Y&R: Potpourri Thread

Nominally I mainly lurk in most soap forums these days (I really haven't been a regular poster since the days of WOST) but within the last couple of weeks I'm frankly getting tired of Y&R. I still find it watchable and my curiosity will still draw me in, but it's nowhere near how great it was at the end of last year. I have some brief thoughts on each story.

Adam gaslighting Ashley: I hated9 the fact that Ashley turned out pregnant, this story could have happened without a pregnancy. As much fun it was to see Adam in Sabrina's dress, I hate how this story gets more sick with each day. The hysterical pregnancy is so unbelievable for Y&R. I would have thought that Victor would be much smarter than this. BTW I hate Victoria whining about Sabrina. I actually hate that this story is tied into Sabrina because that story was so awful.

Amber/Kevin/Daniel/Jana: The chipmunk story screwed over Kevin and Amber, and I could care less about Deacon coming to town. This is a non-story really, which a shame because I hate how the four are being wasted.

The Winters: I had hoped that the Karen/Neil/Tyra story played out differently than it did, with Tyra turning psycho or something. The less said about Devon, the better. Lily has cancer? BORING! Bring back Dru and have Gil Wallace pair up with Olivia.

Phillip III/Cane: God where do I begin? Completely unnecessary and I have to agree with others that this story is moving too fast. There are better stories to tell involving Katherine, Jill, and Nina.

Mary Jane: I absolutely love her, but sometimes her story feels rushed, and her teaming up with Adam is dumb.

Nick/Sharon/Jack/Phyllis: Not even going to touch this one with a forty foot pole. Who cares anymore, it's old and done now.

Thanks for contributing your thoughts, soapfan770, more proof that it's not always the same ten people posting in this thread.;)

I hope to see you sharing your throughs with us about the show more in the future, and I certainly agree with all of your points.

This show is turning many off and I've noticed an increasingly negative reaction towards the writing on this show over the past few months from fans, it's good to have a poster who hasn't posted much in a while contributing to this thread.

God, those Phillip IV meeting Phillip III scenes were terribly botched, rushed, and executed today. A perfect example of the horrible pacing, sloppy execution, and just hallow writing of this crappy writing regime.

They threw too much at us at once, as usual. Phillip IV's first day back should have been spent strictly getting reacquainted with Nina, Jill, and Katherine. He shouldn't have met the father who abandoned him and faked his death for 20 years THIS soon. The Friday cliffhanger should have been Phillip IV opening the front door to find Phillip III there or something. God, the rushing of beats on this show is terrible. As Carl said, it's so anti-soap.

But then again, this crappy writing regimes hates following up on cliffhangers from prior episodes.

The lack of any emotion -- joy, rage, preferably both...not to mention shock, surprise -- in this P3 story is just amazing.

I mean, Jeanne is trying...and Tricia Cast is great, although she seems quickly forgiving and tolerant, so she's not going to be te fire...but this is so emotionally dead. It's killing me.

It's really sad, they clearly didn't think this storyline though. Hell, they clearly aren't think so many things on this show through anymore.

This storyline has officially been botched and has officially become a train-wreck, IMO.

So many of the problems evident in this story are also evident in others. It's time this show shaped up or more experienced and competent writers and producers are hired.

I must say again, I love how objective and critical you've become lately, Mark.

"Fanboi" no more. :)

Nina should have had a day or two to be angry, I would think. Again, my feelings on this are tempered by the fact that Nina tricked Philip into getting her pregnant. To some extent I feel like she made her own bed when it comes to marrying someone that is gay by her relentless pursuit of him. Still he chose to marry her so a day or two of rage at the situation seems called for.

I think TPTB didn't want Nina painted as a gay hater. They really underestimate their audience (or at least a good chunk of it, I think). I'm pretty sure we can distinguish Nina being pissed at Phillip for causing her to grieve and for marrying her vs. being pissed at him for being gay.

Well, nobody is a gay hater, apparently. Which is a nice lesson in tolerance, but this story is so bereft of emotion. Honestly, today, I sat with my mouth agape. This is not how any of these characters would react. I alternated between incredulity and wish the snarky, unsmiling P3 dead again.

Thom Bierdz did say none of the characters would have any problems with him being gay, or something to that effect. Then what was the point of brining him back from the dead and just making him gay? Where is the drama? Everything is so hallow and anything interesting has been rushed or completely ignored.

They should all be extremely pissed that he made them grieve. P4 should be livid. LIVID. At least Kaye has been allowed to show a bit of anger even though people keep telling her she is wrong. Good grief! P3 let her thing she did the unspeakable to her daughter. It defies all sense. We are approaching GH levels of bad right now.

We are approaching GH levels of bad right now.

Y&R has become GH without the mob and the stellar scriptwriting team.

Everything is rushed, done for shock value, and ultimately makes little to no sense.

I haven't bothered to watch in a while. I have been unhappy with the show since the denouement of the Katherine storyline, but I've stuck with it. However, the Phillip reveal was SUCH a huge letdown for me, especially Jill's non-reaction to long-thought-to-be-dead son turning up alive. That should have been such a searing piece of drama, a career-defining moment for Jess Walton. For the show to continuously fumble such easy reveals gives me no confidence that they'll provide satisfying entertainment in the future. And the only character that I find engaging at all right now is Nikki, who feels like she's being Brooke Englished out of the show.

If Victoria Rowell ever comes back, I might considering tuning back in. Hey,

the prospect of Louise Sorel's return

makes me want to check out DAYS again for the first time in about 10 years.

DAYS is going to be the show to watch with those returns. Very juicy.

Unless they come back as callous and unemotional pods who blame everyone on the canvas for their troubles in life.

Yes, everyone in small town Wisconsin is enlightened and liberal while Cali-freaking-fornia shoots down gay marriage! Phillip's entire rationale for faking his death makes no sense if everyone is Miss Mary Sunshine when it comes to homosexuality. I HATE the message of this story. So, all the people who have been closeted had no reason to worry for their careers? All the people who have been gay bashed were remembering wrong? Give me a freaking break with this idiot storyline. If Phillip was desperate enough to fake his death, give him a real reason to feel that desperate.

These posts from the spoiler threads needs to be posted here, it's such a Potpourri moment.

If this is true, I think I might have to jump on Alvin's "MAB must go" bandwagon.

And if they're letting TS go, they might as well kill Colleen off. Without TS, I have no use for Colleen.

I'm there....

:o

I've never seen you this dissatisfied with this show since you've been posting here at SON, Mark, and I agree with you. This show isn't very good right now and it doesn't look like much will change.

When people who have stuck by this show through thick and thin are fed up, you KNOW something is very wrong with the current creative direction of this show.

All we can do is hope that the next writing regime does a better job with this show. :)

I'm tempted to bump that fire MAB thread that was started by DaytimeFan (I miss DF! :( ). I'll leave it for Alvin to do it. lol
