Late (er) in life coming out...which soap characters would be suitable?
My mind was too focused on gay men but now that you say it, you know who else I could buy it for? Alexis on GH. She has the same type of character profile as Holly and while I loved her with Julian, I feel that she is not that associated with enough straight romances in the public's mind that if she fell in love with a woman now, later in life, the audience would go on the journey with her. It fits the character and you know NLG would love it and sell the hell out of it.

Late (er) in life coming out...which soap characters would be suitable?
I have said all I had to say in the other thread about what I think of our minds immediately going to characters whose performer is gay, regardless of what the character is. Michael is an attempted rapist/sexual predator of women (and that's how Kevin started too). Quite the stretch to turn him gay. Personally, obviously, I would prefer it being told with a character who has either been hinted already to be sexually liberated (if RC hadn't leaned so much on the Leo joke, Xander could have been a good candidate) or where they dropped hints over the years. That'd be the way to do it; but that requires foresight. I also think it would be hard to pull off with a character that has had successful high-profile romances. It'd work better with a character whose most pairings have failed. I don't think DAYS Lucas is a good candidate and I am a Lumi fan but in a vacuum it would work for him: all his romantic pairings have failed and we could accept Sami as his great love being straight because they have a special bond - that when it was the Carrie/Austin quatuor felt almost like a gay guy and his girl best friend. On the shows currently, I think having Y&R Adam come out as bi and be written a proper gay romance next to his current straight pairings is the low-hanging fruit. Whatever one thinks of Adam it has been established that he has had gay sex. Never pulling that thread is a huge missed opportunity as, as I said, that kind of story works better when there has been hints along the way. EDIT: Looks like our minds match exactly. You wrote better the points I was busy rambling about at the same time.

DAYS: Makeup room photo chart reveals contract cast for some point in 2022
And it is accurate that it is pure speculation at this stage - the mere fact that this is immediately where the rumors go of course being its own tell. The PR quotes let me think this might be sadly right but who knows? I hope the teases are a fake-out knowing fan minds would go there and it is a different story altogether.

The only thing that is going to make me angrier than them writing this story for this actor is that it is going to devolve into dumb gay jokes and sexual innuendos past the first week. Just so that we can make the story as unhelpful for LGBT representationas possible. And I say that as someone who enjoys Leo for what he is.

General Hospital January 2022 Discussion Thread
That's one pretty massive unresolved thread that they have left dangling considerably longer than I expected. Probably longer than they expected too since wasn't the actress who played Esme only supposed to do six months when it was first announced she had been cast? Better be good although the recent track record of secret reveals on GH has been a letdown.

Soap opera suicides
Since we are counting suicide plots, I guess George Rawlins paying Adrian Hunter to kill him counts as a suicide, doesn't it? Also, didn't Y&R Ashley ever go there during her many nervous breakdowns? Feel if Traci did, I am surprised Ashley wouldn't have

I have always felt that way about Nikolas/Ava because he does look younger than he is but indeed in real life they are not that far apart I do believe on the show they do have a ten-year difference, just from how their characters stories play out and the average age of their previous romantic partners. Nikolas has a teenage son; Ava would have a grown woman as a daughter.

Well, don't stone me but that was kind the gist of the OLTL Daniel story, wasn't it? LOL Bold and Beautiful also did that story properly with Karen, as played with Joanna Johnson who came out of the real-life closet at the same time. See the pattern I was mentioning ? Anyway, yes, the story would be lovely to tell. Not with this character and not with an out gay actor as long as we only have, like, five of them on daytime.

Brothers Fighting Over a Girl
Ridge and Thorne over Caroline, yes. But also: Ridge and Thorne over Taylor. And Ridge and Thorne over Brooke. And Ridge and Nick over Brooke. And over at Y&R let's not forget at different times Nick and Adam and Dylan over Sharon.

100%. I am reacting to the idea now so if it does happen, I will have gone through the anger phase already I hope not and frankly, from the spoilers, it sounds like the more classic tale of "wife-thinks-husband-has-an-affair-but-actually-he-has-a-different-secret". But it is plausible enough that I believe it could happen and it makes me mad. And the regulars here will have noticed I don't get mad that often!

I feel one of the reasons you might feel that way is that Michael/Lauren has been stuck on below-neutral for ten years and none of the pairings Kevin have been in have ever worked. I hear that. But I stand against it on principle - it sends a terrible message. If ALL the gay men on daytime were out, and this would be a small sample, I'd unclench my buttcheeks and accept some creative leeways (and it could be fun in a vacuum for those characters and as Soapsuds said it does happen in real life). But when we have four or five and it has already been done once, it feels intentional and wrong to me. It vindicates EXACTLY why all these actors stay in the closet: because they are terrified of being typecast in that way. And I want more people to be out and comfortable and the audience getting to see them do all kinds of roles. In a world where sexuality is irrelevant to an actor's career and success, by all means, retcon away. Not in daytime in 2022, sad as it may be.

Sisters Fighting Over a Guy
I don't know. All the actors were fantastic and the characters compelling but I think one reason the merry-go-round first with Nathan in the fourth position then Malcolm leaves people more ambivalent than it deserves is because it often felt it was more about keeping the "Black Island" together away from the rest of the cast and being afraid of throwing these characters in a different direction. Vicki deciding her great love was the man who raped her sister - and said sister suddenly deciding her great love was the man who had raped her and that she hadn't see in years is a down I'd like to forget, admittedly.

This is one of the reasons I am reacting as vehemently about it. I definitely remember this and it makes it doubly offensive to "vindicate" this kind of gross thinking. Their love story was incredibly positive representation - for characters that were not particularly likeable. I have no objection to such a story being told. Pick any of the dozens of other straight men that have come through the show over the past thirty years to bring back and do that with. I have a strong objection to it being told for a character whose portrayer is, oh look at that what a coincidence, one of the few out gay men on daytime. Let's not be naive about why they'd go there with Craig who has not been around in years, of all people, if the rumor is true. It is because KS is gay. We have had VERY few out gay men on daytime and if they keep retconning their characters as gay, what message does that send? And the Philip storyline was offensive for a gazillion reasons more than just the gay thing, we agree there. But the fact Philip was all of sudden supposed to have been closeted when nothing had suggested as much was solely down to TB being gay. And I stand by my anger at it. Gay men can portray straight characters and not put in a box of only being able to play gay characters. And it is gross that when the number of out gay men on daytime is still fingers of one hand high, this would turn into a pattern.

This. It would be EXTREMELY offensive, the way rewriting Y&R Philip as gay with this extremely dumb retcon was offensive because it was coming out of Thom B. being gay in real life. And just the same way people insisting Y&R Kevin should be gay despite having never shown any hint to the contrary. The fact the actor is gay IRL should have NO bearing on the sexuality of the character and especially not retroactively. And that people are even suggesting it, other than to joke around, pisses me off. RC better not go there. Maybe she *thinks* so as an inside joke but it turns out to be something else. I'd accept that. But Craig is straight and any attempt to change that is not acceptable.

Soap opera suicides
Yeah it has been a topic of particular interest to me why there have been so very few. Here is the previous discussion on the topic: Storm is the one that comes to mind in the modern era. On primetime, Melrose Place's Craig (David Charvet's character) shot himself in his car which I remember being shocked about back then, even if the character was meh. Just felt like a brutal death because it was out of grief for Sydney (which makes the reboot retcon she was actually alive particularly galling) whereas other suicides (like Amanda's boss) tended to be from people who had done something bad.
