  2. I was not aware of Dinah Shore talk show. Thank you. So the main 1970s talk shows were Merv Griffin, Mike Douglas, Donahue, Dinah Shore. Dinah Shore ended in 1980, Mike Douglas ended in 1981, Merv Griffin ended in 1986, and Donahue ended in 1996. Oddly enough, Merv Griffin last episode was Friday September 5, 1986 and the following Monday (September 8, 1986) Oprah went national.
  3. I noticed ABC had no pre-emptions in February for Innsbruck Winter Olympics and CBS had no pre-emptions in April and May for NBA playoffs. We might see ABC pre-emptions in July for Montreal Summer Olympics and CBS pre-emptions in September for US Open tennis.
  4. They all passed relatively close to each other: William Roerick in November 1995. Larry Gates in December 1996. Vince Williams in January 1997.
  5. With Bad Boys: Ride or Die a week away, I was reminded of the first Bad Boys soundtrack
  6. B&B has been a lost cause for the last 20-25 years. We all know Bradley did not inherit his father's talent. If we're keeping it real here, it should have ended with Susan Flannery retirement.
  7. 2 anniversaries this month: Bryton James 20th and Joshua Morrow 30th.
  8. 1976 recaps in this thread starting on page 18
  9. I don't blame Tonya Lee Williams for not wanting to come back to Y&R after the way she was unceremoniously dumped in 2005.
  10. I am getting a Summer 1984 vibe from this
  11. I remember you once said you liked the modern-day western era more than the corporate and glamorous era. Even though Dallas was a family/business conflict-based show, it had the heart and roots of a western.
  12. Not to derail the thread, but what were the big talk shows pre-Oprah? Merv Griffin, Mike Douglas, Donahue, Hour Magazine, Sally Jessy Raphael are main ones I can think of.
  13. Dallas got more glamorous in 1984/85 in an attempt to compete w/ Dynasty. Miss Ellie was not meant to be a glamorous character even though she was a wealthy matriarch. Her roots were that of a rancher's daughter and that was reflected in her original styling.
  14. Hahaha, love this!
  15. Do you think recasting Miss Ellie played a part in Dallas losing #1 in 1984/85? Barbara Bel Geddes health issues are documented (heart condition and death from lung cancer) but I wonder if her 1984 departure might have been a contract negotiation that went wrong. Her 1990 departure was reported as retirement due to health, but I say salary dump. Yes, Barbara didn't act again after 1990 but if we go by the timeline of her final Dallas episode she lived another 15 years.
  16. @Paul Raven January 1976, Ryan's Hope was only 6 months into its run.
  17. @JAS0N47 Thank you for the additional information re 1977.
  18. Wow, Y&R at #1 and its not even three years into its run. I wonder if this was Y&R's first #1 week. So far in this thread 1977-1979 ratings are complete IIRC. How the network schedules (ET) were in January 1976, starting w/ soaps until the end of the day. CBS: 11:30 am Love of Life, Noon Y&R, 12:30 pm Search for Tomorrow, 1 pm Local programming, 1:30 pm As the World Turns, 2:30 pm Guiding Light, 3 pm All in the Family reruns, 3:30 pm Match Game, 4 pm Tattletales ABC: 12:30 pm All My Children, 1 pm Ryan's Hope, 1:30 pm Rhyme and Reason, 2 pm $10000 Pyramid, 2:30 pm The Neighbors, 3 pm General Hospital, 3:30 pm One Life to Live, 4 pm The Edge of Night NBC: 1:30 pm Days, 2:30 pm The Doctors, 3 pm Another World, 4 pm Somerset The soap time slot rivalries were Search for Tomorrow vs. All My Children As the World Turns vs. Days Guiding Light vs. The Doctors General Hospital/One Life to Live vs. Another World The Edge of Night vs. Somerset
  19. From what's been posted online over the years, the P&G shows were a real mess behind the scenes from the aftermath of OJ until their end. Perhaps the issues started way earlier than that, going back to the late 1970s and early 1980s w/ ABC's huge rise and dominance shaking up both CBS and P&G. In my life the two big shake ups in daytime were ABC's huge rise and dominance 1978-1982 and Reilly Days 1993-1997.
  20. 2005. From what I remember they hung out a few times but nothing came of it.
  21. Knots Landing tanked for me in the aftermath of Val's babies. Empire Valley became a mess, and Joshua's descent into madness and eventual death was difficult to watch. Knots Landing went off the rails for me in the aftermath of Laura's death. The rest of season 9 wasn't very good (Charles Scott, Johnny Rourke, Jill's descent into madness) and the final five seasons were a chore to get through (for me a lot of it was due to Paige practically eating the show). Knots Landing was effectively over when Abby departed. In the grand scheme of things, Donna Mills was smart to walk away when she did.
  22. The Long and Winding Road was the peak of Knots Landing and it was Knots Landing only episode to finish #1.
  23. Perhaps due to the numerous regime changes and the new regimes wanting to put their own spin on the show.
  24. Thanks for the link @soapfan770 Murder, She Wrote was a show I took for granted as a kid/teen but its a show I appreciate so much more as an adult. Even though it's been almost 40 years since the show began, it doesn't feel outdated and there's still that feeling of comfort and warmth when watching it.
  25. I watched the first episode of Passions to see what it was going to be like and my reaction was "this show is made for the kids and its done in three months". NBC kept it for 8 years.
