  1. Yes, agreed. Even in those times, viewers understood on some level that the Paul Lyndes and Charles Nelson Reillys were not the marrying kind. Moving on.. Tammy Grimes was a hot property after Broadway success with Unsinkable Molly Brown. She was offered the lead in Bewitched but instead went with her own sitcom. The Tammy Grimes show was one of the all time bombs up till that time, taken off after a few episodes which was unprecedented in that era .
  2. I wonder if Cenedella was always intended to be short term ? Were the Pollocks poached by GH or did they move there later on? Did they leave TD or contract not renewed? Lin Bolen was still Daytime chief at this stage. After achieving ratings success with the NBC lineup, ratings started to drop and panic set in. When did she leave? The AW expansion worked but Days suffered going up against ATWT. TD was under pressure from GL. Perhaps Jeff Young wasnt happy with Cenedella and went with DePriest.
  3. I have a very long list, but just a few at a time... Michael Sabatino Nat Polen Melinda Plank/Cordell Anthony Herrera Patricia Barry Robin Strasser Thanks!
  4. Paul Lynde was given 2 attempts at a sitcom, trading on his popular guest star appearances on other sitcoms, variety shows and , of course Hollywood Squares.
  5. My recollection is that perhaps John had an acquaintance with Katherine around the time that Jill and John were getting married due to mixing in the same social circle over the years but they were not friends.
  6. Didnt Lisa become rich from her marriage to Whit McColl? That was the 80s, where the wealthy characters became uber rich, which never made sense as to why they would be hanging around small towns and mixing with middle class folk. But the networks saw Dallas and Dynasty and thought they were all soaps so why not copy the successful nightime trend?
  7. Pretty sure that is the Foster house. I think the difference is Wes Kenney lit the sets brighter and went for wider shots.
  8. Suggestions? OK ... Mary K Wells Clarice Blackburn James Douglas Rod Arrants Ron Harper Millette Alexander Joseph Mascolo
  9. So the flashback of John finding Jack and Jill in bed was re-created with Jerry Douglas as it was Brett Halsey's John in the original scene.
  10. Debbie Reynolds tried a zany Lucy type character for her sitcom.
  11. Mickey Rooney had 3 attempts at a sitcom over his long career but none of them clicked.
  12. A letter to the NY TImes from then headwriter Bethel Leslie July 25 1971 To THE EDITOR: After you have been writing a daytime television serial for close to a year, even being unfavorably compared with Ingmar Bergman (Vincent Canby's recent review of “The Touch”) is a step in the right direction. It is clear to us, after read ng said review, that Canby sits down every afternoon at 3 o'clock to watch “The Secret Storm.” Obviously, the man is hooked. On behalf of the cast, crew, fellow‐writers and other journeymen of “Storms” — past, present and future—we thank him for his patronage.
  13. A 1971 obituary of actor Eugene Wood in NY Times mentions he appeared in Love of Life.
  14. Another World and SFT aired in Australia for several years. ATWT had 2 short runs on different networks in the 70s.
  15. Great to see you posting again! Could I suggest Lenka Peterson, Ann Flood and Gillian Spencer?
  16. That was Drakes first gig outside of Days since he joined.
  17. Fair enough but I will include music/variety when aperformer renowned in that area fails to make aconnection doing what they are known for. Dean Martin managed to go on to TV success with his show that captured his laidback persona and viewers loved it. But one time partner Jerry Lewis had 2 failed TV series that couldnt adapt his frenetic style for TV.
  18. I remember it played over end credits by a male vocal group sounding like 'The Association'
  19. Melba also had a short lived summer variety show.
  20. Ginger Rogers did a pilot for a show about twrn sisters. That was in 61, but it didnt air till 63.
  21. Jimmy also had a Mystery Movie 'Hawkins' that didn't work either. Must mention Lana Turner and her infamous disaster'The Survivors'. Later on her stint on Falcon Crest brought the show its best ratings to that time. Don't think Jane Wyman was thrilled...
  22. Diana Rigg tried a US sitcom 'Diana' in 1973. It bombed on NBC beaten by Gunsmoke and The Rookies.
  23. Bette Davis had several tries at a series. Something piloted in the late 50s ,cant recall the details. Then the infamous and horrendous 'The Decorator' in the mid 60s. Check it out on YouTube if you can. Later on The Judge and Jake Wyler and I think the TV movie 'Madame Sin was a pilot. Finally Hotel, but then she had the stroke and pulled out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7J2I9LxSF0
  24. Just about every season, a movie star/actor, Broadway identity or all round entertainer makes the leap to TV. Sometimes it works, sometimes not... Can we compile a list of performers who tried TV , but for whatever reason, didnt make a go of it. I'll start with Bette Midler who tried a CBS sitcom 'Bette' in 2000. It garnered a lot of publicity but died after 16 episodes. Charlton Heston finally agreed to a series with "The Colbys" after a 30 year plus movie career but the show limped along for 2 low rated seasons. Looking forward to your contrributions!
  25. Last weeks episode was a returrn to form. All the subplots werre amusing and even JLo didnt mess things up. That was Maree Cheatham as the grieving mother in the morgue.
