ALL: Character original names
I believe Carol stayed on and tried to save her marriage to Linc and form a relationship with her son, Phillip, who had killed his real father Nick Davis. Was it worth it to have Rosemary Prinz only agree to 6 months and then drop the character for good? At least a recast Amy could have returned say a year later to play out the story. It never made sense to me that Amy would just leave and that was that.

GH: May 2024 Discussion Thread
Well more fool Patrick if he went into that situation thinking otherwise. This man has been involved in daytime for years and must have many connections in the biz. Reaching out to a few of them would have given him a clear indication of the working environment and what to expect It's like people who go on reality shows and then complain about how they were portrayed. So unless he was made promises that weren't kept (have them in writing) I can't see why things would have been different. We'll probably never know the real story.

ALL: Errors, Myths, Omissions & Firsts that weren't
ATWT I think it has generally been accepted that the role of Grandpa Hughes was played by Will Lee in the first episode and he was dropped and Santos Ortega took over the next day. Here's a newspaper excerpt re Santos He missed charter membership In "World Turns" by one day. The show opened on CBS-TV with Don MacLaughlin as Chris Hughes, Helen Wagner as Nancy Hughes and William Johnstone as Judge Lowell on April 2, 1956. On the next day, Sandy was a replacement for Grandpa. In fact it was a couple of weeks into the show that Pa appeared. He was still living on the farm at that point. So Will Lee did appear for a day it seems but not on the premiere episode. Not sure if Pa appeared the next day or it was a few episodes before Santos took over.

Y&R May 2024 Discussion Thread
Now that they are no longer taping day for day. I'm sure it is more difficult to edit everything together and some things are dropped due to time restraints. In typical Y&R fashion, Chelsea seems to be spending the day at CL, moving tables in the process. Watching the scene where 2 60 plus men wrestle a 70 plus woman while an 80 plus man chloroforms her had me shaking my head. And then Victor spits out that he will never forgive Michael and Cole and they actually looked concerned. To think over 40 years later, Victor is still locking people in cages and feels justified in doing so. Full circle moment and zero character growth in that time.

NBC Daytime
The Times Recorder Zanesville Ohio Dec 21 1975 Dynamic Lin Bolen Raises Daytime Television Ratings Bv VERNON SCOTT HOLLYWOOD (UPD - Lin Bolen, who holds the highest position of any woman in the networks, has changed the face of daytime television almost single-handedly. Pity Lin doesn't have an even higher job than NBC vice president, daytime programs. Lin is a 34-year-old brunette native of Benton, 111., (pop. 10,000) weighs 98 well distributed pounds, chain smokes and is probably brighter than any of her superiors at the network. Since she assumed her job three years ago, NBC has surpassed ABC and CBS in daytime ratings. Among Lin's contributions is long-form pro-gramming, lengthening daytime soap operas from the traditional 30 minutes to an hour. But Lin's most impressive innovation is the addition of new game shows and the renovation of old ones. NBC's dazzling array of daytime games has wiped out the opposition. "Part of my responsibility is to look for the economic and social trends in our society," said Lin in a well modulated voice. "Right now we're in the midst of a recession, made worse by inflation. "Viewers want fantasy oriented games. It's the same thing that happened during the depression of the 1930s. People couldn't afford to spend money on what they wanted to do. .But they could afford to go to the movies for bank night, free dishes and escapist entertainment. "Our game shows allow viewers to win money and prizes vicariously. They can project themselves into the games by coming up with the answers at home. It's a form of fantasy participation. "We've added gambling to our shows the horse race on 'Celebrity Sweepstakes'; roulette on 'Wheel of Fortune'; a dice game on 'High Rollers'; and a pinball game on "The Magnificent Marble Machine.'" Lin Bolen, who spends half her time in Hollywood and half in New York offices, may be television's most knowledgable game show executive She said there are seven types of video game programs The hard question and answer show"' "Jeopardy." Celebrity entertainment panel, "Hollywood Squares." Word games, "Password." Audience participation, "Let's Make A Deal." Auctions, "The Price Is Right." Trivia games, "Gambit." Human interest, "Queen for a Day." "Human interest shows are too tacky for today's sophisticated viewers," she said. "They create sad situations and aren't bright and upbeat enough for people facing economic and social problems of their own. "Game shows were static when I came to the network. Contestants sat at desks with buzzers and bells. I tried to find new faces and personalities for emcees along with good ideas and visual gimmicks. "Our game shows are popular because we've added the unique gambling element to them. And now we're increasing the stakes." It is possible for a contestant to win as much as $100,000 on "High Rollers" in the course of a week. Before Lin took over the top prizes were about $7,500, but most contestants were lucky to take away $2,000. "By upping the stakes we've increased the fun and excitement," she explained. Lin was reminded that huge amounts of money involved on the "$64,000 Question" and a few other crooked game shows brought television to its knees back in 1958. "There isn't a chance of similar scandals happening again," she said. "We have new controls and safeguards. Individual producers no longer control the questions. "Even the master of ceremonies doesn't know the questions or answers or the contestants until he faces them on the air. "The contestants are chosen at random by a special watchdog committee the Compliance and Practices Department which reports to the Federal Communications John Paul Jones, who almost single-handedly recruited enough men to man the few ships of the new American Navy, was not given the overall command of the fleet he desired. He left America years later and ended his days as an officer in the Russian navy. Commission." Lin continues to experiment with daytime shows. She is lengthening "Hollywood Squares" and "Wheel of Fortune to an hour after the first of the year. "We've found some game shows build more suspense in the hour form," she explained. "Next I'd like to see a woman as a game show host. "Ninety per cent of daytime viewers are women. Research shows they are accustomed to the male voice and authority figure on the shows. They find a woman's voice irritating. But I'm working to overcome that." Lin also is developing a daytime comedy show, a first, starring David Steinberg. Another first is her 90-minute dramatic series, "First Ladies Diaries." Confident and fully autonomous, Lin Bolen is perhaps the best thing to happen to daytime television since the tube was invented.

GH: Johnny Wactor Shot & Killed During Robbery Attempt
SOD Feb 17 2020 MEET GH NEWCOMER JOHNNY WACTOR Reports of the death of Brando — son to Sonny’s cousin Gladys — have been greatly exaggerated, and the role is being played by daytime newbie Johnny Wactor. Though Ñ Wactor tried out for GH a few no -| times (and also auditioned for Y&R), “I think | had a little resistance toward daytime television,” admits the actor. “But I’ve been surprised, after having worked on the set with the cast and crew, finding out how much I’ve enjoyed it! Once I got on set, it’s really the closest thing to theater that I’ve done in front of a camera. It’s been a really thrilling experience.” Wactor turned to real-life pal Mark Grossman (Adam, Y&R) for tips on how to handle his new workplace. “But at the same time,” since news of his hiring was being kept under wraps, “| had to to be kind of vague and not even tell him that I had booked something, [so my questions were like], ‘What’s been shocking you? What have you been feeling like you wish you had known before you went on set?’ He was just kind of reiterating the level of preparedness you need to have.” On his first day, “I felt more excitement than nervousness, because there was a lot of action and not a whole bunch of heavy dialogue.” The nerves kicked in a bit on day two. “I had a lot of dialogue with Laura [Wright, Carly] talking about a lot of personal things in Brando's life, his past. Laura’s got such a presence about her. She’s so warm and gracious as a person, but then Carly Corinthos, she’s a strong an intimidating character. I think I flubbed a line at one point, but she was encouraging and patient. It was a great kind of baptism by fire. But since then, it’s just been a joy and exciting to come to work knowing that I get to work with her often, and Maurice [Benard, Sonny].” Wactor has been especially impressed with his new boss, Executive Producer Frank Valentini. “He is so hands-on on set,” the actor praises. “It's so cool to watch him and see this guy who is so dialed in and so enthusiastic and passionate about what he does. I watch him giving his input on other scenes and talking to the actors and then giving the same attention to detail talking with me, and it’s just really cool to work with a head boss who truly cares about the show.”

Hotel for Pets was very shortlived on NBC Radio. It sounds like it was a lighthearted serial. Haven't seen much but the sketchiest info on it. The last soap/serial to debut on radio,I believe.

Rhinemann Exchange (rpt) 8.4/10 NBC most committed to the format and pretty much succeeding apart from King and Loose Change, which bombed. Godfather was the movie with extra footage so strictly not a mini series IMO, same with the CBS retrospective. CBS flopped with Dain Curse which I think was their first mini. Interesting they chose a lesser known period piece, while ABC had nothing major to follow up from Roots in terms of attention grabbing.

Y., has completed two conditional sales for The Heart of Juliet Jones, five- day -a -week quarter -hour soap opera film series. Contract contains clause giving Official 60 days to negotiate sufficient number of sales to make production feasible. Sales were to KSD -TV St. Louis and Texas iv station. Obviously they couldn't get enough stations interested.

ALL: Convenient Couples
Guiding Light Sara and Adam. Both had been on the show for years and their marriage seemed a convenient way to give them some airtime and presence on the show. Adam only functioned as Roger's dad and Roger was gone. Sara had been through 3 marriages and had her son TJ and that was it. Sara could at least be used as a doctor. The pairing seemed pretty random.

Soaps that lost their original/core families
Over it's 20 yr run, Secret Storm slowly dropped the Ames family, losing Peter, Jerry and Susan along with Aunt Pauline and Grandma Grace- with only Amy left in the final years. On Search for Tomorrow, the Bergmans were the secondary family consisting of Stu, Marge and Janet. Later Janet had Gary, Liza and Danny. Stu and Marge had a later child Tom. By the end, only Stu and Liza remained.
