  1. That ad makes me want a Mimi-stan thread, great character. I adore that they took a typical 70s bimbo type and gave her depth. Didn't Mimi have a mother at one time, a kind of pushy gal who wanted Mimi to pursue the golddigger life with Asa? Did she have any other family come to Llandview?
  2. I think it is Ruby Wright (Alexandra Neil aka Dianne Neil) and Mark Wheeler (as played by Michael Woods)
  3. RHOSLC - Was I the only one nervous when Meredith left her jewels in the dining table, and then her dog jumped up there? I was sure that dog would eat those jewels. I continue to be surprised that Brooks Marks is "exploring" his sexuality, but I guess they're being honest. Also, what is Whitney's relationship with Meredith now? They had lunch together with Heather and Mary, but they actually seem well suited as friends given their mutual interest in entrepreneurship. The Jen/Heather scene made me dizzy, it made no sense and Jen trying to spin her teenage-like behavior on twitter into a cultural issue was a mighty huge reach. Heather wants to be popular, Jen didn't need to try that hard to get her allegence. Finally, I thought Jenny's singing and her geeky kids were the funniest parts of the episode, but she seems like a poor fit to be friends with Jen and Lisa.
  4. Let's think about Will's script for a minute. First, how long is this movie if Marlena being possessed happens in the middle of the story? Second, how does it end? Sami's story does not have a complete arc, so does the movie end with her moving to LA or being kidnapped? Third, is Sami famous enough amongst the other citizens of Salem, given how often she must have been in the news, to justify being the central figure in a biopic?
  5. As well as Keith Timmons and Victoria Lane, everyone went to high school with Cruz, except Eden and Robert Barr
  6. It is an interesting idea. I can imagine further short term stories, like this one and the Last Blast story last year. Although, I wonder if both series were just meant to produce more interest for the new platforms. If NBC continues to broadcast the Olympics, it seems like a good time to produce these episodes. One does wonder about the contractual issues about whether or not actors, writers, and crew are being paid like a regular episode because they weren't filming regular episodes that week. But, thankfully those concerns are not part of my responsibility as a fan.
  7. How are the Daytime Emmys relevant to anything on a streaming service? The emmys are a PR tool for ongoing series, by the time the Daytime Emmys roll around Beyond Salem will be ten months old and in no need of additional PR. And if the question is about the people involved in the production receiving recognition, one doubts that anyone would include a daytime emmy win on their credits. Given the ratings for the Daytime Emmys, more people will probably read this thread than ever watch the award show, let alone remember who won.
  8. An oft repeated sentiment, but if Eileen had been cast as another character, perhaps a sibling of Madeline from Grant Capwell's side of the family tree, I think the fans might have accepted it a bit more. Until Eileen went to DAYS, she was stereotyped as a wealthy daughter, so it might have been more appealing to allow her to play against type, and then lure Cruz into a romance with someone who did not so closely resemble Eden as a character (I always felt the various writers failed to differentiate Kelly and Eden's personality in a significant way). However, Reese and Jody were so unpopular, and really changed the tone of the show. They were reflective of the de-glamorization of the soaps in the 1990's that was such a poor fit for SB. It felt like in response to the success that GH had in its reinvention in the 90's to be more grounded and tell more human-based melodrama, SB desperately wanted to keep up with the times when they shifted to Pam Long's style of storytelling. Yet, as a fan, I still wanted to see Sophia descend the stairway of the Capwell mansion in a gown for dinner, the Lockridges at the polo club, and Gina striving for money and success. By the time nu-Kelly came around, along with nu-Ted, there was so much less focus of Capwell Industries and the manor, even the lighting became more sepia toned and dark, it was not what I wanted.
  9. I think if you look at Bo, Marlena, and Jennifer on DAYS, or Vicky, Matthew, and Cass on AW, it was always possible for a popular member of a super couple to move on with a new love interest. However, in most of those cases, they moved on with a new character, in the context of a new storyline. Kelly was still helping Cruz get over Eden, they had never flirted in the past, and there was zero established motivation for them to hook up, except for the fact that they were both hot and single.
  10. Woulda, coulda shoulda, but I imagine that if A. left rather than Marcy there was Robert Barr to take up the reins, except that the Dobsons didn't create that character so they were not motivated to write for him. Going back to the money and recasts for a moment, a behind the scenes mismanagement story that I always recall about SB is that Terry Lester left because his agent called him to say that nobody in production had tried to renegotiate when his one year contract was set to expire. As a result, Terry just packed up on a Friday and never returned to set. One suspects that getting Gordan Thompson to start so quickly after Dynasty was cancelled cost a pretty penny. One can also suspect that Eileen Davidson (and later Kim Zimmer) didn't come cheap. So, despite the fact that they were loosing viewers 3:1 over GH, they were paying hefty fees to the actors with very little impact on the ratings. Coupled with the reportedly large payout the Dobsons received from their lawsuit undoubtedly soured New World on wanting to continue spending money on a sinking ship. Especially when most of their other projects were outside of daytime.
  11. She had a good contract with NBC for other primetime movies (according to IMDB after Palace Guard she starred in four NBC movies), so I think it was simply money. I recall when she was later hired at GL, there was press about how much she was paid, and one assumes that SB did not have the budget to make her an offer she couldn't refuse. Or, given all we now know about the mismanagement at SB, perhaps there wasn't enough money to make her want to go back.
  12. I would give them two possible, and logical, excuses for the mess of a story surrounding Eden's exit. 1. As recently discussed, SB had a 50/50 track record of recasting key roles, so they may have felt that by not killing off Eden, there was always a chance that they could recast in the future. 2. It was not unlikely that Marcy's primetime show would fail (which it did), and they may have held out hope that she would return. Either way, the writing was on the wall for a year that Marcy was leaving. And at the risk of repeating an oft said sentiment, Carrington Garland was well placed to take the thrown as the leading woman of SB, if they hadn't fired her in a lame attempt to get more ratings by hiring a "name" from another show. Getting back to the article about SB's ratings, it is clear that their constant stress over the failure to attract a larger audience was the major motivation for story and casting, rather than trying to please their already devoted fan bases, which wound up alienating the viewership.
  13. Don't forget Princes Richard and Edmund of Guiding Light. Or, try to forget them and preserve the good memories of GL. (lol) The daytime budget rarely allows for accurate context for royal stories. There's never enough staff, the palaces are usually just one room, and the jewels never look real. For example, think of the E! show The Royals, it was fun, but it looked like they lived in a mcmansion compared to Downton Abby.
  14. Having recently read the synopsis of that period, I don't think you should let them off the hook so easily. In the fall of 1990, Eden was shot and went into a coma, (presumably to allow Marcy time off). Then, she magically awakens for Christmas, and Robert Barr gifts her an emerald which causes her to have memory flashes. In January of 1991 the Dobsons return, and the dinner party marks their first official week of scripts. Eden has a brief flash during the dinner party, but nobody really notices. Then, in February, Marcy's departure is announced. Soon after the whole multiple personality story begins. Prior to that period, it looked like a story of how Eden and Robert were once thieves for thrills. It wasn't until the Dobsons return that the whole confusion about multiple personalities, and Eden's anger at Sophia, became a part of the plot. There may have been a story outline, but one tends to think, given the multiple interviews that Bridget gave about not watching the show while she was gone, that she probably did not feel beholden to the plans of prior writers.
  15. It is no surprise that as soon as the Dobsons returned in 1991, Mason (who has previously reconciled with CC) put him on trial at that famous dinner party and Eden has to shoot her mother and go mad in order to leave Santa Barbara. Because, no matter how old the Capwell kids got, or how much success they achieved, they were still defined by the accomplishments of their parents.
  16. I was reading this article on the French SB fansite and two things stood out to me http://santabarbara-online.com/article3Audience1989-2.htm First, I always forget the almost real-life-soap detail that Bridget Dobson was competing against the show her parents created. I recall an article upthread that Bridget had to convince the Hursleys to let her write because they thought that she was too much of a "party girl". Then, they tried to manipulate her to stay when she got the GL offer by telling her that she wasn't talented enough to go out on her own. It is no wonder, with that family system, that Bridget would have difficulties negotiating with the authority figures that wound up locking her out of her show. It doesn't take a Freudian analyst to see the comparisons between the Capwell family drama and Dobson's own life. Including the diathesis of Pamela the evil mother who tries to kill anyone that would compete for the love of her children, and the Sophia, who abandons her kids only to magically return and right the wrongs of her past, which may have paralleled the fantasies that Bridget had about Doris and her devotion to GH. And the children who volley between rebelling against their father and trying to win his favor and attention. Second, it is remarkable that even in a creatively low point for GH, it almost tripled the ratings of SB.
  17. Not to go too far off field, but obviously prime time shows have a period of development prior to air, and replacements are made before episodes are show. For example, Lisa Kudrow was famously replaced on Frasier by Peri Gilpin as Roz after the initial pilot. Similarly half of the cast of All in the Family and Buffy were replaced during the development of those shows. Daytime doesn't have that same luxury.
  18. That judge needed to have better control of his courtroom. First, he allows the defendant to express gratitude and sympathy for a witness to the witness's husband, in front of the jury. Then, he allows Pat to almost strangle Talbot, also in front of the jury. Even if Katrina hadn't come forward there was no way Herb Callison was going to win that case. It is ironic that Herb felt that he should run for a higher office after botching a case against one of the most famous women in town. I mean Marcia Clark went to work for Entertainment Tonight after loosing the OJ case, she didn't try to run for mayor of LA. I wonder if Tina ever testified about what Marco did to her? Also, did Pat just leave and Talbot decided to stick around for the rest of the trial? It may be an unfair comparison but, Jacqui Courtney's hysterics were not quite as impactful as Judith Light's performance (I had no idea that performance lasted for more than one episode. I wonder how they match her level of dishevel-ness from day to day?) Also, gotta love Edwina, her bun and subsequent pixie cut deserved their own place in OLTL history.
  19. I don't know what you mean. If Talbot Huddleston (not to be confused with Crane Tolliver) didn't kill Mario, who do you think did it?
  20. I seem to recall that accident is why Katrina Karr, who was with Talbot, went to the hospital, which is when she gave birth to her child conceived with Brad, and set into motion the baby switch with Jenny by Karen and Marco. Because in the famous witness stand scene, Karen had to admit that she was a part-time prostitute (in her words "a common whore") in order to explain how she knew Katrina's relationship to Talbot Huddleston (who I always conflate with the guy that killed Susan Moore on GH, but that was Crane Tolliver) due to the fact that Katrina was in a coma (or just incapacitated) when Marco was killed, and then recovered in time to exonerate Vicky at her trial. Also, why Pat had no beef with Karen, and sympathy for Katrina, who was an innocent bystander that had her baby stolen. Meanwhile, if Larry just went into private practice so that Karen could renovate their house and build the pool she wanted, the whole thing could have been avoided (lol).
  21. I know Joe Riley recruited Pat to work at the newspaper because she was a friend of Cathy Craig which is how she was introduced. Here''s a link to her history https://thesoapoperasaga.blogspot.com/2018/05/one-life-to-live-pat-ashley-kendalls.html I forgot the sequence that Tony came first to Landview, and then Pat, and finally Paul. But, that fits with the history of when they were fired from AW. Was Talbot Huddleston, who later killed Marco, driving the car that killed Pat's son Brian?
  22. Yes, I sort of recall the story with Georgina, the racing cars, and alternative fuels which I believe transitioned the Pat/Bo/Tony triangle. I went back and edited the Jamie Sanders issue, I remembered that his grandmother was in on the scheme but I forgot that it was Patrick and not Jamie. I also can't remember if it was a mask or plastic surgery. But, I do recall that it was the end for Didi and the inconsequential return for Delilah, a great character who was too often saddled with very boring romantic pairings, although I always enjoyed a Brad and Delilah scene. One can only wonder what today's fans who hate Ben on DAYS for a little serial killing in his past would make of the longevity of Brad?
  23. Acting aside, I enjoyed the liberation of Pat over Alice. This is an unpopular opinion but I never liked Alice's fragility and I was annoyed at her insistence at called her husband Steven, because it always emphasized to me that Alice loved the ideal of a self-made man like Steve, more than the actual guy who was very flawed. Pat was pursued by many men. She had a career as a journalist that was a key part of her character. She also was a good friend to Vicky. She was a strong woman, capable of raising a child on her own, and didn't need the constant support of her family to be stable. The twin was definitely before Bo, because she caused problems in Pat's prior relationship with Tony. I don't exactly the recall the sequence of Bo romances, because I think he was dating Mimi (the former cheerleader for Asa's football team, who later romanced Larry) when he was introduced, and then he began a relationship with Pat. Of course, Bo himself later had a doppelganger when Patrick London reappeared with his face, but that's a whole other story. I know Pat and Bo were together when his mother was first revealed, because they had a remote in Paris, and I vaguely remember that she was at the month long wedding of Asa and Sam when Olympia made her entrance into Llandview. But, I think Pat was gone before the Ralstons were introduced and Bo started dilly dallying with Becky and Delilah. I think she left to take a job out of town, but I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm incorrect. In the Soaps of Yesteryear tumblr articles, it was noted that Courtney was fired because she was an expensive artifact of prior writers and producers, and the new team wanted to focus on the Buchanans and other stories.
  24. Surprisingly, I really liked this week's episode. I was getting annoyed at Liam for wanting Fallon to step away from FU (still love that name) when he abandons her at the worst times. However, he really let her off the hook when he recognized how much her work meant, and I am glad that he hasn't slept with Eva. The ending was so sad, but I am not rooting for their reconciliation rather than wishing Fallon would go with Colin. The Amanda and Adam rivalry is really fun (also loving the humor of calling the new company PPA). At times this series feels too beholden to the plots of the OG series. So, I am glad for this new take on Adam and Amanda. As new Carringtons it makes sense that they would fight for their respective seats at the table and I look forward to their shenanigans. The way this series handles drugs is remarkable. You know if Fallon took an edible in daytime she would be immediately addicted, and there would be no humor derived from her experience. Soaps have traditionally glamorized alcohol by having everyone have a bar cart with an eternally filled ice bucket. So, it nice to see a more liberal view on casual THC usage. Jeff continues to be able to carry off the most extreme Gucci looks with gallantry. That black suit with red piping, and a red striped helmet were chicer than most of the looks at this week's Met Gala. But, I missed Kirby, she was the focus of last week's cliffhanger and then just disappeared this week.
