Y&R: June 2025 Discussion Thread
A lot of the actors having been phoning it in. I can’t say I blame them. The material is so lame I can see why it’s hard for them to really dig into it and feel a connection to the storylines. I stopped watching Y&R for years with just occasionally tuning back in here and there but wasn’t watching consistently since maybe 2015. When I came back I asked myself.. what the hell happened? Even the vets like Peter Bergman, Eric Braeden, Eileen Davidson, Joshua Morrow, Sharon Case acting seems off. They are just completely uninterested and just saying lines instead of actually acting them. It’s sad but again, I don’t blame them.

DAYS: Y&R actor joins as recast
Why do I find this comical? Y&R doesn’t know how to cast male characters to save their life and yet Days is spot on with their casting. The swapping of actors both shows are doing is hilarious when you see how obvious the differences in the way it’s executed.

Pff knowing JG I’m sure Cane will be sniffing Phyllis’ panties before we know it. Phyllis is still being written like a 20-30 something romantic lead on the show so it wouldn’t surprise me one bit.

OMG that kiss in the beginning 😱🤣 I CRINGED SO HARDDDDD. I feel like the kiss was meant to be on the cheek on not the lips but perhaps the interviewer wasn’t understanding? Either way.. that interaction would keep me up at night for YEARS. Lmao. Since starting these GL episodes I can’t say Reva is a favourite of mine even though I acknowledge that her role is important in the show. I definitely get more matriarch vibes from Vanessa out of the 40 something crowd. She seems like she has more of that soft energy where I can see multiple characters going to her for advice, etc.

ALL: Your first soap watching memory
ED as Susan Banks at some point in the late 90s (DOOL) and thinking it was the most hysterical thing ever. Also Passions early years with Charity being frozen alive and little Timmy and Julian Wizard of Oz storyline, all of Theresa’s antics. Late 90’s/Early 2000’s NBC soaps is definitely where I started!

Interesting. So when would you guys say the show really started to decline in terms of quality and budget, etc? Because the 1999 episodes I’m watching now seem like they have a pretty good budget. There is a good variety of sets, very large cast. I was wondering just how small the cast ends up getting over the next few years because I can only assume there were some cast cuts and I’m sure there were less sets.   I watched it happen with Y&R more recently, and I wanna say post 2012 is when the smaller budget became more obvious on screen. There were some awful head writers around 2012 (ahem Maria Arena Bell) but the show still looked pretty good and the cast was massive. It was a shame because majority of the cast was being wasted around that time. I’ve always loved a big cast so I’m sad we no longer really have that. It seems like soaps now a days like to merge a lot of storylines together with a smaller cast and I absolutely hate it.

No worries 😜It can be confusing trying to explain soap operas families.. and since I started looking up the families on GL I’m actually shocked at how many generations of characters there is. It’s actually really cool that there is such a rich history but I know it’s going to take a LONG time to grasp.

Oh god I hate when they do that. I don’t have a problem with SORASing characters but when they make the character younger or older than they are supposed to be it just throws everything off. They just recast Cane on Y&R and made him 10 years younger. He has 2 young adult children and the actor is only 40. I have no idea how they’re going to address that.

Well Dylan isn’t on the show right now where I’m watching. The only parents I’ve seen of Susan’s is Jim and Harley. I knew Susan was put up for adoption as a baby and adopted by Jim and Connie but I didn’t know who the bio father was. The bio father has not yet been addressed until this particular episode and Reva explains to Susan that Dylan is her son. Who knows maybe it was addressed in earlier episodes I watched but it just went over my head at the time. The confusing thing about googling the family ties in soap operas tends to be when a characters true mother/father is changed at a later time so if I’m watching earlier episodes it may not make sense but I find it tends to be pretty accurate.

I’m watching more episodes tonight and there’s a scene with Harley/Susan and Reva/Cassie at the hospital and Harley is introducing Susan to her grandmother Reva. I’m sitting there wracking my brain trying to figure out how the heck Reva has any relation to Susan at all.. then I started doing some digging and realized OHH.. so Susan’s biological father is Reva’s son! lol.. that would have confused to absolute [!@#$%^&*] out of me if I was a new viewer in 1999. Google has really been my friend since starting this show lol

Sharon Case is my all time favourite actress who plays Sharon on Y&R. I also love Arianne Zucker (Nicole on Days). Those are two examples of female actresses who can break down on screen and make their emotions totally believable to the point I forget they’re even acting. I should also add Eileen Davidson onto that as well. I just love an actress that can give a solid & believable emotional scene without chewing the scenery and acting a fool in order to make it believable. This actress who plays Vanessa showcased that well for me I think!

I love that the show still plays on that history even a few years later and plays a big part in Matt and Vanessa’s relationship. Their relationship seems to be on the rocks right now in 1999 so I’m excited to see what comes next with them. I’m sure you’ll be caught up to me soon. I watch when I can but don’t always get a chance if I’m working and stuff. It’s still very much holding my interest so I am going to keep coming back to it I’m sure even if I don’t watch for a couple days. I also should add, the actress who plays Vanessa does emotional scenes very well. Any actress that can sell an emotional/crying scene and make it believable usually ends up being a favourite of mine. Not all actors can do those type of scenes well but she’s amazing at it. Agree 100%!

February 1-5th, 1999: The character of Vanessa did not stand out to me much at all during the beginning of 1999, probably because she wasn’t on much. The scenes that aired during this week was heart breaking though & to see her character feeling torn between Matt and Dinah was so real and heart wrenching. I saw comments saying “this made me hate Vanessa” but for me it was the opposite. The characters motivation to protect her daughter at all costs makes me find her character very likeable. I don’t know the backstory between Matt and Dinah but he clearly cannot stand her, he used some pretty harsh words against her which made me kind of side eye him. Yeah Dinah is crazy but even crazy people deserve their mother’s love. I know Hart & Dinah are coming to an end soon. I’m excited to see where Cassie ends up now that this story is wrapping up. There seems to be something going on with Holly at the mental hospital this week when she was being cut off from talking to her daughter Blake and it was starting to make me wonder if the mental hospital is up to something sinister. This mental hospital reminds me of Fairview on Y&R and even looks similar. I wonder if it’s the same set? Either way, I admit I did gasp when Holly smashed that pot over that lady’s head! Excited to see what happens next with her. Beth finds out about Harley and Phillip having a baby and she seems to be pretty accepting of it even though deep down she is still heart broken. It was nice to see the Beth and Phillip scenes because although I knew they were once I couple I haven’t actually seen them interact at all yet. It sure seems like there is still love there. The Annie drama I’ve saved for last because it’s probably the least exciting at the moment to watch. These are all strong actors, I just don’t particularly love this storyline. The only (kind of) interesting thing is the dynamic between Annie and Alan. It seems Annie has been denied bail and will remain in jail for now so the storyline is keeping me interested just ENOUGH to wanna see what happens next but it’s not exactly my favourite of all the other stories happening currently. I wonder if people disliked this Annie at first when she replaced Cynthia Watros?

It’s such a shame that the actors really do genuinely seem like they have chemistry. If he came in as a new character they might of really had something there.- Y&R: June 2025 Discussion Thread
JG sucks. I honestly feel he may be the absolute worst. As in worst than even MAB. That’s truly embarrassing.- Y&R: June 2025 Discussion Thread

So now that we know who Aristotle Dumas is, I guess the only question remaining now is who ends up getting killed? And I really can’t imagine a “whodunit” storyline for ANYONE other than Victor. He is really the only person who could be killed off and have literally anyone on the canvas be accused of his murder. Anyone else just wouldn’t make sense..- Y&R: June 2025 Discussion Thread
Oh I never thought they were on location. I was hoping it would be on location in the beginning but that was just me being naive. I just don’t get why Adam and Chelsea aren’t in the group scenes with all the other actors.- Y&R: June 2025 Spoilers
It’s pretty underwhelming. They set this whole thing up like we were supposed to be shocked at the last minute even though it’s been the most predictable thing all along. (It still makes absolutely no sense that Dumas is Cane) but it wasn’t exactly a mystery even from the beginning. I think JG is trying to capitalize on the fan base of Lane which was pretty popular at one point, but I don’t think it works today like it might of 15 years ago. Not to mention, it’s not even the same actor playing Cane.- Y&R: June 2025 Discussion Thread
Tomorrows U.S episode: It’s super odd that Adam and Chelsea aren’t in France with the rest of the cast. I wonder if it has anything to do with Mark Grossman’s two ex-girlfriends being there.- Y&R: June 2025 Discussion Thread
Thank god for classic GL and Days episodes I have recently stumbled on. It’s definitely itching that scratch that I need right now for soap watching! - Y&R: June 2025 Discussion Thread
