Honoring Charles Durning, Character Actor and WWII Hero

    Aug 7, 2023

    From MEDIUM

Charles Durning’s D-Day memories were so painful that for decades he suppressed them. Drafted at age 20, Durning eventually earned a Silver Star for valor, a Bronze Star for meritorious service in a combat zone, and three Purple Hearts, given in the president’s name to those wounded or killed in military service. Just out of high school, which he didn’t complete until the war ended, Durning was the only survivor in a unit that landed on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944.

Durning’s World War II experiences are unfathomable, and his actions in defense of his fellow soldiers, selfless and heroic. During the Normandy battle, Durning killed seven German gunners, but suffered serious machine gun wounds to his right leg and shrapnel wounds throughout his body.

After a six-month recovery in England, Durning was rushed back to the front lines to fight against the German Ardennes offensive. During the Battle of the Bulge, Durning suffered more wounds, this time in hand-to-hand bayonet combat when he was stabbed eight times. Despite the vicious assault, Durning summoned up the strength to kill his attacker with a rock which earned him a second Purple Heart. Soon after, his company was captured and forced to march through the Malmedy Forest; in the ensuing “Malmedy massacre,” German troops opened fire on the prisoners, and Durning was among the few who escaped.

Durning would earn his third Purple Heart when, in March 1945, he moved into Germany with the 398th Infantry Regiment, where he was severely wounded when a bullet struck him in the chest. Private First Class Durning was evacuated to the U.S. to spend the remainder of his active Army career recovering until he was discharged in January 1946.

Born in 1923, Durning grew up in Highland Falls, N.Y., near the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. His father, James, an Irish immigrant who had joined the Army to gain U.S. citizenship, lost a leg during World War I and died when Charles was 12. James’ widow Louise supported her five children by working as a laundress at West Point. Four other children died from scarlet fever.

After the war, Durning used dance as physical therapy to strengthen his badly injured leg and speech therapy to smooth out a stutter that had developed. He began training at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, but was told he lacked talent. Undeterred, he took small roles with Joseph Papp’s New York Shakespeare Company and taught ballroom dancing at the Fred Astaire studio.

Eventually, Durning achieved his lifelong goal when he landed parts in television and the movies. His most memorable silver screen appearances among his 200 films include The Sting, 1973; Dog Day Afternoon, 1975, and Tootsie, 1982. His significant honors include numerous Academy, Emmy and Tony Award nominations.

Reluctant to visit the site where so many of his comrades lay, Durning returned to Normandy only once after the war ended. Looking back during a 1994 Memorial Day service to recognize the invasion’s 50th anniversary, Durning noted remorsefully that the U.S. had engaged in at least five wars since World War II — Korea, Desert Storm, Panama, Grenada and Vietnam. He said that each war is pertinent to only the individual who was there.

“I don’t know what they went through; they don’t know what I went through,” said Durning. “Each person fights his own war. Each person is on a one-to-one basis with whoever’s opposite him.” Durning added: “That war changed history as we knew it. It was the greatest armada that ever hit any country, anywhere, anytime in the history of mankind. No one will ever see anything that enormous again.” World War II was, Durning said, the last war that had a well-defined purpose.

In January 2008, Durning was honored with the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award, and his star was placed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame adjacent to the actor he most admired, Jimmy Cagney. Durning died of natural causes at his Manhattan home on Christmas Eve December 24, 2012, aged 89. Two days later, Broadway theaters dimmed their lights in his honor. Durning is buried at Arlington National Cemetery, the ultimate tribute to an American hero.

Re Paul Burke - Della and Royal Bay are the same project. When Royal Bay was rejected as a TV pilot, it was repackaged and renamed for some sort of theatrical release/syndication deal. I've also seen it as a VCR release under another name.

And I had no idea that Ali Shawkat was his grandaughter.

Also,Barbara Rush's 57 No Down Payment has been cited as the inspiration for Knots Landing. PS It's a good movie if you haven't seen it -very soapy!

I'll see if I can find Rush's movie, it sounds like a Saturday night plan!

M*A*S*H’s ‘Lieutenant Dish’ Jo Ann Pflug a UM alum

When M*A*S*H appeared on movie and television screens more than 40 years ago it was much more than a passing fancy. The 1970 movie was a breakthrough film, which featured a number of new actors. Nominated for five Academy Awards and the Oscar winner for Best Screenplay, it was followed two years later by a mega hit television program which stayed on the air for an amazing 11 years.

A good share of the credit should go the University of Miami and its excellent film and scenic design departments, which was chaired by the redoubtable Ken Kurtz. Professor Kurtz, who also directed the lighting and scenic design for many productions at the Jerry Herman Ring Theatre, taught classes for 43 years at UM and among his acting prodigies are Sylvester Stallone, Ray Liotta, Stephen Bauer (Que Pasa USA), Sandra Santiago and Bob Clark, who directed the classic holiday film Christmas Story.

Other alums who had different majors but made their mark in Hollywood include Dwayne Johnson, Charles Grodin and Jo Ann Pflug, the Lieutenant Dish of M*A*S*H.

Ms. Pflug is from Winter Park, Fl, where her father once served as Mayor. She graduated with a degree BA in history and a minor in broadcasting. M*A*S*H was only her second film. She was so good as the sexy nurse Maria Schneider, Hollywood was forever trying to cast her in alluring roles which called for nudity. Pfulg, who is a born again Christian, declined these parts and eventually carved out a long career in television films and game shows.

But it was M*A*S*H which put Jo Ann Pflug on the map. She is seen early in the film and quickly dubbed Lt. Dish by the sassy medical doctors played by Donald Sutherland (Hawkeye) and Tom Skerritt. “I think I’m in love ,” says the Skerritt character Dr. Duke Forrest as he first lays eyes on the comely nurse. Lt. Dish is married and she quickly flashes her wedding ring at the camp’s newly arrived doctors.

The film was a forerunner of TV and film satire which began in the 70’s. The Robert Altman production and the television show laid waste to the American military, religion and marriage. Though Pflug and Sutherland are married to others, they start an affair in the movie version and Hawkeye even convinces our Lt. Dish to sleep with another officer who was having – shall we say – performance issues. When Ms. Plug was a UM student, friends have told me she was carrying on a hot romance with the Canes football coach.

Everything seemed to be wide open after M*A*S*H jolted audiences with its form of black comedy. The TV show which starred Alan Alda as Hawkeye, Michael Moore and Harry Morgan more or less followed the same format at the successful big screen version. The final show in 1973 drew 105.9 million viewers, the largest audience ever to see a television show in the United States up to that point.

If it wasn’t for the popularity of the original 1970 movie, I doubt if we would have had TV shows like Saturday Night Live or Seinfeld or comedians like Eddie Murphy, Bill Murray, Billy Crystal or Chris Rock.

    Thanks, Hawkeye.

Paul Burke, New Orleans-born actor, dies

Paul Burke, the New Orleans-born actor best known for his roles in the "Naked City," "12 O'Clock High" and "Dynasty" television series, died early Sunday in Palm Springs, Calif. He was 83.

Mr. Burke was born in 1926, the son of boxer Martin Burke. The family owned the nightclub and restaurant Marty Burke's in the French Quarter during World War II, and Mr. Burke spent much of his childhood around the family business.

He made his way to Hollywood at the age of 19, where he studied acting at the Pasadena Playhouse school of theatre arts.

At first, Mr. Burke was cast in small roles in films and became protege to Warner Bros. director Lloyd Bacon. He travelled back and forth between Hollywood and New York, playing guest roles in television series. In 1957, Mr. Burke landed his first leading role as Dr. Noah McCann in NBC's live television series "Noah's Ark."

He also did numerous guest roles in TV series and starred in several other series including ABC's "Harbourmaster" and NBC's "Five Fingers."

Mr. Burke was nominated for an Emmy twice for his role as Det. Adam Flint in the Emmy Award winning series "Naked City," which he joined in its second season when the format changed from half-hour to hour long drama. With storylines inspired by real life crime and its gritty, semi-documentary shooting style on location in New York City, the series attracted the brightest up and coming talents of the New York stage to guest roles -- Dustin Hoffman, Robert Duvall, Jon Voight among them.

Mr. Burke later went on to a starring role in ABC's popular series, "12 O'Clock High" as Col. Joseph Anson Gallagher.

Throughout his career he was a staple in television series, utilized most frequently by friend and colleague Aaron Spelling. In the 1980s Mr. Burke found himself in one of the most widely watched series of the time, "Dynasty," as the infamous Congressman Neal McVane who framed Alexis for murder.

Though Mr. Burke spent much of his career in television, he also had success in feature films. In 1967 the best-selling Jacqueline Susann novel "Valley of the Dolls" was made into a movie and Mr. Burke was cast as Lyon Burke, starring alongside Sharon Tate, Patty Duke and Barbara Parkins.

His other roles in film include leading roles in "The Thomas Crown Affair" with Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway, and "Daddy's Gone A-Hunting."

In 1979 Burke married television actress Lyn Peters whom he'd worked with on "12 O'Clock High." In the past several years the couple had retired permanently to their Palm Springs home.

In 1989, Mr. Burke was indicted with then-New Orleans District Attorney Harry Connick, developer Wilson Abraham, attorney Pat Fanning and a convicted bookmaker, Walton Aucoin. They were accused on charges of racketeering and aiding a gambling operation.

The highly publicized five-week trial brought Burke back to his native city to face federal charges that he was aiding an illegal gambling operation by calling Connick, a lifelong friend, on behalf of Aucoin. Burke, Connick, Abraham and Fanning were acquitted in 1990, but Aucoin and two-others were convicted.

Burke is survived by his wife, Lyn, and his three children from his first marriage, Paula Burke-Lopez, Paul Brian Burke and Dina Burke-Shawkat.

I asked Mike McGavin (AWHP) about Jeffrey Dreisbach's character on AW (Norman Van Buren)   His response:

    Mike McGavin

Hmmm...We don't have a record of him or the character, Norman Van Buren. There were characters named Ted and Buffy Van Buren, who were upper-class associates of Cecile in '82. When Stacey was first introduced on AW, Cecile and Buffy tried to get Stacey to join their affluent social circles. If Jeffrey was on in '82 as well, I suppose it's possible that Norman was Ted and Buffy's son. I don't know for sure. Just educated guess

He was apparently on The Doctors too. I just a read a short article about him from November '84, so he would've been on AW no later than '84

I have her on ignore yet I still have to read her constant apologies. She needs a proofreader and an editor.

    Now there's a character name!    🤣

Working on Jai Rodriguez now.  Julie Nathanson has a ton of roles, so no sooner than tomorrow for her, and I'm about halfway through ALL of Durning's movies and theater roles.

    @DRW50

I checked into Bryan Cranston's 3 day Days role with Jason47 and this is what he has tentatively found. Until anything more turns up:

    Bryan Cranston

DAYS OF OUR LIVES   Unknown Role     3 Days in 1980   (possibly a Lab Tech named Martin --stay tuned)

I'll add it to his profile in a bit.

You can find more about her on her website LeslieStevens.net. Her official bio follows the performance schedule.

In related news, Anneliese van der Pol has withdrawn from the production due to a family emergency. We wish her and her loved ones all the best.

Before "I Love Lucy", he loved Lucy.See the love story you only thought you knew.

Join us for the The Cuban and the Redhead, a new musical about Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball, with book, music and lyrics by Robert Bartley and Danny Whitman. Tickets are on sale now. For tickets call the Eisemann Center for the Performing Arts (972-744-4650) or go online to https://www.eisemanncenter.com/event/i/6222/d/pegasus-the-cuban-the-redhead or https://bit.ly/2LfSvpm. Press Night will be Saturday, September 15, 2018.

A young Desi Arnaz sets sail from a Cuba in chaos, and embarks on a turbulent journey that leads him to Hollywood and into the arms of a fiery, redheaded movie star named Lucille Ball.

In The Cuban and the Redhead, Desi and Lucy put their egos and dreams of stardom on the line in a gamble to save one thing—their marriage—risking it all on an untested and floundering new medium called television. Can these two star-crossed lovers blaze a path that defies Hollywood and history to be together? The Cuban and the Redhead, with book, music and lyrics by Robert Bartley and Danny Whitman, is a brand-new original musical that follows in the footsteps of Gypsy, Jersey Boys, Dreamgirls and Funny Girl honoring famous icons. With an original score that features sounds from 1940s Big Band to hot Latin rhythms, The Cuban and the Redhead is the story of how Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz struggled against all odds to be together and wound up making television history in the process.

Co-Creator Robert Bartley will direct and choreograph. Adam Roberts will co-choreograph. Chris Littlefield will be the music director. Set design by Amelia Bransky. Lighting design by Dan Shoedel. Costume Design by Bruce Coleman. Sound Design by Jason Biggs. Wigs and specialty make-up by Michael B. Moore. Props design by John Harvey.

Starring Leslie Stevens as Lucille Ball and Storm Lineberger as Desi Arnaz. The cast includes: Stephen Bates, Sarah Comley Caldwell, Robin Clayton, Mattie Lillian Davis, Myiesha J. Duff, Jonathan Garcia, Clint Gilbert, Mary Jerome, Logan Lane, Beth Lipton, Janelle Lutz, Quinn Moran, Rodney Morris, Jonah Munroe, Kelley Norman, Kimberly Pine, Elizabeth Piper, Matt Ransdell Jr., Sheila D. Rose, Dan Servetnick, Joshua Sherman, Carlos Strudwick, Keith J. Warren.

A performance schedule with times and updated ticket prices follows. Ticket prices include mandatory Eisemann Center building maintenance fee. This project is funded, in part, by the City of Richardson through the City of Richardson Arts Commission.

Leslie loves the diversity in performance and creative work. She moves between acting on-camera to singing & dancing in Broadway musicals to acting in classic and contemporary plays onstage. She was formerly a soloist in classical and contemporary dance companies and LA Opera, and uses that skill choreographing for stage and teaching dance to young artists. Leslie also writes original librettos for LA Opera’s excellent outreach programs and was acknowledged by the LA County Supervisor for her contribution to the Arts Programs of Los Angeles.

Her feature film work includes leading roles in the The Boarder, acknowledged with a Best Actress award at NYLA International & Women’s Independent Film Festivals currently showing on Lifetime Movie Network- re-titled as Troubled Child and Threshold co-starring Trilby Glover, which was bought by SONY Home Entertainment for Fall release 2018.

She has worked on many festival-winning short films, including She Who Excels In Solitude and Charlie Thistle for which she won Best Supporting Actress at the Action on Film Festival. Her TV guest appearances include Justified, True Blood, Criminal Minds, Private Practice, The Fosters, Revenge, and recurring roles on the Young & the Restless and Bosch.

In the last two years, Leslie performed leading roles in noted LA theatres, Colony Collapse at Boston Court, Vanya Sonia Masha & Spike at ICT and Lend Me A Tenor at La Mirada Performing Arts Center. She acted in three short films, two feature films, performed a principal role in both The Pajama Game and Promises, Promises with Musical Theatre Guild. She played Lola in Damn Yankees with SDMT (San Diego). Leslie also created original choreography for three full length musicals, The Full Monty, Hello Dolly & Oklahoma for 3-D Theatricals, an award-winning Equity theater company. She made her choreographic debut with the LA Philharmonic at Disney Concert Hall with their original production of Nixon in China.

Leslie has been often commissioned to write original librettos for LA Opera programs and special events. Her most recent short opera, highlighting young people’s acts of Courage in the face of social injustice, is titled Then I Stood Up and premiered with LA Opera’s Summer Program in August 2016.

In August 2018 Leslie had the extraordinary opportunity to originate the role of Ariel Truax (Ann-Margret’s role in the film) in the US Premiere of the musical GRUMPY OLD MEN at Ogunquit Playhouse in Maine.

From The University of Oregon's Around the O...

Since moving to Hollywood, alumnus and actor Marc Samuel has played military officers on prime-time TV, provided the voice for characters in popular video games, and portrayed one of the Hot Guys with Guns in the 2013 action flick.

But he’s best known as Felix Dubois, a scene-stealing nurse on General Hospital who is also the daytime series’ first openly gay character.

Dubois initially served as only “a comic sidekick” to central characters, Samuel says. But over the years, he has successfully pushed for Dubois’ development into more than that of a stereotypical gay character offering little more than sass and jokes.

    RELATED LIN

“The one thing I wanted to make sure of is that we present Felix as an evolving character,” Samuel says. “He’s become more of a developed human being with a sense of his place in the community.”

Samuel grew up in Chicago and Portland, then moved to Eugene to attend the UO, where he ran track and field. He graduated with a degree in telecommunication and film and got his first break with Actors Cabaret theater in downtown Eugene.

After knocking around in films and commercials, Samuel joined General Hospital in 2012. The soap opera—which also features 1979 alumnus Jon Lindstrom as Kevin Collins—is legendary, having survived on daytime TV since premiering on ABC in 1963.

Samuel, however, knew next to nothing about the show early in his career. “The only thing I was aware of,” he says, “was that characters named Luke and Laura were in it at some point.”

He came to appreciate the producers’ willingness to tackle difficult issues amid soapy drama. The show broke ground in the 1990s, for example, with a storyline on HIV and AIDS.

Dubois’ early appearances drew mild protest from some viewers. But it soon became clear, Samuel says, that “the overriding sentiment was positive and supportive.”

“A person’s sexual orientation should never be a big deal,” he adds. “But the genre tends to lean more conservative, so (the producers) wondered what viewership would think. They were relieved that, for the most part, people loved Felix right off the bat.”

As Dubois, Samuel served up plenty of light moments during those early appearances. But over time he has worked with writers to move the character into more of a “caring friend” role.

He points to a pair of storylines that demonstrate Dubois’ growth. The first involved the character’s decision to bow out of an awkward love triangle, a move that showed Dubois “taking the high road in support of love,” Samuel says.

And in episodes this year, Dubois provides care to Mike Corinthos—father of the show’s star, Sonny Corinthos—and begins gaining the trust of the most powerful family in the fictional city of Port Charles.

The character’s evolution has been meaningful for Samuel, both professionally and personally.

“As an actor, it has offered a more varied experience and challenge while working,” Samuel says. “As a person, it’s offered an opportunity to be part of today’s narrative, where more diverse and interesting characters are being shown, and it’s not limited by stereotypes.”

As the World Has Turned, So Has Helen Wagner

    • Helen Wagner HAS BEEN playing Nancy Hughes on "As the World Turns" since Mamie Eisenhower was a fan and a soap opera divorcee could remarry only after the timely death of her former husband. Ms. Wagner delivered the show's first line in 1956, and she was on live television, debating whether her soap son should remarry his faithless ex-wife, when Walter Cronkite broke in to announce that President Kennedy had been shot.

The character she created became an icon for a generation of women who understood her mostly futile attempts to run the perfect household and raise the perfect children. Nancy was Donna Reed with real problems in the days before soap characters traveled through time, engaged in espionage or almost routinely were reunited with evil twins.

Ms. Wagner's evolution as Nancy Hughes offers a window on how the soaps have changed, technically and socially, since organ music dramatized the shocking discovery that Nancy's grandson had been caught stealing change from his father's trousers. Her life on the soap has taken her from sparring with a rebellious teen-age daughter to coping with a husband's Alzheimer's disease -- from a time when an illicit affair on the show drew sacks of hate mail to a current story line about a woman carrying a baby conceived with an egg donated by her daughter, whom her much younger husband seems to be falling for.

No one else has lasted so long in a medium populated mostly by young actors hoping to join soap alumnae like Meg Ryan and Demi Moore in Hollywood. But for older actors -- particularly women -- for whom roles are in short supply, soaps represent lucrative, steady work and attract veterans like Anne Meara and Claire Bloom, who are on the current daytime roster. Ms. Wagner, who is 75, will not discuss her salary, but most soap stars make upward of $100,000 a year.

"She's a beloved presence in the soap world," says Jason Bonderoff, managing editor of Soap Opera Digest, who calls her "daytime's answer to Angela Lansbury."

Ms. Wagner has had some dry periods, including three years in the early 80's when she had no contract and appeared on screen only occasionally. But her longevity on the show, at 38 years and counting, is remarkable in a world in which a lifetime is 13 weeks -- the standard contract length.

"What actor has that kind of run?" says Dan Frazer, Ms. Wagner's television husband, formerly a police captain on the series "Kojak." He proudly notes his own 10-year stint on the show.

Before she signed a 13-week contract at the age of 37, Ms. Wagner, who is from Lubbock, Tex., had been a singer and stage actress, sometimes working as a church soloist to pay the rent. She had roles in "Oklahoma!" and "The Bad Seed" on Broadway, played Blanche opposite Lee Marvin in a touring production of "A Streetcar Named Desire," and often did television drama in days when the medium was experimental and actors were sometimes unpaid.

In her early soap days, she received fan mail addressed simply "Nancy Hughes, New York City," much of it seeking -- and offering -- household advice. One woman wrote to complain that Nancy had allowed her television daughter, Penny, to lick her fingers while icing a cake. ("Disgusting!") Her favorite note reads: "Nancy: You do the dirtiest, filthiest thing on TV. You put your cup towel over your shoulder. I wish you'd stop it and stop Penny from doing it, too. Signed, Four Clean People from Trenton."

Now most of her mail asks for advice on dealing with Alzheimer's or congratulates her on her realistic treatment of the subject.

In the 50's, Nancy epitomized middle-class suburban motherhood, and viewers loved her Depression-era values: she was well scrubbed but never fashionable, fought with her lawyer husband over things like joining the country club, which she considered elitist, and chose to vacuum her own rugs, thank you, because she was uncomfortable supervising hired help.

Neither Nancy nor her husband ever had so much as an extramarital flirtation, but there were major disagreements, as when her husband suggested that his brother the ex-convict move in with them. And she didn't speak to him for weeks after he asked her to testify in a murder case; she considered such an appearance unseemly, even if her friend had been done in.

Clips from the 60's show scenes like a downhearted kindergarten teacher, a friend of Nancy's daughter, saying she is trying to "at least do something useful with my time," and getting a lecture from her mother, who advises a serious manhunt. Married women dusted (in pearls and high heels) if they were good and lounged if they were bad. Minorities were largely absent, everyone was middle class, and absolutely nothing was played for laughs.

Between scenes were the commercials that put the soap in soap opera, like the one featuring Mrs. Sandra Young, who an announcer says has agreed to test the softness of laundry washed in Ivory Snow. Closing her eyes, Mrs. Young tries mightily to detect which of her cheeks is being rubbed with a cotton ball, and which with a diaper washed in Ivory Snow. ("That's crazy!" she cries. "I chose the diaper!")

In those days, Nancy spent lots of time trying to run her children's lives, but even more time discussing her efforts. Irna Phillips, who created the show, "always said she wrote for women with half an eye on the television screen and half on the ironing board or the cooking," Ms. Wagner says, "so you only had to watch two or three days a week to stay with the story."

The most heralded changes in soaps have been the introduction of steamy love scenes and story lines involving social problems from racism to AIDS. But soaps today are also funnier and faster paced and driven more by story than character.

"It used to be like dropping in to see what your friends the Hughes were up to that day," Ms. Wagner says. Often, they weren't doing much. In one scene from the early 60's, the Hugheses' friends the Lowell family spent a very long time discussing whether they liked their den or their living room better.

The show was taped live until 1976, the same year it was expanded to an hourlong format. When President Kennedy was shot, the actors finished the entire half-hour episode without knowing anything had happened. The show's organist told them the news as they left the studio.

"That's my dubious claim to fame," Ms. Wagner says in her dressing room before rehearsal. "I'm in the Smithsonian on tape, saying, 'I gave it a great deal of thought, Grandpa,' as Cronkite broke the story."

As the years passed, even Nancy changed with the times, shocking all of the television town of Oakdale, a Chicago suburb, by falling for a blue-collar kind of guy within a year after the 1986 death of her longtime television husband, Don MacLaughlin. She shocked Ms. Wagner too, who felt it was "much too soon" for Nancy to remarry.

THROUGH IT ALL, MS. WAGNER endured. One fan from White Plains, N.Y., says her character has maintained a following because she's a comforting presence who "really brings a lot of family feeling."

"My grandmother who died last week watched her, my mother has been watching her since before I was born, and I tape the show every day," says Melissa Weisstuch, 33, a public relations executive with a medical center. And, as Don Hastings, who has played Nancy's son Bob since 1960 says, "Even for viewers, there's a comfort in seeing someone employed for that long."

Her colleagues say she remains remarkably enthusiastic about her work, has a reputation for helping younger actors and strenuously objects to dialogue that is un-Nancylike. She also spends off hours reading about Alzheimer's. "Not a week goes by that she doesn't hand me a sheet about some new article on it," says Mr. Frazer.

She still likes to meet fans too, though she draws the line at those who try to hug her in the supermarket. And she has reluctantly stopped having lunch with the friends of friends who are fans. "They want to talk to Nancy, and I can't tell them about Penny and Bob," she says. "It's so unsatisfactory for the people you're trying to please."

On the set at an indecent hour on a recent morning -- Ms. Wagner still gets up at 4:30 A.M. and drives from her home in Westchester County to a CBS studio in Manhattan for early rehearsals -- she came running with false eyelashes in hand, ready to begin what she calls "the improving process" of makeup and hairstyling. "I can't stand to be late," she says. "I'm from the theater, where if you're late you're fired."

Her major scene this day involves a tiff with her friend Ellen, played by Patricia Bruder. Ellen suggests a support group, and Nancy reacts angrily, refusing to believe that she might need help.

In the control room, the director stops the tape several times for a conspicuous boom shadow, an actress who seems to be whispering her lines and a scene that just doesn't play. Then someone says, "Cue the ladies." Ms. Wagner's scene is taped in one take. Her husband and manager, Bob Willie, appears in her dressing room, and they leave together for home.

So will she tune in this afternoon?

"No, I'm simply not used to watching television during the day," she says, smiling. "Anyway, I have books to read, a house to clean, needlepoint to do."
