PASSIONS: TV Guide Article reveals sex of secret lover...

Being on the DL is not progressive thinking, it's backwards and portrays AA males in a negative light. Passions, of all shows, doesn't have the track record or the creativity or the intelligence to portray this with the depth and seriousness it should be handled. There are a handful of black males on daytime TV, half of them are thugs or former thugs and treated like crap by their respective towns, the others are glorified extras. If I could point to one other positive example of a black male on Passions I would have less issues with this.

The idea that the man who has had a rape victim repeatedly attacked almost daily since her rape can do this with any sensitivity is laughable.

why? Why black men? Why not black characters?

I guess I don't get it when people judge a show for "men" or "women" of a certain color being portrayed a certain way.

"Passions" has plenty of "positive" characters who are a part of a minority.

Forget Chad.

You "bother" to piss us off. You keep bringing up the "canceled" thing to insult us and/or hurt us. THe point is, IT'S WRONG to do that. So stop it. We're enjoying the show, we're enjoying the twists, and IT AIN'T OVER YET.

so let's watch it in PEACE, please.

Bravo!!

And I applaud Passions for bringing the "down low" aspect to daytime. Passions has portrayed ALL its ethnic characters very respectfully, so I don't see the problem in adding another interesting element to play with. Don't expect it to be taken seriously, though. There's no need to.

Awww, poor you. You know I have been saying for months now (maybe not 5 months ago in SEPTEMBER) but since November Sweeps at least, that the show was hitting us over the head AS USUAL with the fact Chad is sleeping with a man. Annnnnnd you and Rick want to act now like you're so clever by dragging out posts from September and quoting them, and being all "right," and frankly, it's annoying and childish. At the end of the day, the show is still canceled so I don't even know why I bother.

We know how bad you think PSNS is/was/will always be and your so happy that this miserable horriblly written show is canceleld.

So maybe it's time that you just don't "bother" anymore.

Oh, I completely agree. "Passions" knows what it is, and its fans know what to get from it. Maybe we WILL get a well-written "down low" story with a multitude of layers for the characters, maybe not. Who cares? The show's about shock value, and it always has been, which is why it's nice because sometimes, the show HAS thrown in the "meaty" stuff, too, when you least expect it. Who's to say that won't happen for this, perhaps its most high-profile story ever? I'm just going to enjoy the ride. And Chad's "ride" with his mystery hunk!

This will be incredible, GROUNDBREAKING drama. And King, you're probably bitter because you know it, and you know it's going to rock because this is the shocker THAT will turn heads.

Groundbreaking like an earthquake... read: disaster.

JER doesn't have the capabilities to give this story substance. His characters are not fleshed out. They're all interchangeable with one another, because they have no personalities... they have no substance or dimension. And thus far, JER has shown no interest in fixing that.

Because of that, I have no reason to believe that this will be anything more than a cheap shock-value flash in the pan. And when the initial shock wears off, nobody will care, because nothing of depth will have been done to make the story resonate with fans for the long-term. Then again, Passions is done in August, so I guess long-term doesn't matter. Not saying that to be mean... I'm just sayin'. Nothing matters now, as far as cause-and-effect, because the effect has already been revealed.

Because the portrayal of black males in popular culture has been insulting and demoralizing for literally centuries. Because daytime has for the most part made a choice to ignore it's huge African-American viewership. Because you can't just show the bad, the good has to be featured in there somewhere and the good side of black men in TV, movies, music, etc. is few and far between. Because I'd like to be able to pick more than 5 people on TV that I can see as an even-handed and positive characterization of a black man.

Honest question: When was the last time anything on Passions was well-written?

Stories like this "down low" story are what have Passions "down low" in the Neilsens... if it plays out like I'm expecting it to.

Exactly. And I agree with everything you said.

I'm just going to enjoy the ride, because it's a great shocker, and that -- as true "Passions" fans know -- is what the show is all about. Just the RIDE. The shocks. Sometimes, though, we DO get the "meaty" stuff, so don't count JER out. He may surprise you. If we don't, I won't mind. It's one hell of a way to go out -- on a groundbreaker.

Hmm...

well, it comes and goes.

The Ivy reveal was well-written; the aftermath with all the damn cell phones was NOT, lol.

That's pretty recent.

I'm sure there are other examples of good writing. I'm just too tired right now, lol. Let me go to bed, people!!

EXACTLY.

Passions is not about fleshed-out characters or meaty storylines. It's about shock value and campiness and pure entertainment. THAT is why I watch Passions. That is why I love it. And that is why it has achieved cult status in the entertainment industry.

Umm, "cute" word-play there...but I'll be optimistic and say it'll earn the show a 3.0 and the net will rethink its decision to cancel...the show will rebound in the ratings by a miracle of God, Zucker will realize he was an idiot, (Big) Reilly will too, they'll KILL that "Today" fourth hour and announce the "unprecedented" renewal of "Passions," a la "7th Heaven" :)

I disagree about the aftermath. JER set up an awesome story for Grace that ties into the new evil bad guy, and will most likely tie into the big battle between good and evil that will conclude the show. It also set the stage for Grace's even MORE dramatic return when it's revealed she's alive. Honestly, it's more exciting for an angry Grace to show up ALIVE in Harmony than to just show up from Europe. lol

Running on those kinds of fumes only gets you so far. It's good for what it is... but it's not a long-term sell.

You begin to not care about the shocks when you don't care about the characters, and the only way to care about the characters to have them fleshed out.

Well, let's hope you're right about the set-up. I do have my conspiracy theory about JER knowing this was the last year, lol, so hopefully that was written to bring back the good vs. evil fight :)

But I disagree about IMMEDIATE fallout from the Ivy reveal. Because the way those characters talked back and forth on cell phones was pathetic, Rion. lol. Come on. It takes a VERY talented actor to pull off phone scenes like that. Grace talked with Kay, Sam, Eve, Ivy...and sometimes the conversations fell flat. It would have been MUCH better in person.

Rick, maybe you shouldn't bring my name into a thread if you don't want me chiming in then.
