Y&R August 2023 Discussion Thread
I think both shows (and all of the shows really, even DAYS to an extent - B&B has not really changed in decades IMO) have that same fundamental terror at this point. They fear any true risks would alienate their last sliver of audience vs. trying to grow it again. But Y&R's problem is somewhat more profound to me because as you say they do bring on the new generation - but unlike GH, they just never materially use any of it. GH is caught between two poles but Y&R is in total paralysis to me.

Y&R August 2023 Discussion Thread
It's the same problem on every remaining soap but especially Y&R and GH. The veterans are not moved out of first position, ever, so you have a traffic jam of squandered generations below them getting older on the vine, and more pointless kids and babies all the time. That's not to say many of these veterans can't still have active and vital story - the age groups of 40-60 are not what they used to be in the '80s or '70s. But there's no attempt to really invest in much of the future generations at Y&R especially. With GH you have a mostly solid recent youth set getting story but too many kids below them, and too many of the wrong played-out people across a wide age range in the frontburner.

Millette Alexander's EON role has always fascinated me from reading up about it on the old EON fan site back in the day. I never saw any of her on GL until much long after. She was a stalwart presence. I don't know if Kevin Bacon has ever talked about her when referencing his time on the show (not that I've ever heard of him talk about it much at all) - didn't he play her ward?

Frank D. was very hot back in the day. By the time the 2000s or mid-2000s rolled around he was kind of dumpy and sad and was clearly kept around out of loyalty. The same could be said for Michael O'Leary, but amazingly MOL has had a bit of a glow-up recently (a la Michael E. Knight, who has grown out of what I termed his uber-depressed "Suicide Tad" years of the 2000s on AMC). He was a bit of a silver fox in, of all things, Halloween Ends, getting slaughtered by Michael Myers.

She cannot act! It cracks me up when I see (or saw, before the utter collapse of the app for non-users) people in the GH hashtag demanding 'story for Jordan'. Jordan is not an actor! Jordan has barely been a character since the beginning with poor Vinessa Antoine. She is a plot widget kludged into various boring scenarios and C-D tier romances. Do not pretend Jordan #3 is desperately in need of the right material or man to soar!

She and Nicholas Walker were also scorching hot (as were she and JdP, but it was different). I've always wanted to see NW's actual exit episodes - some of the online eps in fall '91 come very close to it, I think. I wanted to see how exactly they sent him out, and I wondered if he interacted at all with Susan Batten/Luna beforehand. I assume not. I know they picked up on the Lee Ann thing Rauch left them with a little bit just after James returned, but I don't know how long that lasted. Presumably not very long. Lee Ann incidentally is another character I thought you could've reintroduced for an arc at some point in the later years to give DG's Kevin and presumably Kelly some drama. But I also really just like Jason Webb a lot. Why they never seemed to commit to him in full with Dorian, with Lee Ann, with Marty I don't know.

I will have to dig through that. I wonder if they ever get into some of the BTS ups and downs of her second run, or if she was asked back. (The apparently true rumor that Gottlieb's regime considered recasting Gabrielle with someone like Eileen Davidson is wild.) Revisiting the Rauch era recently you get a real feel of just how relentless an engine of a character Gabrielle was, moreso at times than even Tina.

Say what you will about Prospect Park's magical one-way doors, I ain't never seen any German expressionism shít like that on the soaps.

E.J. Bonilla (Rafe, GL), who's gone on to have a solid career despite starting out having to change his wardrobe in the back seat of station wagons in freezing Peapack, is apparently in The Exorcist: Believer.

You mean like this? You might want to review how and why exactly that went down (the few undeleted posts over prior pages that are left addressing it, that is). I wish you luck finding the threads I got frozen though. The reason a large swath of the board's active posters have a certain user is blocked is not because of gatekeeping, it's because the threads are literally unreadable without it. I would wager that a near-majority of the forum's active posters have had her on Ignore for months if not a year or more, myself included. But that doesn't change the sheer tonnage of spam and thread derailment everywhere, and stuff we can't help but see because it still regularly shows up in the feed all the time. I hear about it constantly. You see it discussed constantly. It's not a question of contribution to active discussions, it's a question of ones being rendered impenetrable. And I think you see that nuance. Then there's the fact that it seems as though the user has had her account rendered dormant more than once. Maybe her many recurring exits are coincidental, but that's not the impression I've gotten. That would indicate some acknowledgement of an issue. But who knows. As for the question of moderation and whose responsibility it should be I'm not going to comment on that (it definitely shouldn't be mine). As it is though it's yours and so no one can change this but you. I just really don't think this is the first, second, tenth or last time you've heard about this issue. And it's just going to keep going until something changes that none of us can do any more about than we have already done.

Neighbours: Discussion Thread
All these trailers remind me of the rollout for the new AMC and OLTL ten years ago. It was just unreal to see the shows again in a new context for a new time. I know what the fans here must be feeling, but I think they probably have a much better shot at longevity. I've never, ever watched Neighbours except for I think some glimpses of it when I spent some extended time in Australia as a child. I'm curious about how this experiment goes as I think it's another window into a possible future for the genre (if anyone here cared), so I will be watching. And I can't reiterate how classy it is for Guy Pearce to come back not just for the past finale but for whatever they're going to do to handle his character on its return.

Oh, I saw. I'm very pleased. I have the old Criterion BBS boxset somewhere which includes Last Picture Show, but this is an update and moreso I'm pleased about Texasville. I saw the DC in color, but I guess B&W may have been Bogdanovich's later intention for it to match the first film. So I'm happy it's getting a proper release and has some features dedicated to it.
