Re: Bill Bauer---are we sure Ed Bryce would've been open to coming back full time at any point after they killed Bill off circa 1970? I've always meant to ask, as I've never seen any interview of his. He obviously came back to usher Hilary in, and he did the brief stint in 1983, but I don't really know what he did otherwise.

He played Patrick Donovan on Loving a few times around 90-91. The only other thing I remember is an SPW article from the mid '90s where he talked about using videos of some of his work in churches or something along those lines, to help with public speaking.

This is something I've thought for a long while. Of course, it's not fair. We know what kind of magic Douglas Marland did during his second tenure so it gives us "insider trading" level info as armchair quarterbacks. And, the Dobsons at GL, well, the drama was just elevated.

R: Bill Bauer. it's funny but Bert seemed to work better as a widow/single mother fretting over her family.

After Bert passed I wish the show had introduced Bert's sister or maybe a cousin to pick up the Bauer matriarch role. I would have loved to have seen Sada Thompson cast in the part.

I have not seen much of Marland's work, but I've always heard he's such a fantastic writer. However when I do see some of his shows or scenes, I'm always so bored. Am I missing something? I find him incredibly overrated but I'm willing to accept I might not be old enough to have seen his best material.

One of my favorite ATWT standalone scenes is Marland with Iva running into the barn, screaming, carrying a pitchfork, "Don't! Stop! She's your child!" Then, knowing that Betty Rea hired Lisa Brown with no job for her, Marland declaring her his muse & creating Iva for her on ATWT & Nola for her on GL, then, I'm on board with him & prepared to see what else comes of him. Unfortunately, I've not seen nearly as much as I'd like to.

What era of what show are we talking about? Or just in general for both?

As much as I love ATWT, I think his best moment was when Kelly nailed Nola on GL. I swear that scene went on for 10 minutes uninterrrupted, with Kelly just dragging her for filth. It was really the first time I "got" it.

Ed also returned as Bill in 1980 for Hope's wedding.

I don't think there was much interest in him coming back, after the poor reception to the Dobson's BFTD story in 77.

GL was more interested in dumping established vets than bringing one back.

Bill  could have been used in family scenes and business stories and his stepson Paul could have come on also.

    • I stopped watching Another World in 1990. Simply, lost interest in the show.  I had watched the show from 1973 to 1990. The 90 minute show started the decline of AW.  NBC panicked with expanding AW due to the GH hoopla. As mentioned above, 1982 was a trainwreck for AW.  The introduction of the Shea family, the movie storyline involving Jamie, and Steve Frame favoring Rachel over Alice. The writers went into that direction due to the forgettable performance of Linda Borgeson.

    • Ive seen that theory thrown out but the one thing against it is that Leslie and her family lived in Chicago. She only came back to DC last year after her husband died. Unless they say Alan made a trip to DC and died while away, she wouldnt know about that. However I do think the angle of her finding out that Martin was involved could work as that gives her leverage against Bill too for covering it up. She'd want to get revenge on him by threatening to have him disbarred
    • What a good write-up @Errol! Nice seeing the nod to Duplaix's lead.
    • The Egypt location shoot was cancelled because of the Achille Lauro cruise ship hijacking

    • And, to me it is a little bit hilarious that AW fans all over continue to refer to it as Egyptian Dust Recently elsewhere I've been running polls. When did you stop watching AW or What storyline caused you to stop watching AW. You may be interested to know that sticking it out till the bitter end is winning by a landslide. Next highest vote getter is - no surprise - Frankie's murder. So that covers like 60% & next 20%. Then the votes drop way down to 10% and well below but a wide array of reasons are given, including but not limited to  Justine Lumina Rachel having twins at her age, how ridiculous Mac's death the 90 minute show firing JC, George R & Dwyer Hmm, I know there are a few more, in the 1%-3% range but I cannot think of what they are. Sorry, my bad. Should have made notes but I didn't know I would be posting about it. LOL!!
    • A kind angel has added both episodes to the vault (UK Diva TV broadcast version).
    • Yes, I think that is the most likely situation.  TPTB were unhappy with the offer(s) they got from the tourism board in Finland, and decided the trip was going to be too expensive for P&G/NBC to finance alone.   I would also speculate a similar situation likely occurred a few years later with the planned location shoot in Egypt, which was also cancelled after the storyline had already started, and changed to Arizona.
