I think giving the Black characters these token social issues like adoption drama, illness, crack-addicted mothers, and absent parent comes off as deeply stereotypical to me. It seems like for years the Winter's family, in particular, has been used as the token social issue storyline family.

I think it's a tough balance. You become too politically correct and you lose potential for drama. You go too far the other direction and display stereotypes and you offend people. For example, look at the stories OLTL has written for the teens of late. Cole's drug addiction? You tell that story for an AA teen and people would accuse tptb of promoting stereotypes. Starr's pregnancy? Same thing. Of course, they'd have to have an AA teen on the show to write these stories for to begin with. But then there's Destiny, and I've seen posters complain that she's stereotypical even though she's being written as Matthew's hero, because of how she looks and talks. There's no reason "Becca" couldn't have been cast with an AA actress. It wouldn't have changed the story one iota.

this was a great read and spot on.

I ahte the shows always keep the AA characters in a bubble.

GH: Sonny, front burner. Dr. Lee, Nurse Epiphany, Robin's therapist; all recurring and seldom seen

Really? Cuz it feels like shes on the most after Sonny/Jason/Whores Who Love Them...

I'm not going to go into why they rehire CK so Lily can venture out & date how many white guys she wants & reassure people that she is part of a black family. By keeping saying that she just like her mother. When the viewers don't see it on the screen.

but she is like her mother- she's black!

Again, Nancy Curlee got it. Gilly, David, Kat, and Hamp were all rooted in black families and black culture and yet their stories affected everyone in town. I loved the antagonism and blackmail between Roger and Gilly at WSPR.

And, of course, their stories all went to hell after regimes changed at GL.

Curlee did get it, and surprisingly they were not written inside a bubble. Gilly/Alan-Michael/Roger, Hamp and Billy's friendship, David and Bridget's friendship, etc, etc.
