Y&R Episode Discussion for the week of July 20

Well, I'm on record as enjoying Deacon. And I didn't find his scenes with Amber as anything but playful....so far.

But what I was feeling was "poor BDW/SWs". Because all the backstory happened on another show. "April", "Little D", "Jackie and her boy toy"...all of that referenced another show. For a guy like me, who watches both and LOVES cross-overs, it was good. But for the average Y&R viewer??? That's a lot of baggage for the writers to carry.

I'm not understanding why Amber can't tell Daniel about Deacon? They didn't do anything too horrible together, that I recall.

ETA: I don't think Mac would encourage a deception (Cane stays hidden in the hideaway). She's all about forthright honesty. So, this stuff with Cane rings false to me.

I did like how JT seemed to be protecting Colleen.

April was the singer, wasn't she?

But what was Jackie and her boy toy? Jackie, Nick's mom, wasn't on the show back then, was she? When I see her now and think of her back then, she's like a completely different character.

If Amber were 19 and still trying to discover herself, or if she was really feeling unhappy with Daniel for months- trying to express her true self this whole time and he was holding her back, maybe Deacon prying into her life by blackmailing her for sex would work to a certain extent...

Then again, it just wouldn't.

So I think Deacon must be lying to her. He must've seen how her designs have made her buckloads of cash and wants in on it, so he's lying to her, right? Right?

I mean, who wants to have cheap sex with woman you haven't seen in years?

Oh right, Billy.

Yes, April was Amber's dark haired hitherto-unknown twin, the singer.

Jackie--Nick's mom--was Deacon's last lover before he left the show. During this time, Massimo had a paralyzing stroke, and Deacon taunted Mass about how he was gonna f*ck Jackie and Mass couldn't stop it.

Deacon and Amber were nice, but nothing in their backstory explains his driving lust for her now, or why she is hiding her past. Either something happened between them after they both left B&B or something... That said, since Amber and Deacon "share" a son, there is emotionally interesting territory to mine if they want.

I can't believe that was the same character. She's a completely different person now, like Taylor. Only traces are left of them.

I think the tawdry element of Deacon and Amber's past was the fact that the baby was supposed to be Rick's and it was actually her cousin, Becky's and Deacon's right? Didn't Amber's baby with Usher die and she switched them? Something to that effect?

Amber f*cked both Usher and Rick in the same time frame. She was passing her baby off as Rick's, but was desperately afraid a brown baby would come out and give her away. She needed a white baby to trap those Forrester millions.

So she high-tailed it to mama's, to give birth in her Furnace Creek trailer. Sadly the (white) baby was stillborn. Fortunately, Amber's cousin Becky was nine months pregnant, and she didn't want to keep her baby. So Amber and Tawny took care of that, and passed "little Eric" off as Rick's.

As you know, later Becky wanted the baby back, but when she died tragically of cancer, she gave the child back to cuz Amber. Deacon eventually got the kid, although I don't remember how/why. Last we heard, the child was being raised by Becky's parents. I wonder what is happening now.

I'm pretty sure Deacon knows that backstory. That would frighten Amber into submission, I think. Baby switching is actually pretty wretched in the real world. Not as heinous as burning a fetus, obviously, but unethical nonetheless. ;) I'm sure she doesn't want Daniel to know about that time of her reckless life.

Once Amber came to Genoa City, we had to know that B&B would continue to affect Y&R somehow. If it's Deacon, I'll take it for now. He's hilarious.

Daniel's mother is Phyllis, for goodness sake. Also, Daniel is no saint himself. Deacon should have very little power over Amber. Then again, that would require character-driven and not plot-driven writing.

Amber's babyswitch is small potatoes next to the crimes and felonies committed daily by the GC denizens. How creepy is Victor trying to crush Colleen? Ewww...

Cane "thought" of everything with the lies to marry Lily, the way Johnny thought of everything to get Gilda to marry him.

Johnny's a con man, lied to get Gilda to marry him, even though they were in love.

Gilda thinks they're in love - finds out Johnny's lying to him.

Johnny narrates the movie, so this wasn't his dialogue to her. This is narration. Gilda couldn't stand knowing why he had lied to her. So she sought him out. (See Lane spoilers/promo.)

Cue forshadowing.

Gilda (Lily) feels like she's been living in a vacuum since her husband abandoned her. Cane thinks he's giving her peace and quiet by not going to the hospital.

Gilda wants Johnny to disappear from her life again, to let her go. But in the movie, she falls apart on him, realizes she'll never be over him. And she can never let him go.

I love how you answered before I did.

I'm not even describing Amber's decisions as if I sympathize with them. I understand them as elements to move the plot along, nothing further. I just think this is what's driving her to prevent this information from Daniel because I'm giving TPTB the benefit of the doubt that they actually have some sort of dirt on Amber and her past as a pseudo-mother isn't really what she'd keep from Daniel.

Although, again, in real life, if you keep something like a child's existence from your lover, it's pretty unbelievable. Daniel doesn't even know about Little Eric, right? It would be detrimental to their relationship, that she never told Daniel about him. He would feel betrayed and disrespected, which is much worse than her telling him she had some sort of sordid past with Deacon.

So keeping Deacon's connection away from Daniel makes absolute sense to me, if this is what TPTB are working on. It's really the only thing that is solid... in my head LOL.

Otherwise, as it was since the beginning, this s/l sucks monkeyballs LOL.

    • Agreed. The Emmys next year are gonna be a pretty tough competition and I hope we get a Days sweep lol  Not only does Deidre deserve a nomination for these last few weeks, but I also think Paul Telfer, Raven Bowens, Carson Boatman, Dan Feuerriegel and Alison Sweeney have good chances as well.
    • It’s not about a lack of faith and trust in MVJ, it’s about a a lack of faith and trust in Ron Carlivati, who I think can be very sneaky and manipulative when he wants to be.  And, all that “He’s just a breakdown writer” talk never changed my mind about anything, because at Days, it was “just a breakdown writer” that gave us some of the worst episodes I’ve ever seen.

    • I think they’re desperately trying to cover his awful tattoos. But anyway them being unable to style short kings properly has been a major pet peeve of mine for a while now.  I honestly don’t understand what some people expect from actors to even begin considering them for recognition. Let’s be real—awards mostly mean that an actor is respected by their peers and has some level of cultural relevance. Actual judgment on the acting itself? That’s often secondary—highly subjective and shaped by the times. I completely agree on both points. If you’re an actor or a dancer you shouldn’t get any tattoos (sorry not sorry). Tomas’ tattoos are ugly too. And regarding the couples- you’re completely right. These writers are unable to write romance.   Further comments: - Kat cannot be this dumb to keep tampering with evidence over and over again. And I’m officially not a fan of the actress—every time she’s in a scene with Leslie, she doesn’t seem intimidated at all. She plays it like comic relief, which is just too much, especially when paired with Leslie’s histrionics and over-the-top antics. Leslie is older, dangerous, and has literally been portrayed as homicidal—Kat should be at least a little scared. • I also didn’t like Kat playing damsel in distress with the hotel manager. It gave off the same weird energy as Dani with the cop. I would’ve much preferred the version Paul Raven suggested, with her sneaking in through housekeeping. • And yes, Dani again accused Hayley of faking the pregnancy—this time even specifying she might be using a pillow under her shirt. (No fake miscarriage being mentioned) I stand by my take: this is ridiculous writing. No one in the real world—except us, the chronically online soap watchers—would even think of such a conspiracy theory. Haley is no Beyoncé. • What in the world was Chelsea wearing in her hair the other day? And this whole thing with Madison is beyond cringe. Chelsea’s coming off as needy and toxic—basically like every other Dupree. • I’m glad the casino storyline is moving forward, but it’s still boring as hell. Honestly, I’d be so here for a plot twist where Vanessa and Doug take Joey out. • The direction and editing lately have been rough. Abrupt cuts, weird pacing… something just feels off overall. There’s a strange uneasiness to how it’s all coming together. • And finally: Tomas is too much of a saint. Where are the messy sluts when you need them? (Vanessa doesn’t count.)
    • I was watching some August 1987 episodes and they brought back so many memories. I had some thoughts: Lisa and Jamie were so dull. Lisa was such a nothing character. It boggles my mind that so much story was centered around her in such a short amount of time. Joanna Going is a talented actress, but the material was just not there.  It was so good to see Wallingford and Mitch again. I know there was talk about Felicia a while back, but these episodes reminded me how integral Felicia was for the show.  Sally Spencer was done so dirty. She is turning in superb performances in an icky storyline. I wish she had stuck around longer. She has chemistry with everyone. The McKinnons should have lasted longer. Spencer had some strong stuff with Stephen Schnetzer and Mary Alexander. AW waster such a talented actress by getting rid of her. Justice for Cheryl too. I also missed Ed Fry when he left. Sandra Ferguson was a star from the moment she came on. She was charismatic and just popped. She had immediate chemistry with RKK and blended in well with Wyndham and Watson. I'd forgotten about the teenage Matthew.  I have no memory of Peggy Lazarus. She must not have lasted long. Was the original plan for John that he was going to turn out to be the twins' real father?
