagine there being value in going in front of a judge or jury!!!

Yes, I knew that she was slated for GH when the second pregnancy derailed her. About it & the other just going by what I thought she said.

Judith Light, to me, basically walks on water. One of my favorite pictures of her is actually of her & Doug Watson holding their Emmy statues. They both won the same year.

Since Strasser was nom'd and Slezak wasn't, I would imagine Strasser was.

OMG...Brian Bloom beat MEK, Jack Wagner and Michael O'Leary.

1985, Lead actress, no clips either. Not Lucci, surely not Gillian Spencer, Strasser? Not Dee Hall. Gonna go with Robin Strasser. Kim mentioned so many from the mic, Slezak, Larry Gates, etc.

I’m watching more episodes tonight and there’s a scene with Harley/Susan and Reva/Cassie at the hospital and Harley is introducing Susan to her grandmother Reva. I’m sitting there wracking my brain trying to figure out how the heck Reva has any relation to Susan at all.. then I started doing some digging and realized OHH.. so Susan’s biological father is Reva’s son! lol.. that would have confused to absolute [!@#$%^&*] out of me if I was a new viewer in 1999.

Google has really been my friend since starting this show lol

I don't understand. If you'd been watching in real time, you'd have known who Harley got with child, with, if you see what I mean.  The only not-knowers who the baby daddy is, would literally be people who tuned in after the boink but before ... I don't know when.

BTW, you can fool the censors with a symbol thrown in or other things I'm sure you could imagine. Like $hit, or phuque etc.

And, also Google can be wrong. So can IMDb & also wiki-whatever.

Well Dylan isn’t on the show right now where I’m watching. The only parents I’ve seen of Susan’s is Jim and Harley. I knew Susan was put up for adoption as a baby and adopted by Jim and Connie but I didn’t know who the bio father was. The bio father has not yet been addressed until this particular episode and Reva explains to Susan that Dylan is her son.

Who knows maybe it was addressed in earlier episodes I watched but it just went over my head at the time.

The confusing thing about googling the family ties in soap operas tends to be when a characters true mother/father is changed at a later time so if I’m watching earlier episodes it may not make sense but I find it tends to be pretty accurate.
