Maria Arena Bell a Puppet HW?

Featured Replies

Did I say undeniably and very precisely I want her to say? NO! So the two of you should stop accusing me of Maria-love etc.

The problem is that you keep misunderstanding me and I'm too lazy to write a long post explaining a few things.

*AHEM*

I've explained already why I'd prefer she stayed then another completely clueless HW coming on board.

(The role of DaytimeFan will be temporarily played by Jess Walton)

Oh but don't you see! It seems to apparent that you want her to stay! The two of us are farrrr too simple to understand the nuances of your pseudo Maria love.

Well I'm so sorry, I didn't have the facts.

I don't see me saying I want her to stay. I said I prefer her to another HW. That's it. I just don't want another Latham. Very distinct things.

May dream scenario is this: you and DaytimeFan get Natalie as HW and then Y&R hits a 2.8 and I sit in front of my screen eating strawberries with aceto balsamico and a little frizzante on the side. Enjoying myself enormously because your dreamgirl failed.

Just admit it, Sylph, you're Maria's biggest fan and wants her to stay. :P

MARIA LOVER!!!

I admit I like Maria, but not as a writer. Frankly, my whole frustration with this show and everything surrounding it now isthe fact that I cannot get my dream HW to be Y&R's next HW. That it. Nothing else.

Ms Nancy Curlee?

A good choice if I ever heard one.

Yeah. Together with David Shaughnessy and some thorough staff cleaning.

I'm really, really depressed because my show is just dying a slow and painful death in front of my very own eyes. And there's nothing I can do. To add to the whole mess - the execs behind the scenes might hire another awful HW and then I can say goodbye.

I wish I could accept this whole thing. :(

And how do you know that Ms Nancy Curlee ain't interested?

She's not, when she left GL in early 94, it was for good. I can't blame her, I wouldn't want to put up with this corporate bullshit that plagues daytime these days.

I would kill for someone to hire her as a consultant or something though. She knows how to do sublime storytelling.

Well if that's the situation I don't think there is any reason to mope about it. So she's out of the picture. Move on, there are other great writers. Some you like, some you don't. But many worthwhile options that aren't LML.

Women 18 to 48 and older want to drool over hard bodied men. It is just about summer time, why haven't Brad or J.T. or Daniel or Neil or Nick taken their shirts off as yet? David Vickers is nicely parading around OLTL in his undies.

Speak for yourself, I don't find JT, Daniel, Neil or Nick all that hot, shirt on or not. They're good looking guys, but them taking their shirts off does nothing for me.

Now David Vickers, yummy. There's just something about him, I think it's more about the WHOLE package with him.

Here's a little bit Michael Logan wrote about Curlee in 2005:

http://www.courierpress.com/ecp/entertainm...4169956,00.html

Reader Question: Whatever happened to one of the last great head writers, Nancy Curlee? Was her "GL" experience so bad that she vowed never to return to the biz? Is this one more thing we can blame on JFP, along with Maurice Benard's mumbling, the death of "AW" and the decline of civilization (at least according to some "GH" fans)? What can we do to lure NC back to this once-magnificent genre? — Red

Logan: Nancy Curlee is one of the big "gets" in the soap world, and if she ever returns to the biz it'll be sizzling news indeed.

When she ended her terrific head-writing stint at "GL" in the early '90s — a gig she shared with her husband Stephen Demorest and (of all people) James E. Reilly (now of "Passions" and "Days" fame) — she insisted she wanted to be a stay-at-home mom. I've never met Nancy, but we had some long and amazing chats on the phone back in her "GL" heyday — she is deeply passionate about writing, she's whip-smart, and she has one of those sweet, milky, seductive Southern-belle accents that make us guys go stupid.

In short, I was cuckoo for Curlee. She was coy about the specifics of her exit, but seemed really happy to have a real life. Beverlee McKinsey, the original Alexandra, always credited Nancy with being the best of the best — the writer who brought Alexandra to full, sardonic bloom — and that's quite a kudo. For you newbies, McKinsey was the greatest actress EVER to grace soaps, and she always will be.

There are great writers. I bet you'd love Jackie C. more than Kay A. But executives have a whole different way of thinking: you've seen the same story repeat itself until exhaustion. The same old bad writers get hired.

Look at Hogan's case: he lost a million of DOOL's viewers and as a reward he gets to write for top US soap.

Explain that to me.

Oh as much as I love Jackie C...she isn't suited to Y&R, at all. Kay A is suited to Y&R.

Hogan's case at DAYS: I think he's gotten the Y&R gig because Sony figured why pay him to do nothing when they could put him to work at Y&R.

If I were running Y&R, I'd try and find a Ron Carlivati. We need someone who loves the show and is also fresh blood. I'd have various former Y&R writers submit a story bible and pick the best from the lot. People like Hogan (who apparently was a frontrunner to replace B&E at AMC) and Maria Bell are just being handed a job without presenting anything. And don't tell me she did because there are no fcuking stories on my tv screen. Actually I take that back, David Chow's past is a story, but that's about it. I don't know enough to save "JIM HOUGHTON" or "Natalie Minardi Slater" or "Lyndsy DuFour" for HW!!!! I need to see a story bible and then I'll pick. And I'd require that HW to fill the staff with former Bell writers, including MAB as a continuity expert. That's all. Let her stick to researching Y&R history which she seems somewhat good at. I doubt it could be one of the LML writers since they constantly rewrote it with that crackhead.

Maybe I digressed a bit, but getting to the point--I DO NOT think Maria is a puppet. I think she's a rookie who is in over her head. I don't understand how there is no sense of panic. Even the thing with Hogan seems calm. Maybe he'll bring the panic with his outrageous stories. They need to pull an ABC and bring back everyone possible. Remind everyone how great the show used to be during this important anniversary year. By now LML would've given us an earthquake, flood, several shootings, Katherine, Jill, Neil and Devon would all be dead and there'd be at least four rapes. Sure it's crap, but it's exciting crap which is always better than boring crap because people will at least tune in for those exciting one or two episodes.
