That is true, but you have to consider the times we're in. Back then, Days was not in ratings and financial trouble, which it is in now. When most of those characters left at one point, Days was more of an ensemble show, but somewhere since then, the show has trained its audience to rely on the big 4, which it should've never done in the first place.

Days is currently 6-7 out of 9 soaps, with Passions soon gone and Days getting a new time slot in some of the big markets, things look worrisome in the future. Remember, this is a show that used to be able to rival GH and B&B. With the show's declining ratings, advertisers aren't very willing to spend money on the show and that right there can kill a show alone.

Days needs to keep as many of its popular cahracters as possible.

I don't like to hear when any actor loses a job. But I have to say, Drake has been sleepwalking through his scenes. It's like he's not even making an attempt to act anymore. I hope that he at least tries to make more of an effort with the new execs in charge or else I don't see him lasting much longer on the show.

DAYS wasn't facing imminent cancellation when those characters left. Also, there was a huge market for attracting new viewers with new characters. That market no longer exists. Daytime TV in 2007 is all about keeping the viewers you've got, which means keeping the big stars they're familiar with.

Look, the reality is that if NBC wants Days off the air, it doesn't matter what they do to the cast. Its sad but true. I want Days to stay on the air as long as I'm living, but I'm not TPTB. If they get rid of Drake, and they already plan on burying the show, it won't effect the inevitable outcome. JMO.

I'm not sure. I'm not a writer, just a soap opera addict. :)

But I have seen major characters successfully written off of other soaps and the shows continued to go on just fine. If John were to be written off, he'd have to be killed off in a spectacular way while doing something heroic. His death would then kick off some other storylines -- either solving the mystery of how he died and the repercussions of his death on the rest of his family, friends, etc. Perhaps some mystery about his past could be revealed after his death which would set off some storylines. I think Deidre Hall could really pull off the emotional scenes dealing with the grief of losing the love of her life. Plus it would give viewers a good cry--something that has been sorely lacking on Days. And if finally Days could show her deal with trauma in a realistic way while at the same time try to get to the bottom of John's murder, that might be interesting. If he were to be written out, he'd definitely have to go out with a bang, not a wimper.

Please keep in mind that I'm not suggesting at all that John should be written off. I'm just answering the question.

Drake and Dee both were off for 2 months last summer. The ratings went UP. I don't think Days can afford to cut Dee but Drake they can. If he isn't willing to give it his all and is going to continue to insult the talent of some of his castmates, can him. Seriously, the money can be better used on those that work hard and those that don't insult their castmates. I would rather see hyim go then some of the other vets or someone like Lauren Koslow.

What did I miss? What did Drake say?

I guess I can admit now that I haven't been that impressed with Drake since the mid 90's. When they were getting rid of all those actors for the SSK storyline, I thought John should have been one of the victims. I just think the character is played out and Drake doesn't have the range to help the character grow. This on top of his hefty salary makes him a huge liability, IMO.

I do question the wisdom getting rid of a familiar actor when Days is in so much trouble, though. Especially if the void is going to be filled with vapid [!@#$%^&*] like the Vegas airline storyline containing actors with even less talent than Drake.

So, the way I see it, Days is screwed either way.

How would you write John off the show? and what would you do with Marlena?

me for one would find out John was really Forrest Alamain-that way Vivian can return for his funeral and decide to stay in town...and have John either stabbed or died, maybe burned or drowned so his body wont be found maybe one day he will return (maybe)

Marlena returns to work doesnt know what to do with her life, feels not safe w/o john her protector around....maybe have Marlena fall for an older Horton...Bill???? or someone else....i dont know really what i would do with marlena but i would keep her around...years later find out (Kristen has held John hostage)

There are two things I see could happen for Drake with John on Days.

One: John could be headlined with a huge story as being the half-brother of Stefano and Shawn which definitely would be something the Brady's may be inclined to sweep under the rug forever.

Two: John could be killed off. Wayne Northrop could show up as the twin brother or just brother of Dr. Alex North to help Marlena settle his estate and to tell her about the son they (Alex and Marlena) had together and help her locate him. Of course, they would fall in love along the way........swoon. I'd love that one.

I know Josh Taylor is Roman now, but God I long for the time when Roman and Marlena went to Cozumel to renew their love and once and for all commit to each other.

To ME (MY OPINION) Wayne Northrup IS Roman Brady. 'nough said.

As for John, he is a huge part of Days history. I really love Drake and Dee's chemistry. They are magical together. BUT, the magic is starting to fade, and a change may be in order if the writers can't find some way to recapture the magic.

IMO: Marlena needs her own storyline, and John needs one too, one not involving his past for once. I'm tired of rewriting John Black over and over. I'm sure Drake is too.
