Carolyn Hinsey gets another Y&R backlash!

Well I guess you shouldn't mess with Y&R fans!

Sound Off has a letter from a Jewish viewer none too pleased with Carolyn Hinsey's comments re: Y&R doing a Rosh Hashanah episode.

Says they can't believe her cruel comments about her religion, and that not only did they appreciate the show doing this, they had their children watch the episode too. Says they don't consider it 'lecturing' but a 'lesson', and don't we hear about Christmas and other holidays from all the other characters? There's another one printed w/ CH's column and she went on the defensive about it in her column. And there's even an Editor's Note, saying SOD received many emails taking issue with CH's comments & saying they welcome the scenes as a long-overdue recognition of a religion mostly ignored on daytime. Basically the Editor's Note is a sort-of apology and says hopefully Y&R's effort is only the beginning of a more diverse canvas on soaps.

 I love it. I mean, really. I'm not trying to say LML is perfect, but trying to inject a little diversity into daytime is far from one of the problems with Y&R. I'm not Jewish, but enjoyed those scenes too.

Carolyn was being attacked b/c she gave her opinion. This is what she said in the latest issue of SOD:

A few issues ago, I wrote about how preachy Young and Restless has become and I cited the Rosh Hashanah episode (along with all the diseases du jour) as examples of how boring the show has gotten. Well according to some opinionators, that makes me ani-Semitic.

Have we MET? As I said in the aforementioned column, the woreful underrepresentation of Jewish characters on soaps in criminal. My point was that each preachy holiday is a bore, and that includes any Christmas that didn't include a missing baby found in a manger or a returned-from-the-dead heroine appearing in the back of the church. Something has to happen while a soap is "educating" us or the episode will fall flat. The reasion General Hospital's Nurses' Balls wored so well is because there was drama and action and murder and sex mixed in with the beautiful people spouting AIDS statistics from the stage. There was also a beloved longtime heroine (Robin) afflicted with HIV to make us care. Soaps should entertain us first and always, and when they don't, I am going to call them on it. That doesn't make me anti-Semetic or anti-meningitis or anti-autism or anti-breast cancer survivor or anti-deap people. It just makes me a critic with an opinion, which is my job.

Damn, that didn't seem like a lot when I was typing it. All I can say is....BIG FAT WORD to what Carolyn said. I can speak nothing wrong of the woman. She rocks my socks.

I imagine one would want to be anti-meningitis, can you imagine being FOR meningitis?

That was a dumb thing to say. She obviously wrote in a hurry. :D

As I said already last week, Hinsey is right on the money of the central problems with Y&R but she totally failed making her point.

As a lady of words she'd have known better but hey...

Hinsey is terribly overrated. They need two opinionators who watch their own shows on a daily basis and Hinsey can focus on her favorites. She spreads herself too thin pretending to watch all 9 soaps consistently.

 Thats funny! BTW, I agree with Hinsey that Brad being Jewish is extremely preachy, I just love that she's getting called on her [!@#$%^&*] for once. Like on The View when they announced Emmy nominations. Right in front of Frons she admitted that GH plays for sweeps and doesn't try otherwise, but still it deserved to win? Or on the SOAPnet Emmy special where she said Y&R deserved to win, but GH had exciting sweeps. You can think she's just slagging of Latham, but she has always been a GH pimper.

I've enjoyed Victor's epilepsy and Devon's meningitis, but this? Crap! It all stems from the fact that the build up for this story was so good and what we got is just nothing you can get excited about. Reliquaries?

I am still waiting for someone to write Brad as the manipulative slimeball he truly is. That is what I hoped we'd get out of this story. Still, even after cheating on his wife and showing ZERO remorse, he is not caught.

I hope he goes to jail for his thighs of steel.

Sometimes Carolyn is right on, and other times she's a mess. But her blatant bias towards GH, even when it the writing is horrible, is painful to see.

ITA. I've always thought they needed one opinion columnist for each network, or something like that. She can't possibly know everything about every soap, even if it's her job. <_<

Can you trace her General Hospital bias? Why is she so in love with the show even if it's horrible?
