As The World Turns Discussion Thread
As a YouTube viewer, watching the Snyder clan grow, shift and mutate in the 80s is fascinating stuff, not the least of which because it appears to be a psychosexual playground for Marland on many levels, between Iva, Lily, Meg and the parade of beautiful, brooding or soulful men with quasi-incestuous relationships and homoerotic currents, some of them going into business or high society drag (like Meg and I guess Holden) or remaining rugged. The idea of a modular soap family like theirs, too, where multiple members can come and go and replace others when one is spent, is excellent. It makes me think about which soap could and should have crafted similar ones or retrofitted other old ones to suit the model.

I'll always find Rick hot and brilliant, no matter how bad his GH stories got. DAYS should've brought him back aeons ago. He talks about Beverlee McKinsey, who he says adored Chris Bernau. My first brush with Chris Bernau was in his role on Dark Shadows in SyFy reruns when I was a kid; he was always clearly talented, but I didn't fully appreciate him until I began to glimpse him as Alan on WOST years later. He was sexy and powerful, and a world apart from the blustering fool I'd always seen Ron Raines play.

Not surprised to see Adam Robitel's name in there - I knew he was an ex-Singerite. It's a shame since he made a good horror movie, The Taking of Deborah Logan, with Jill Larson. I also did work on Escape Room (in marketing, not in production; I don't know him at all). A lot of Singer's boys have done good work since, but I don't trust any of them.* (David Hayter of course is the voice of Solid Snake from my beloved Metal Gear Solid, but I'm pretty sure he's too old for Singer.) Meanwhile, in both racism and sexism news (remember Gabrielle Union?): * - that aside, it must be noted the article doesn't accuse Robitel of any wrongdoing. I just find any of Singer's former young pals suspect.

During their confrontation, Lucinda scoffs at the idea that Lily's adoption secret could've had anything to do with Martin's suicide - she blames it on McColl as though it's an entirely separate issue. I thought she came on blaming Whit McColl for ruining his business. It's Iva who suggests to her Martin could've had another reason. But you'd know better than me.- As The World Turns Discussion Thread
So I'm still having a blissful time bingeing '86, but uhhh, this was a lot! The fakeout on making people think Shannon is Lucinda’s phantom caller is pretty obvious - Ron Carlivati was doing only slightly less subtle ones a few years ago. I like to think I’d have guessed it was Iva, but I dunno as AFAIK there’s very little textual hints whatsoever that I know of beforehand that Lily was not Lucinda’s? At least not in the most of the three months I've seen. Just hints visually and in the blocking with Iva, Lily and Lucinda, or in her bonding with the Snyders. They do smack you in the face with it when Lily says the Snyders are like a real family to her, and Iva is literally tucking Lily into bed, but even then I don’t recall any discussion of Lily being adopted. I wonder if I’d have pieced the secret together from context clues but who knows, esp since they were just coming off the Sierra reveal. I feel privileged to finally get to see this - just watched the Friday cliffhanger where Lucinda walks into the bar to meet her tormentor. They've begun introducing a crop of new men like Casey Peretti, and I understand the Snyders I'm unfamiliar with like Seth come next. I wonder if they seriously intended Casey for Frannie, or Iva for Steve. They also namedrop Emily running away here, preparing us presumably for the great Melanie Smith.- Guiding Light Discussion Thread
They clearly intended to re-pair Ehlers and Goldin. Her character, Taylor Thompson, was brought onto AMC with great fanfare specifically for him as Jake Martin. Problem was AMC fans didn't respond to a forced pairing from another show, and the throwaway pairing of Jake and Chrishell Stause's Amanda became unexpectedly popular. Ehlers also made herself unsympathetic IRL by dissing the surprisingly charismatic military veteran hired to play a romantic spoiler for her and Jake; even "Brot" was more popular than her on the show. The show dumped her on Tad, then off without an exit. - Hollywood Sexual Harrasment/Assault Thread
