In terms of graphic violence and content matter, could any soap air a story/scene like this in the post-9/11 world?

I think so. Hell, look at any sweeps event from the last few years on GH.

Seriously. If GH can get away with all the stuff they've done in the last 5 years, I don't see why all the other soaps couldn't do something like the Coronation Massacre again.

Yeah, GH had the mob shootout thing after 9/11, the hostage situation is this sweeps event and that involves gun fire and an explosion and last year AMC had the Mardi Gras explosion.

Sure they can.

GH does it all the time. Passions has females undergoing extreme amounts of violence too. I don't see why they can't.

But rape is a lot different from a bloody gunfire massacre. For example, no one died on Passions from rape.

True.

My point is if stuff like that can be done and shown and if GH can have mob shootouts all the time, then I don't see why soaps can keep this type of storytelling up.

Hmm..I never really watched the violent GH stuff, but I still think the coronation massacre is the most violent thing Days ever did. Even during the Stalker storyline, the murders were relatively tame...sure, Cassie in the pinata was shocking, but we didn't see her actual "death". So yeah, the coronation massacre is still Days' most violent and disturbing moment of all time.

But rape ellicits a much stronger viewer reaction than someone getting shot or dying.

When it comes down to shoot-outs and stuff, it's not about the violence of it, it's the amount. That's why GH gets flack, they seem to have a mob war every 3 months. Passions is having a rape every other day. It's overkill. Random acts of violence play much better than continuous violence.
