  1. Irna headwrote ATWT for its first 14 years but I think there were different producers. Luci Ferri was producer of TGL throughout the 50's, 60's and into the 70's but there were several different headwriters over that time.
  2. Marc Copage , who as a child played Diahann Carroll's son in Julia, auditioned for the role of Bobby on One Life to Live that went to Blair Underwood.
  3. And Louise had a role in the infamous primetime disaster'The Survivors'. Would be interesting to hear more about that also.
  4. Irna Phillips wrote AW and ATWT at the same time in 1964 and ATWT and TGL at one point.

  6. It's interesting to me that Rauch and Lemay got credit for AW Golden years, which pretty much fell apart once Lemay left even though Rauch stayed on through several headwriters. Which leaves me to believe that possibly without Rauch, Lemay would have flourished any way. Rauch, I think tried to make lightning strike twice when he hired Corinne Jacker, thinking that a playwright new to the soap genre would shake things up. He certainly seemed to give her free rein. I guess Rauch had to be credited with allowing his writers some freedom, even when the results were less than ideal. Or was what we saw onscreen the result of Rauch insisting on certain story decisions. Guess we'll never know, unless people from that era decide to talk freely.
  7. To me,that KC Collier doesn't seem to fit with soap writer. But I do agree that KC Collier was probably a pen name for Millee Taggart or someone else. Most likely a scab writer who wrote during the strike. That happened with Don Chastain on SFT and Donna Swajeski on AW. P&G probably rewarded writers who stepped in during the strike and were also punishing those writers who went on strike.
  8. I'm sure that by 75, Somerset was losing affiliates all over the country, not only moving the show away from 4pm but also not showing it all. New York is the top market so that would definitely affect the ratings. I recall that when NY moved Guiding Light to the mornings it had an immediate effect on the numbers.
  9. They had a perfect opportunity to add some conflict when Phyllis went on her rampage. Make Jack a little suspicious of Tara and have the two of them team up to discredit her, while Nick is against Phyllis interfering. Instead he just stood around meekly agreeing while Phyllis was like Godzilla destroying Tokyo.
  10. That was my criticism at the time. There was no background to the affair. It was a cop out to me. They went from A- E and left out the steps in between.
  11. Cool find! Boy that was a slog and I was just skimming. It must have had a released on the back of Magnum, The pilot was aired 10-11pm Sat night so they obviously added extra footage to pad out the running time. JLB got to go on location (it was supposed to be Cosat Rica)and had quite a big part. Funny that she was so magnetic on Y&R but didn't make much of an impression her IMO. Just proves, like so many other 'soapers' that success in daytime doesn't always translate.
  12. Maybe Lorie was just offscreen for a couple of weeks or Jamie pretaped some scenes. I guess it depends on how heavily she was featured in the pilot. It may have only been a few days and she could fit it around her Y&R taping schedule. Although it aired in March 79, it may have been a leftover from the previous season. I'll do some checking to see. EDIT It was in contention for the 79/80 season.
  13. March 79 Pat Falken Smith and her ETC Productions filed a breach of contract lawsuit against Columbia Pictures.Other defendants included Ann Marcus, William J Bell and Betty Corday. I wonder what the details were? Did it involve Marcus using some of PFS story ideas? What was the outcome of this? PFS returned in 81 but then left abruptly, with an old lawsuit being cited as the reason. All very interesting and intriguing...
  14. Just came across a CBS pilot 'Boston and Kilbride', one of several pilots Tom Selleck was cast in before making it with Magnum. Included in the cast was Jaime Lyn Bauer (as a pilot!) So Lorie and Jed were re-united! The show aired in March 79, so maybe one of the temp replacements was because Jaime needed time off to film the show.
  15. As The World Turns Jim Kerr himself WPIX DJ cameo appearance June 1979
  16. Do posters think that Tina Sloan would have made a good Alice? I saw her in some scenes as Olivia on AW up against Vana and she was much livelier and easier to watch.
  17. That was the story that brought Ma Henderson to town? It always seemed odd to me that that character was brought on (never to be mentioned again) Liz always presented as an 'elderly' character, although she was only 44 in 1973. What 44 year old looks like that nowadays? Of course she was supposed to present as careworn. However Dorothy Green (Jennifer) was 53 and presented much more 'with it' to use a 70's term. Although I always found her overly tanned and blonded looks a little harsh.
  18. The headwriter change was probably the reason for the upswing in stories. According to Jason 47: The first half of 92 was Richard Allen/Beth Milstein following on from Gene Palumbo. Sheri Anderson came in mid 92,later joined by Reilly who went solo in 93.
  19. Thanks for the info re Jane. I wonder if that story was a writers strike effort, in that by focusing on Sally's past and bringing in those characters they could keep going without altering Bill Bell's template for the main characters? In a May 79 Variety article CBS daytime changes were discussed. Mike Ogiens vp daytime announced expansion of Y&R due to loss of MASH reruns in daytime and suffering in not programming at 1pm. The new lineup noon Local 12.30 - 1.30 Y&R 1.30 - 2.30 ATWT 2.30 - 3.30 GL 3.30 - 4 SFT 4 - 4.30 LOL They obviously rethought that schedule. So as far back as May 79 Y&R was preparing for the expansion. I had always thought it was much later and Bell/Alden/Conboy were under the gun to deal with the changes.
  20. I'm drawing a blank on Jane Wilcox,Can you fill me in? Thanks. Variety reports in July 79 that Kathleen Engel, formerly of CBS press department is joining Y&R as a writer. Her only IMDB credit is a writer on Texas. I wonder how long she was there? She joins a select group of writers in the 70's.
  21. Variety May 79 Fred Silverman, presiding over NBC at the time announced changes to the daytime schedule in an attempt to arrest failing ratings. His plan 10 - 11.30 Gameshows 11.30 - 12.30 The Doctors (expanded to 1 hr) 12.30 - 1pm New soap 1 - 2.30 Days (expanded to 90 min) 2.30 - 4 AW Silverman noted this could be up and running by early 1980. Can you imagine a 90 min Days with a new soap as lead-in??
  22. Ina May 79 Variety article CBS daytime changes were discussed. Mike Ogiens vp daytime announced expansion of Y&R due to loss of MASH reruns in daytime and suffering in not programming at 1pm. The new lineup noon Local 12.30 - 1.30 Y&R 1.30 - 2.30 ATWT 2.30 - 3,30 GL 3.30 - 4 SFT 4 - 4.30 LOL So Search was originally scheduled for 3.30. Wonder if that would have made any difference?
  23. The Bare Essence miniseries (2 part) aired on CBS in Wk2 of the season as counter programming to baseball. This was a strategy CBS used regularly to provide female friendly alternatives to sport and also delay the debut of new and returning shows so they wouldn't get lost up against all the new shows and World Series. It rated well, so someone had the idea of spinning off a series and NBC picked it up. Several of the cast were not available or interested in committing to a weekly series so those roles were recast. NBC scheduled it for Tuesday at 9 following The A Team which proved to be a hit from the get go. Bare Essence failed to follow through. It's debut 2 hr episode scored a 15.0/23. The A team had a 20.6/31. BE was third in its timeslot and as the A Team kept building, BE kept dropping. So NBC moved Remington Steele from Friday at 10 and Bare Essence went there up against Falcon Crest, which had a hold on the soap audience. NBC was obviously just burning it off there. Remington scored better than Bare Essence so the move worked for NBC trying to win Tuesday nights. Soaps @ 9pm had never worked .If NBC had put Remington at 9 and Bare Essence at 10 it may have stood a chance.
  24. The death of Mary Matthews probably didn't meet with a lot of resistance from P&G due to the fact that Lemay/Rauch were bringing in the ratings-revenue and that was always their bottom line. Although Mary was an original and much loved character, she wasn't driving story and scoring in the fan polls. Also, this was at a time where P&G were dropping older characters. Patricia Bruder on ATWT, Teri Keane on EON, Ellen Demming on TGL (mmm...all women coincidentally) so it wasn't as though this was a one off for them. Dwyer was probably earning quite a lot as an original cast member so money would be saved dropping her. They were spending quite a bit extra with the expansion to 60 min.
