Wendy is absolutely right. That's most certainly Frank Runyeon & Christopher Norris and Paul Johannson in those promos. Notice they didn't have any of the 4 speak.......

ANNOUNCEMENT- 'RETURN TO SANTA BARBARA' is BACK in JANUARY!!!!
He's doing better, thanks. He still doesn't have a full apetite, he's a bit slow-moving, and has less energy. But it's just how the surgery kinda wipes the body out. To me, he's MUCH stronger than he was when he went in and that's the important thing. I think he's gonna come through this just fine and will be a better man for it. He's already doing his best to be.

ANNOUNCEMENT- 'RETURN TO SANTA BARBARA' is BACK in JANUARY!!!!
Yes. Unfortunately, as this was being planned, my father was taken to the ER and ended up spending 6 weeks in the hospital, which ended with him having a major surgery called a "Whipple." He was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer Stage 2, but luckily, it was all encapsulated in the tumor, which was removed, along with half of his insides. He's just come home and it being just he, my mom, and I living here, it's been A LOT of work for me and has taken up much of my time. He is recovering and within the next 3 weeks, he should be A LOT better than he is now and should be more self-sufficient. In any event, all of your prayers would be appreciated! As for 'RTSB', while it's been on hold, that hold will soon be ending. I plan on a re-start towards the end of May/early June. I will pick up right from where I left off. It may start out with only a few episodes a week instead of 5, but it will still continue. As soon as I'm positive of the return date, I will make the announcement. It's been so long and had so many false starts I wouldn't blame you if you were sick of me and felt like ditching me and the blog altogether. Thank you all so much for your continued interest, as that is what inspires me to write. So sorry it took me so long to get back to you but as you can see now, I've had my hands quite full. Looking forward to the continuation and you all posting your thoughts. When I announce the date, I plan to do a fun little exercise that will get you all involved again before the show gets going that I think everyone will enjoy. Until we meet again (aka, sooner than later), Greg

I know how you feel. I grew up on AW and there's something about that show and those characters that.......they became like real friends. Not just family, because that's a hand you're dealt, but friends because you chose them. Who wouldn't LOVE to live in a town and interact with people like Rachel, Felicia, Cass, Donna, Ada, Mac, Iris, Vicky, Jake, Paulina, Marley. Lila, Kathleen, Cecile, Frankie, Larry, Clarice, Sally, Catlin, MJ, Cheryl, Amanda, Mitch, Michael, and so many other rich characters we met over the years? And watching AW, there was a chance that any of them could return at any given moment, unless they were truly dead. AW was one of the few soaps where if a character was dead, they were dead, with Kathleen (and later Jake) being the rare exceptions. Whereas I feel I'm at home when the Horton Christmas Tree is trimmed, I felt I was with my friends, who I dearly miss, on Another World. I'd buy it in a second! I've been DYING to watch the major (and not so major) moments of this storyline my entire life. Do you hear us there, ROGER NEWCOMB?!? I have a feeling Rachel/Steve/Alice would be their best selling release ever and the 1st to become a collectors' item.

Since there's been much talk of her in another thread, does anyone know what Maura West has been up to since leaving Y&R? I'm dying to see her pop up on another show, daytime or otherwise.

I did not like the split personality storyline, but I did enjoy the half that the Dobsons wrote of it. The ONLY problem I had with their writing was having Marcy come back (after Eden's "death") as painter Suzanne, wearing only a brown wig and glasses as a disguise. It was CLEARLY just Eden with brown hair, yet none of the characters that encountered her even remotely recognized her, including the usually-smart Cruz & Sophia, her own mother. I DID like the climax with her shooting Sophia, but it definitely hurt that we never got a glimpse of the real Eden at the end and knowing she was fleeing with her DID still completely intact, with not even a hint she'd be getting help. I'd rather they'd have caught her and sent her to a mental hospital at that point, since we'd know she'd be getting help and the audience knew that Eden would never want Cruz to see her like that and therefore, she believably wouldn't want him there as a part of her recovery. The divorce would have seemed much more unselfish had that happen. While that glimpse in the window didn't really solve all that, it did give Marcy and her fans one last glimpse of Eden as Eden. It was probably the best they could do at the time with her already filming 'Palace Guard' and I'm grateful to the Dobsons and Marcy for giving us the little nugget they could. The Dobsons later said that they didn't start the story and were stuck with it when they arrived. The ONLY reason they finished it out was because it was mid-stream and they wanted it to make sense for the character and the history they built. Tying the climax to the very first major storyline the show ever had (Sophia's shooting of Channing) was brilliant and pretty much the only way to salvage the story they were handed. BUT, had they come back earlier, they said it never would have been written and NO WAY would they have written Marcy and Eden off like that.

It may have actually been before the divorce papers- I was just saying Marcy had one final appearance. But the stuff with stand-in Eden leading the Capwells to Ted was after the divorce,I'm pretty sure.

They were actually trying to track down Eden IIRC, but she was actually just leading them to Ted.

It's SO true. Even Marley was complex, at least under Ellen Wheeler (both stints) and Anne Heche. Hell, Jensen even managed to make her interesting at times and clearly made a better Marley than Vicky. It's too bad Heche's film career was getting red hot at the time because I'd have rather Vicky suffered from the burns and had Heche then resume the role. The sendoff with Jake would have been SO. MUCH. BETTER!

Ahhh, you must have missed the episode where Cruz first finds Suzanne Collier. Toward the end of the episode, Eden's face appears in the window and, as she looks at them, you can see her mouthing the words "Good Bye Cruz. I Love You." Tears rolled down her face as she took off her wedding ring and left it on the window and ran off, with Cruz soon finding the ring and trying to catch up with her. It was an uncredited final appearance- not ONE spoiler was leaked about it so I'm glad I got to see it with my own eyes. And yes, it most certainly was Marcy, as she returned to film that brief scene. It was the only, tiny bit of closure we got and THANK GOD her actual final scene turned out to be her playing Eden, not Lisa or Channing. I believe it aired about a month after Marcy left. Also, when Julia and Mason went to find Ted in San Francisco, it was Eden leading them to him. You could only see the back of her and that gorgeous hair, but it was most certainly Eden (not Marcy though ) and it actually played a major part in Ted's return.

Sunset Beach Discussion Thread
I remember that. Funnily enough, one of the things I truly loved about Sunset Beach is they often referenced Santa Barbara, especially Capwell Enterprises. Too bad Cruz & Eden couldn't have had their proper send off on SUN since SB never gave them one. It's HILARIOUS to me that you (and probably many people) find this promo shot risque when back then, it was par for the course on the soaps and probably tame compared to some of the raunchy sex scenes happening on other shows. AMC's Alec & Arlene, B&B's Ridge & Brooke and Ridge & Taylor, OLTL's Max & Blair, and Y&R's Brad & Lauren come to mind. Not to mention that this was pretty much the ENTIRE way SUN was promoted in its first couple years. Oh and Dax Griffin's Tim Truman......Droooool.....

God, I have to admit that I am IN LOVE with the fact that someone else not only shares my view on it, but articulates it so much like I would (EXCEPT, of course, the Evans/Eplin chemistry- I'll take the fireworks with Timmins over the labored spark with Evans any day). Going from Cali Timmins to Judi Evans was a HUGE MISTAKE, especially at the same time we were losing Anne Heche for Jensen Puke-hanan and Julie Osburn altogether. Thank GOD they still had Alicia Coppola at that time because without her Lorna, there wouldn't have been anyone in that age group to truly root for. Love her as an actress or not, Cali Timmins & Paulina were one of those rare perfect matches of actress and character. Judi Evans was just so forced from start and though they claimed they wouldn't do it, they completely changed the character to fit her acting style. It just didn't work. Sadly, I don't think TPTB ever truly realized what a gem they had in Timmins and how interesting she truly made the character. Can you imagine the Vicky/Grant/Paulina triangle with TIMMINS as PAULINA? Jensen may have actually found her footing as Vicky had she not been playing against such a milquetoast character played by an actress with more chops (albeit miscast ones). SUCH a shame, and that's why Alicia Coppola was the last HUGE loss of that generation of characters. It's unfortunate that my first rendezvous with Robin Christopher was as Lorna because I do believe she's an above average actress now BUT.........it's almost hurtful to see what she had in her later on in her career and realize she brought NONE of that to the character of Lorna. It's almost insulting in a way. And I must say, this thread has LONG been my favorite read on the board and it's just TO DIE FOR when I pop in and get to dive into 4 pages like you guys just posted in here. It just KILLS me that I'll probably never get to see the stories of late 60s-late 70s Another World that my mother raved to me about when I was a little boy. Please, all of you, keep up with the reminscing and BRAVO to all the in-depth analysis each and every one of you bring to your posts in this thread. I've long thought of AW as a thinking man's soap, as, IMO, the best part about it was what each character had boiling underneath their surface and how the actors imbued that into the scenes. IMO, Julie Osburn, Anne Heche, Cali Timmins, Alicia Coppola, and finally Lisa Peluso (who was brought on WAY too late, but JFP's best move as EP by FAR) were the last "newly" hired actresses to do that. By the end, Vicky Wyndham had gone so far over the top with the haughty accent and Felicia was written as fan fic that pretty much only Lisa Peluso and the divine Ms. Anna Stuart still had the ability (and writing) to do so.

Actually, Brainard's Ted had quite a bit of humor throughout his run, first with Suzanne and Lily, then with Angela. I found him to be quite an enjoyable character all-around and liked him just as much as Todd McKee. Yes, his Ted was quite different from Todd's but for me, it worked.

That could have been Angela Raymond who they considered Hutchinson for. She was introduced around that time. Or maybe a recast for Flame? I think Roberta Bizeau left around this time and we got stuck with that Marguerite person for a couple months.

Agreed on Lyhn Clark vs Paula Irvine and Lily's evangelistic past not working because Irvine looked so youthful and frankly, didn't play Lily that way. And OF COURSE I agree with you on Ric vs. Rafe- there IS no comparison! So was there a rewrite that said that Ric wasn't really a Castillo or that he wasn't superior? Because I don't remember him being revealed to not be a Castillo at all. Also, I have a question that some may be able to help out with: In this age of youtube and tape trading and the fact that a lot of what we see on the sites now is what aired in foreign countries, does anyone know for sure some of the things that aired in foreign countries that were different here? I know about the Terry Lester/Gordon Thomson switch, but the specific scene I'm wondering about is the pin prick to CC's "corpse"- I've always remembered it being Keith who did that and have seen it that way on youtube now. But in Marlena delaCroix's SB: A Spot Like Camelot article, she recalls a distinct memory of it being Gina who pricked CC with the pin. Is this just an error on her part or did it air as Gina doing it in the US and Keith doing it in other countries? I WILL say that deLaCroix's article had other mistakes (like the Dobsons returning to SB in 1990 when it wasn't til '91 and saying they were locked out of the studio in November '87 when I'm pretty sure it was early '88 when that happened, etc...)

As The World Turns Discussion Thread
I hadn't watched either, but I have more of an affinity for the ATWT set, I just poured through those discs and watched every episode, while I admit to getting bored with GL. And of course ya'll know I'm not buying the Kim Zimmer set, but that's the first one I didn't want. I definitely want the CarJack set, though I wish it was a Maura West/Carly set instead. I would have loved to have seen a couple episodes from her initial run and continue through her major moments until the end. And it still could have included the MAJOR CarJack stuff. Perhaps we're getting a Maura West addendum, like we did for the original ATWT and GL sets? Hint, hint Roger... But I'm not complaining at all. I'm grateful we're even getting this stuff at all and I can only hope that some of the other classic soaps will follow suit and start doing these DVDs, which should have happened YEARS ago! It sure is! Thank you SO much for this! Though I did watch intermittently in the 90s (mainly Maura West's first run), I really became a fan of ATWT in the 2000s and it surpassed Y&R and DAYS as MY soap (though I have more history with DAYS, I admit that I was far more hooked on ATWT/Y&R in the 2000s until Y&R fell apart and I started watching DAYS more again). This has been a real treat though, getting to watch all this stuff for the 1st time, since I was an NBC fan in the good ol days. AMEN! Agreed on Bryce and while I enjoyed Block's Craig (he was like a mix of SB's Mason and Keith), I think I enjoyed Carly's storyline with Lindstrom's Craig far more. Never thought I'd say that. As an aside, I can't believe that in one decade of ATWT fanhood, I sat through 4 Craigs! Obviously I favored Bryce because I realllllly liked his Craig when I tuned in the 90s, but I HATED how he was written and the characters he was played with. Hell, I resented it, so I can't even begin to imagine how the longtime ATWT fans felt about it.

It wasn't the first I bought, but I did buy it. And I'm so sad that in one of my many moves over the years, I somehow parted ways with it. Luckily enough, a fan recently sent me most of the SB-related stuff from that issue via the internet, though I KNOW there was more I don't have. I'd love to buy it off any of you or even pay one of you to color copy the SB pages for me and send them to me. I miss having it SO MUCH. Hmm...I'd say Gina but I just don't think she was used enough during Long's stint to say that she was written well. Not to mention that she was isolated from the Capwells, which was probably largely due to Brandon being off the canvas, a HUGE mistake since he was the source of most of the conflict for she and them. As far I think I'd have to go with CC & Sophia- while Ken/Sophia wasn't by any means my favorite storyline for them, I do think they were building something with Ken & Andie that was meant to go on much longer. Many of the CC & Sophia fanbase have expressed disappointment to me that she didn't get to fully flesh out & finish it because CC was going to be the hero for Sophia for the first time. Plus, for once in the character's tenure on the show, I do believe that storyline was going to give him the opportunity to earn back Sophia's love, redeem himself in her eyes (and the fans'), and actually be the man that was worthy of her. And CC distracting himself with younger Angela after Sophia had taken up with younger Ken was just the kind of tit for tat that he would pull, even though it was hypocritical of him since he'd taken up with MANY younger women over the years. I do have to point out, however, that Long didn't quite last a year. Her material began airing in the spring of '92 and SB was off the air in January '93. Frankly, I still don't understand why the Dobsons didn't pull a Larry David and return to write the final weeks of the show. Maybe it hurt too much, who knows their reason, but their ending is the only ending I think that the fans would have wanted. Ugh, I hate talking about this because it makes me angry, sad, disgusted, confused, and just downright emotional all over again. SB was my soap and it left a shell of its former self, which it didn't have to. To end my post on a positive note, I totally agree with you there. I really liked Lisa, I often forget that she was a Long creation, and of all of Long's influx of new characters, Lisa was the one that actually fit SB. Plus, she was meant to be a very young character, which was always SB's weak spot.

FUN FACT: I think SOW kinda sorta realized and admitted their blunder with ED because the SOW Santa Barbara tribute Issue has Carrington on the cover (pictured with Roscoe Born). Of course, Cruz & Eden were the centerpiece, Lionel & Augusta were on it, Warren & Angela (!- I'm shocked it wasn't a BJ picture), CC & Sophia, and The Walker family, so there were a lot of old characters on there. But you'd have to be more than a little insulted if you were on the show til the end and the actress you replaced gets the cover of the tribute issue. Not so fun fact: The same week that issue came out, JFP killed Maureen off 'Guiding Light.'

Though the Dobsons created the character, Rauch was instrumental in her hiring as well. The funny thing is that she was hired at the same time as John Beck (David Raymond) and Terri Garber (Suzanne Collier). Beck & Garber were the ones being heavily promoted in the soap rags, but Arvesen was the only one who's character worked and she took off. That said, she was written for by Long (the Ted/Angela pairing DID happen under their watch) but she wasn't driving story like she was under the Dobsons. That said, Nina herself recently told me that, had NBC continued SB, she'd have re-signed her contract when it came up for renewal (which I believe would have been in the summer of '93) Oh yes. They had BIG plans for Jodie & Cruz, but that would have been just as bad, if not worse, than his pairing with ED's Kelly. I've said it before and I'll say it again- if they were going to pair him with Kelly, the only chance it had of working was with CG (or Robin Wright but that wasn't ever gonna happen) in the role. And the ONLY character that and actress on the canvas that it would have worked with and made sense with was Julia. NLG & A Martinez always had chemistry to spare and if Marcy Walker were ever to return (had SB survived), the ensuing Eden/Cruz/Julia story would have written itself. And it would have tugged at the heartstrings of the audience. You didn't block it out, though you're right about ED's Kelly and JW's Warren (well, actually, he was fine initially with the Mason rivalry and Angela pairing, but Sydney Penny's BJ realllly dragged him down). Oh and Carl- you're not imagining things either. It was speculated and hinted in the press that the show was gonna do a Warren/Kelly pairing, but that was before Carrington Garland, Louise Sorel, and Shell Danielson were fired. It wouldn't have worked with Eileen Davidson and without Augusta. Plus, since they had to give ED a principal role to get her, I have a feeling that pairing her with A Martinez was discussed as well. By the way Wendy, I'm SO with you on that ED interview in SOW- do you have it still? I'd love to read it again. As for her IQ comment, much as I hated her, she didn't originate it. The soap press had a field day with her hiring and both SOD & Michael Logan's TV Guide column made the exact same statements before Davidson even aired. The thing about Davidson's Kelly was that, not only did she not have any romantic chemistry with her leading men, but she didn't have any chemistry with ANYONE on the show. It was almost like Kelly wasn't even a Capwell anymore because she just didn't fit with Judith McConnell, Jed Allan, or Gordon Thomson. Michael Brainard was fine with all of them (except Davidson of course). Plus, she didn't even click with Nancy Grahn in the few scenes they shared. The ONLY character and actor she had an ounce of chemistry with was Forry Smith's Reese Walker (the only interesting one in that clan) but the show never went there. And again, I'm with you that in the end, Carrington Garland (and her fans) got the last laugh. ED was a total flop in the role and she, Rauch, the Dobsons, and the soap press all had egg on their faces after the horrible way they all treated her.

You're right about both, especially Sunny! She was my favorite character on SFT and one of my all-time faves in fact. Marcia McCabe is love. She and David Forsyth's Hogan were paired at one time and it was quite popular, until a new regime took over and felt that Hogan should start up a hot affair with Liza Sentell (Sherry Mathis). Now I liked Liza too (when Sherry played her) but she had no chemistry whatsoever with Hogan and was well-liked with Travis. But the real travesty was that Hogan ended up with Patty, who was a young child in 1951, and brought back in her early 20s in 1986. I believe most viewers hoped that Hogan/Sunny would start up again when the Liza thing was thankfully killed, but no such luck. And Sunny's love interest, Bella I believe was his name, was like watching her prance around town with her gay best friend, not her hot foreign lover. It was silly and insulting.

I'm too tired to get started on it Carl so I'll go into more detail later. I really liked her with Warren and the Dobsons were poising her to be a new, different leading lady on SB and it would have worked. On comes Pam Long and the character/relationship with Warren was destroyed. Long did everything she could to make Angela look like a bitch or a fool, but Arvesen is in a class of her own and certainly kept her dignity. Her best pairing, however, was with Ted, which is who she SHOULD have ended up with. Those two had chemistry on par with A & Marcy, only it was a more overtly sexual chemistry, like B&B's Thorne & Brooke. But yes, Angela sadly ended up alone.

The Dobsons were still there with JFP. Dame Judith I'm pretty sure last aired in 1986. As much as everyone at the show loved & respected her,, they could never write full scenes with Minx because at that point, Dame Judith had trouble remembering her lines. They'd even leave little notes with her lines hidden around the set and that didn't always work either. Nicolas Coster often had to basically cover when she missed a line or feed her lines. But I do know that she forged a lovely friendship with Louise Sorel, who adored her. As for all the Nina Arvesen stuff appearing on youtube of late, it IS actually her posting it. I've struck up a friendship with her on facebook and she has granted me an interview that will be coming out in my 'RTSB' blog in a few weeks. Additionally, she has started reading the blog, loves it, and has given me many more recent photographs of her and permission to use them in the blog. She seems to be an absolutely lovely and personable woman, much like Brenda Epperson before her who I struck up a conversation with. Anyhow, I'll post some tidbits from the conversation tomorrow, as we talked for about 4 hours so there's plenty of stuff I've learned. I tried to get some juice out of her and did get some, but the interview is going to be much harder hitting with questions I think all of you will be interested in hearing the answers to. Incidentally, modest and humble as she is about it, it was actually the George Rawlins Murder/Paul & Cassandra Romance/Bermuda Triangle climax that shot Y&R to #1 and began it's reign as the #1 daytime soap for the past 23 years. People forget how fascinating that character really was and how much she did for Y&R at the time.
