General Hospital’s Stephen Macht: Can Character Actors Save Soaps?

By Marlena De Lacroix

Every week for months, there have been rumors that Stephen Macht’s tough mob lawyer character, Trevor Lansing, is about to be whacked on General Hospital. So, while there’s still time, I’d like to say that I’m really enjoying Macht’s performances in the role this season. Yes, Macht, the 60ish actor with the pock markets, the slitty, beady brown eyes, and the formidable stack of gray-white hair. I bet he’s never heard the word “hottie” in his life. Read More

Word, Marlena! I should hate Trevor Lansing but I don't and it's because of Stephen. Macht is a phenomenal actor. I love his scenes with Rick Hearst. What a great father/son duo.

Sorry, I disagree. I think Stephen is a great actor but Trevor needs cement shoes along with the trampy Claudia and 'Yawnny". Get this newbie mob family off my screen. I don't see this chemistry between Rick and Stephen, if I would tape GH, it would be FF material for me, which sucks because I'm such a die hard Rick Hearst fan - I wanted something great for him with this story and he's gotten SQUAT.

Am I bitter? Damn right and I have no quams about admitting it.

IA with her about Macht and think it is too bad he hasn't gotten THE story that would have made Trevor a worthwhile character -- a slow-cooking, full-blown confrontation between him and Ric which could have fed story for months to come for the both of them, and Sonny. And even Mike! Instead, as SoapQueen puts it, his potential has been wasted in order to launch the "bad" Zucchini mobsters while reinforcing "good" mobulars Scummy & Jesus.

In other words, the Mob is DESTROYING this show.

IA with Marlena's main point, though. If soaps chose talent over vapid good looks (and that talent comment goes for the writing and producing teams, too), then Daytime would be in a less precarious place right now. You only have to watch some great soaps from the 70s where talented character actors were in abundance. They didn't call it the Golden Age for nothing. The sad part is, GH used to lead the way in terms of picking talent (Tony Geary, Leslie Charleson, Jane Eliot, Denise Alexander, Genie Francis, Finola Hughes, Ian Buchanan, Tristram Rogers, etc., even Maurice Benrad once upon a time). Unfortunately, a talented character actor can only do so much with horrid writing.

    • Hayley and June have to be related, if not... why the focus on June. Dani/Andre = fast forward material.  #FreeAndre Kat and Samantha: Sassy isn't cute.  Sassy gets your ass whooped Eva: It's nice one member of her family is welcoming to her.  And I'm glad that the mention of her previous career in hair is being used here. Anita:  Given the way she's acted in a few scenes already, I could easily see her being a backstabber and leaving her group behind.  Is the group more like the Supremes or more like the Pointer Sisters?   This was more of a filler day, but sometimes you need a down day in order to process the last several episodes of plot movement.
    • -- I'm on record as enjoying the new writers at DAYS, but add me to the list of those who have big problems with the hospital purchase being tied to the miracle drug. I'll accept a lot under the "It's A Soap" banner, but I hate it when it goes ludicrous. -- Recast Rachel isn't bad, but she isn't Rachel. She doesn't make me hate her and think she's obnoxious when she walks into a room, so she doesn't work.
    • Either him or Doug III. Those are the only guys in town that she's not related to

He goes to the same tanning salon as his brother, Rex  That could be a pretty good addition to this storyline

    • Do I promise that I left that conversation? Yeah, sure, if you want to call it a promise. It just wasn't going anywhere. It's also not a big deal.
    • What do you mean?  Sarah told Xander about the drug as soon as she found out about it, and before eating the scone.   She also told Xander not to buy the hospital in March because the impending lawsuits from the sabotaged set of Body & Soul would eventually lower the price of the hospital. (one assumes Bonnie and Justin's lawsuits have been forgotten) In fact, she called it a money pit at the time, and now she and her daughter stand to make a fortune. Just as, she knew that Philip's claim to the fortune were both fraudulent, and a good distraction to keep Xander from making a bid until the time was right... Even more proof that Dr. Sarah Horton-Kirakis is the true evil genius of Salem.
    • Now what was I just talking about? lol. I was not expecting to see Jacob today.    VERNON!!!!!!! LOL.
    • No Tea. No Shade. Just facts. Oooo...Kat vs Eva...the gift that keeps on giving.   I can't believe we are getting friction between Andre and Nicole. That said...loving these scenes.
