Those are excellent ideas, but I bet CBS would be so scared of those types of stories. I wonder how the interference plays out on B&B. Brad obviously doesn’t just get carte blanche to do whatever he wants; even HBO showrunners get their ideas nixed by network executives, and Patrick Mulcahey spoke at length about stories and even dialogue that got killed at the network notes stage. B&B has more “excitement” than Y&R—he leans on cheeseball soap clichés that the network seems to like—but there are also long stretches where things just don’t go anywhere and we’re seeing the same sets (Steffy’s office at FC, the Forrester mansion, Hope and Liam’s cottage) and hearing the same cut-and-paste dialogue. Then, all of sudden, there’s a flurry of activity where it feels like he’s saved up enough money to do something bigger. B&B is a small show and is known for those kinds of patterns, but it feels particularly pronounced now.

I thought that was one of the most well-put, astute observations from a HW. Like that cut Ashley to the bone.

Exactly. I remember Mal (I think it was) who tried to make Devon into this debauched wealthy party boy, and it was SUCH a flop because it was so sanitized. Just three or four goofy-looking young adults in Devon’s apartment with drinks in their hands dancing to generic music pulled from a royalty-free library.

Which I feel is total unimaginative BS. And kinda suspect to be honest. There’s a wealth of ideas for a young character who comes into money, especially having to defend that wealth from bottom feeders (like Colin, Cane, Tucker, the list goes on). And does Victor not have goals or drive because he has all the money in the world? Even the BLM story, while timely and certainly relevant, sounds like SSM putting Devon in his “place.” She’s right that Devon needed a goal, but his wealth didn’t preclude that. That said, it’s hard on this show because they have to think super small. You can’t dramatize wealth that easily because you can’t show it. You watch a show like Succession and it’s so fleshed out and populated with so many small characters to show what a big company looks like. Soaps will never ever compete at that primetime level, but you don’t even have a secretary or extras at the once rarely seen Jabot or at Newman anymore.

Yep. I would call it “ambient,” but Stafford’s caterwauling breaks the spell. I can’t imagine many people clamoring for that HW job. Yeah, it’s remunerative but it’s demanding even under the best circumstances + you’re being micromanaged? Hell naw.

I found that really annoying to watch lol.
