There is an overriding sense of satisfaction and victory on the Digital Spy forums at the moment. I've never had a great deal of time for that 'community/lynch mob' but since more or less the time it was announced Bryan Kirkwood would become the Executive Producer it has gotten worse, to the point the moderators had to ban users at regular intervals for out-of-line comments, ranging from linking his sexuality to his choice of stories and actors to his Scottish heritage. Bonkers.

However, I do think he was ultimately a bad fit for Eastenders. Having not gone back and read it, I think I commented on the 'Eastenders Machine' when he was appointed. Diederick Santer, Kate Harwood and going back, John Yorke all worked within a BBC machine prior to taking the reigns at Elstree.

Whilst in charge of Hollyoaks, I can only imagine the workings at Lime Pictures were less 'structured/restricted' and thus, Bryan Kirkwood had less people to appease and answer to. He also didn't have a massive fanbase and media to answer to. Certainly not on the scale he has had for the last 2 years.

Don't get me wrong, this isn't a 'defence' as such, because the quality has been very 'hit-and-miss'. I don't need to go over what has already been said because I agree largely with it. I don't think the show was ever as bad as stated. I like a long-running story and didn't mind the Masood/Yusuf story lasting 1 Year+. I mean, it gave us the magnetic Ace Bhatti for a sustained period of time.

Do I think he and Kath Beedles were asked to 'resign'? Probably, as suggested by the installation of an interim EP. Think the hasty exit of Paul Marquess from Hollyoaks and the temporary reign of Gareth Phillips. There is enough talent in the two of them that I don't think they will have problems finding new gigs.

Eastenders doesn't mark everybody's cards.

I mentioned the fanbase that needs to be appeased. I feel with this fanbase in particular that they know what they DON'T want but may not actually know what they DO want, and in that regard, they may not know what they have with any new permanent until it's 'too late'. Then it will all begin again.

On that note, I don't suppose it's too late to tempt Myar Craig-Brown back form ITV?

The character was a joke most of the time, but I think I'm actually going to miss Hev in some strange way...

    • That makes sense. Rauch did like to play games, as shown with some of the antics with the Labines. We should make some screencaps.  I can imagine her not being thrilled by much of anything in 1996.
    • I believe he also turned out to be Doug Cassen's son. I could be wrong about that. Yeah, he doesn't get talked about much in the history books.
    • Cady McClain said the same thing with her hairdos - she switched it up so much because she was either unhappy or bored.  Kim must have been unhappy in 1996 because she has so many different short styles, it's wild (haha).
    • She definitely was trying new things with her hair and makeup in the 1986 scenes I saw so it tracks. Rauch wouldn't have been there, but it just strikes me as a conversation Rauch would have had with her with when he was at GL. Rauch loved to badmouth JC. So she put it in the book as if she had been told at the time. It's like how she has Michelle Forbes on GL years before she actually arrives or Ellen Wheeler firing people who had been fired yrs. before by Rauch or Conboy.
    •   From what actors have said, Y&R has been very busy taping the upcoming storyline, and that was up to and including the week of Diamont's party, and after.
    • Well, a good number of sets were up when I was there, but there was a limited number of people around. Even Y&R seemed dead, but maybe everyone was out for lunch at the time? I remember driving from the parking lot and preparing to enter the roadway when I saw Michelle Stafford and Christian LeBlanc returning from what I think was their lunch break. Not sure where they went or were coming from.
    • A scene I cannot wait to see. Julie Harris as Liliemae is the gift that keeps on giving; she's not outright evil, but frustrating, and in her own way, still pretty lovable.
    • Kim used to say that you can tell when she was unhappy because she would try weird or new things with her hair.  I don't think Rauch was at OLTL at the time Zimmer was but their producer at the time probably wasn't much of a peach either.
    • I wonder if less set use was preparing for the move. They probably were preparing for this for awhile now
    • The early part of the season is decent. After that, Season 9 is one of the worst seasons until season 13. Season 10 is a little worse.    That would have made sense, even if it cost us one of my favorite scenes (Ben putting Lilliemae in a headlock). That's an excellent storyline and leads to the show's last strong season finale.
