OLTL: Discussion for the week May 19-23

Last week Tom Casiello praised OLTL. This week it's another soap writer, Sara A. Bibel:

I want to celebrate a show that's getting it right - One Life To Live. I'm not the first person to sing the praises of OLTL's headwriter Ron Carlivati. (Hey, daytime, great things happen when you promote from within!) But I want to add my voice to the chorus. Carlivati has turned the show into what a soap opera ought to be - with humor, likable characters, rootable couples and umbrella stories that utilize the show's history. It's both escapist and relatable. It's also the only soap which feels like it takes place in the 21st century. Last Friday's episode, cleverly titled "Uncle-cest Is Best" featured a sequence in which David Vickers broke the 4th wall as he delivered a monologue that explained how he ended up as a bus boy in a Texas diner. Using nothing but limbo sets, the show managed to portray how David's nascent television career was hilariously derailed by the writers strike. (I can relate.) The same episode also contained a well-shot location sequence and, oh yeah, a guest appearance by Snoop Dogg. It was the most entertaining, original hour of television -daytime or primetime. I watched last week. This week features a soap wedding - the kind where the whole cast shows up in fabulous dresses and big secrets are revealed. Remember those?

Discuss the best show in daytime!

The Best Show in Daytime. That's all that needs to be said right there. Talk about root-able couples. In May during the height of sweeps, this show had Jared and Natalie make love for the first time, Antonio and Talia reconnected after a faux breakout. There's family drama with The Mannings. Vets are all over the show, involved in major story lines and everyones seems to be getting screen time. They even found a realistic logical reason for one of their characters to be on a stripper pole. Go Rex!!! There's a wedding coming up that people actually want to see what's going to happen along with a viable believable triangle story. There are plenty of secrets being kept that makes good story telling rather than secrets that make no sense what so ever!!! The consequences of these coming out one day will be good, must see TV. Imagine all of that, PLUS Snoop Dogg and David Vickers!!!

I'm loving this show and am happy that other people are loving it too. I hope the ratings increase.

I'm trying to get my mom to start watching. We shall see if she asks if I recorded it(yeah I watch live and record lol) tomorrow. We did have a little OLTL chat yesterday so I think my master plan is working. LOL

The wedding stuff should be awesome!

Sometimes I think it's a little sad that Adrianna is on her way out. She, Gigi and Rex make a great soap triangle that could last for years. At first I was bored to death with this character during her faux-Cassie era. Gary Tomlin's Adrianna Carrington Colby Dexter I couldn't stand. But this girl who doesn't want to lose her man I enjoy watching. And I am a Gigi fan! Lol

Cole and Starr act like spoiled brats. Pregnant Starr and all this airtime to the "star-crossed teen couple" was way too boring for me. When I marrry Todd the first thing I am going to do is to send Starr to a private school in Mendorra. Or in Eterna. Or even in the Old West.

I am furious that I never got to see the REAL secrets exposed! What was Miles's secret? What was Alison's? Who is Rex's father?

If Brody is actually C.J. Roberts as many people believe, then Brody's mother who lied to Gigi about her son dying was TINA??? I doupt that.

I can't wait for Monday's episode!

You're not alone there, whenever I watch live (mostly the summer) I tape the soaps in addition - just in case.

Big YES here. Just as suddenly as Adriana got her bitchy bangs, she shortly afterward grew in dimension. I believe I said earlier that I selfishly hope Melissa Gallo Fumero returns. OLTL could use a character like her - like the original conception of Rachel from AW or young Erica from AMC; a character who is capable of love but always hurts the ones she loves most (her mother, her men, untimately her children). Now I am not saying MGF is of that calibre.. .YET.

I don't mind the Starr and Cole story all that much. I was surprisingly impressed by Brandon Buddy's take on the whole thing on The View.

As for the other secrets... who knows? The Alison one bugs me the most.

I don't think Brody is CJ. However, Brody might know CJ.

I'm loving OLTL more and more, but I just feel after the good Langston and Markko this week, they are going to go back to playing second fiddle to Starr and Cole.

they've got such a good thing with those two characters, and Ron brought them back to perfect form this last week, I don't want them back burned again...

I prefer Langston and Marko over Starr and Cole. L&M are too cute together!

L&M are so original and different for soaps it just works. With Ron writing them both characters have their edge back and the pairing has their own edge back, and it's rocks. But it just seems like they are headed to play second fiddle to this baby stuff.
