Y&R: John Abbott...

I loved John, but it's so annoying, an insult to Jerry's talent and an insult to the intelligence of Y&R viewers to constantly keep showing the Abbott patriarch as a ghost. Honestly, LML's decimated the Abbotts, and left Jack all by his lonesome, it's just cheap and cheesy to keep bringing John back as a ghost time and tme and time and time again. Honestly, he's on more dead than he was alive, it's like Cassie all over again. There are situations where a character can come back from the dead, and depending on the character and the story and the story's integrity etc. I can accept back-from-the-dead, on a per-case basis... but honestly, no half-backs. They're dead or they aren't. Period.

Ghosts are annoying, except perhaps right after the person's died, for one or two episodes, but honestly... is there a bus that takes people from Soap Opera Heaven back to the cities or do they carpool?

In John's case it's just frustrating to see this piller of the community languish, go to jail, and then the cruel suckerpunch: On his BIRTHDAY he gets to come home to his family from prison... only to die of a stroke. It was sick actually... and think of how much drama they forfeited. John never found out about Gloria's hoebaggishness, or that Ashley wasn't his daughter... he went to his grave not knowing many key secrets.

Basically it's just another way in which the writers give the finger to Abbott fans, and people who support a family that just might have still had a bit of integrity. Aw well, we'll always have Victor and the rest right? Victor's great for a laugh, he's a real caricature (not to be confused with character) but I really miss John and I think Jerry Douglas was very talented.

I often wonder if Y&R has somehow become Crossing Over or something.

ASHLEY ISN'T JOHN'S DAUGHTER??? I didn't know that. It didn't even come up when he died.

I think it's weird that John never haunts Gloria. Any of those shows about contacting the dead usually reveals that they know what's going on in the present. I guess he didn't gain heavenly wisdom.

ICAM

Actually, John is not a ghost but Jack's conscious that's why only he(Jack) can see him. It's one thing to have Jack's conscious continue to beat him up over the things that he(Jack) has done , but it is another thing to have that conscious (in the form of his dead father) to go on and on adnauseam about how he(John) LOVED and cared for a person like Gloria. It makes John look like a demented OLD FOOL given what we know about GloHo.

I kind of remember John having second thoughts about Glo before he got sick, and then she upped the Viagra dosage. In any case alive or dead John Abbott has been ruined.

Add one more to LML's body count...

hmm maybe this past year was some sort of twisted dream... what if for Christmas we see John wake up in his own bed and tell Gloria he had a dream of all the stuff that would have happened if he had died, like an its a wonderful life thing. then Ashley could still be there, and we could just undo LML and her body count of character assassinations.

I'd probably say that sounded crazy in any other instance, but with the amount of damage LML did to Y&R your idea would be an easy way to erase all the damage that was done. They'd still have to explain why Dru isn't around, with LML out it would be nice if they could get Victoria Rowell and Adrienne Leon back.....

It's absolutely appalling what LML has done to the character of John, and anytime "Ghost John" is on I change the channel; it's so hard to watch a character that was so great at one time be reduced to what we've been forced to watch.....

GLOHO NEEDS TO GO!!!

I too hate the ghost/conscience thing. Love Jerry Douglas but it is just ridiculous.

I'm a fan of the 'This Whole Year Was a Nightmare scenario' but the way I would have it is John Abbott wakes up from the stroke he sustained right before he died. That way we get to undo it all and John can recover and the show can go on!

à la Bobby Ewing is actually alive on Dallas!!

Besides, Y&R has never done something so campy, like voiding a whole season or having every victim of a serial killer actually be alive... so we could let this one retcon thing go and they could bounce back from it, I think we can give them a get out of LML hell free card right?

    • Oh god I haven’t gotten to that episode yet, you have to be [!@#$%^&*].ing kidding me. I will say to my surprise, the Danny actor no longer bothers me. He has actually improved quite a bit.
    • I hear what you are saying, but I feel there is definitely an opportunity for improvement. If the set problem is to remain, then the whole focus has to change. Business has to take a back seat if there are no sets available to support story. As I have said before return to Jabot and have a number of characters working and interacting there. They seem super reluctant to do it but Victor needs to be a more supporting character.  Eric Braeden seems determined to carry on and that is of course admirable, but keeping Victor as this dominating force has been detrimental. Have a sweet reunion of Sharon and Nick and marry them off for good. Bring on Faith and I'd even have Adamson back as Noah at this point to support Nick/Sharon in a parenting role. They really need to bite the bullet and drop one of the following -Billy, Chelsea, Phyllis or make them recurring like Abby/Ashley with appearances or short term stories when appropriate. Free up some space for new or returning characters- Noah, Allie, Fen, Moses, even a recast Dylan.
    • Today was really boring. I get we needed to have Martin accepting Eva but man I needed some Leslie today. Anita being hung up on was intriguing though.
    • Yup, that's John Mahoney, a few months before the star-studded 1986 production of The House of Blue Leaves. Also, God bless TPTB for thinking that a circus storyline was gonna grab the hearts and attention of viewers.
    • I don't think we have. I suspect @Paul Raven could confirm it for sure.  ETA: off the top of my head, I counted 13 sets (counting the hotel room Doug/Vanessa made up in separate from the hotel room Ted is in unless it was refashioned).
    • Have we seen them? There’s a bit more variety than some of the other soaps but I feel like GH still has them beat. Right now everyone literally only eats at the country club or Orphy Genes. Jessica and Samantha look like twins.
    • Dante to Kristina: You turned out okay.

    • Am I misremembering or were they bragging about over 20 sets? Have we seen them all cause I feel like we haven’t and I’d like to see some more.
