Beloved Hallmark actress dies at 84

Veteran actress Paula Shaw, known for her recurring role on Hallmark’s “Cedar Cove” and numerous holiday films, has died at age 84, Parade reports.

 

 

Shaw passed away peacefully on Sept. 10, according to an announcement from the Max, the personal development workshop she founded and led for more than three decades.

 

 

 

Shaw’s acting career spanned over five decades, with her becoming a familiar face to Hallmark Channel viewers through memorable supporting roles in productions including “Picture Perfect Christmas,” “Five Star Christmas,” “A Mrs. Miracle Christmas,” “Wedding of a Lifetime,” “Hanukkah on Rye,” and “Round and Round.”

 

 

Before finding her niche with Hallmark, Shaw built up her television resume during the 1970s and ’80s, appearing in classic shows such as “The Bob Newhart Show,” “Starsky and Hutch,” “Little House on the Prairie,” “Barney Miller,” “Three’s Company,” and “Lou Grant.”

 

 

Beyond her acting career, Shaw created The Max, her personal development workshop. The Esalen Institute, where she taught for over 30 years, remembered her as “a professional actor and former EST trainer” who developed a course that “became a rite of passage for Esalen staff and seminarians.”

 

 

The announcement of her death on The Max’s website noted that “Paula touched countless lives through The MAX, the Mastery, and her transformational work. Her legacy lives on in the communities she created and the lives she changed.”

Fellow Hallmark colleagues have begun sharing tributes, including screenwriter Julie Sherman Wolfe, who wrote on Instagram Stories:

 

 

“So sad to hear about Paula Shaw’s passing. We often chatted on FaceTime after she filmed ‘Hanukkah on Rye,’ mostly about our shared heritage (and trying to figure out if we were related!). We never found out, but it didn’t matter. She will always be one of my honorary bubbies.”

Actor. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he moved to Seattle, Washington with his family in 1937. Newman graduated from Roosevelt High School in Seattle in 1952 and received a bachelor's degree from the University of Washington in 1956. He was the recipient of a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, which allowed Newman to study advanced writing at Columbia University from 1958 to 1960. Newman also served in the U.S. Armed Forces during the late 1950s and early 1960s. He became a Quaker in 1989. In 1965, Newman was hired as an actor at the Seattle Repertory Theatre. He acted at various theater companies throughout the country during his career, including the Baltimore Center Stage, the Minneapolis Guthrie Theater, the Denver Center Theater and The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis. He also served as an artist-in-residence at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. Newman also appeared in numerous film and television roles. His film credits included The Postman Always Rings Twice in 1981, Stephen King's Silver Bullet in 1985, The Mosquito Coast in 1986, and Tom and Huck in 1995. Newman also appeared in 1993's Mrs. Doubtfire, opposite Robin Williams and Sally Field. In 1991, Newman was cast as Kalin Trose in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, The Host. His last television credit was an episode of My Name Is Earl in 2006. He died from vascular dementia at the Hayes Manor Retirement Residence in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on May 27, 2015, at the age of 80.

[on the Caribbean-set soap-opera 'Strange Paradise', filmed in Ottawa] Filming was terrible. We began shooting in August in a cinder-block building with no air conditioning. The aptly named Crawley Studio was infested with cluster flies. Millions of them were released by the heat, to the point that it looks like video break-up on the screen. On the threat of a staff walk-out, they were forced to put in air conditioning.. The show had a fan club and a large following. There's still a large group of now middle-aged viewers who were horrified by the strange goings-on.

The world has dimmed a little with the passing of Colin Fox, a beloved Canadian actor whose talent graced both stage and screen, and whose spirit radiated warmth and generosity to all who knew him. Colin, remembered by many as the kindest man with the biggest heart, passed away unexpectedly in Fergus, ON at the age of 86 on April 5, 2025.

 

Whether portraying a memorable character on stage or screen, or simply navigating everyday life, Colin’s vastness of character shone through. He was a thoughtful and attentive individual, always considering the feelings and well-being of others. He gave freely of his time, his resources, and most importantly, his unwavering kindness. Beyond his immense heart, Colin possessed a sharp mind and a quick wit that could illuminate any room. He had a remarkable ability to find humour even in the most challenging of circumstances, offering a lightness and perspective that was deeply appreciated by those around him. In his roles as a spouse, father, friend, and respected colleague, he left an indelible mark on the hearts of many, his genuine spirit leaving a lasting impression. He had a unique ability to connect with people on a profound level, making everyone he encountered feel seen and valued. Colin’s contributions to the arts scene were significant, his voice bringing countless stories and characters to life across various mediums. Colin also possessed a passion for travelling, embracing all the world had to offer with an open mind while maintaining a compassion which extended to his love of nature and all living things.

 

Colin's memory will forever be cherished by his loving spouse Susan, and his daughter Sarah (Mark). Colin was beloved by Susan's daughter Shannon and her children Cameron, Evan and Erica. Colin was predeceased by his former wife Carol Bermingham-Fox (2015). While his physical presence will be deeply missed, the legacy of Colin Fox – a legacy built on kindness, generosity, and a deep appreciation for the lighter side of life – will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.

 

A memorial service will be held at St. John's Church, 36 Henderson St, Elora on Saturday, April 26, 2025 at 11am with a reception to follow. A celebration of Colin's life will be held at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, donations in Colin’s memory may be made to Aboyne Rural Hospice, the Grand River Hospital (cheques payable to the Oncology Unit) or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Rest in Peace to Antony Cassadine, the original Cassadine who romanced Dr Lesley Webber as Tony Castle and Alexandria Quartermaine.

I was 5 years old at the time, so someone  like @vetsoapfan or @depboy that researches GH would probably have a better answer for this question than I would.

Her character romanced and married Bobby as well as being pregnant, so I'm assuming she obviously had story. The character also had a father (Ian -- newspaper editor) portrayed by Richard Eastham, but I'm not sure if they shared scenes or if he shared scenes only with Pennington.

Dr. Monica Quartermaine       9/17/2025 --  Jason goes up to tell Monica about Drew being shot, but she has passed. Jason tells a devastated Tracy;  9/18/2025 -- As the initial shock wears off, Tracy calls the Sheriff and 9-1-1. Her papers are gathered and Monica and Jason share memories of Monica. 9/19/2025 --  Elizabeth sees Monica has passed and has been brought to the hospital. She tells Lucas and they talk about the many lives she has touched. She is calling Jake with the news and Danny overhears. E;lizabeth then goes to inform a whining Drew.   Jason shares the bad news with Michael, and is crying when Danny arrives at the gate house.  Tracy breaks the news to Ned and BLQ, and both are heartbroken.

Gio stays.  9/19/2025 -- Gio goes to the stables to ask Cody to keep an eye out for Outback.   He offers Cody the reward for finding him, but Cody tells Gio to use the reward to donate to an animal shelter. When Emma arrives and sees Outback is safe, they kiss.

Appreciate the Joe Breen interview too. The link to Joe's documentary site no longer works, but the Wayback Machine still has a few pages saved from 2019 (the photos and video are not available). Joe mentions in the writeup that he got infected because he was a frequent blood donor due to having a rare blood type, and he found out while he was starting at GL.

Joe Breen is not a well-known acting name these days. It's unfortunate because he was good all those nearly 20 years ago. This article was written at the height of his popularity. Since then, Joe became very ill & has gone through some extraordinarily difficult times. I understand he has remarried & is living his life now with his new love, & maybe a lot more hope. That's my wish for him. Read this through to the end . . . things aren't always as they seem.
 

 “You have to be crazy. To be an actor, you have to be crazy. It’s like crossing a street every day and getting bit by the same dog. Are you out of your mind?!” The speaker laughs at himself and shrugs. “Yet you keep crossing that street.”

 

So states the 6’1”, hazel eyed Joseph Breen or, as he’s known on CBS TV's soap opera, Guiding Light, the psychopathic Dr. Will Jeffries. Billed as “a crazed psychiatrist,” the character is somewhat off-center.

 

But the real man is straight on the mark. Grounded in a strong sense of familial duty, the thirty year old actor, with a face almost boyish in person, is a devoted husband and father of three, in his proud terminology, “beautiful Irish girls.”

 

As he talks, as issues of commitment and responsibility repeatedly surface, it is starkly evident how little Joe Breen parallels Will Jeffries. No two people could be so emotionally different, yet both are housed in one body. Mustn’t they cross each other? Doesn’t one have to be part of the other?

“I think I have experiences in my life that I can bring to Will to make him seem real, and get empathy for him doing things very difficult to justify. It’s why I’m here.”

 

Does he get mail? “A lot, but no hate mail, which is surprising, you know, because in a part like this you judge the fan mail by the way people react to you. I’d think how I’m playing the character would be deserving of, ‘They’re (Sonni and Josh) good people, you’re supposed to be his best friend.... Never. Everybody understands Will, which is good.”

 

And what are his reasons for coming into Springfield to wreak a havoc that would chill the hearts of any unsuspecting person?

”When I screentested, I was told Will was ‘a psychiatrist with an edge.’ What’s that mean? There was no idea of the Sonni thing. I went into my dressing room, relaxed and thought about the character, what I wanted to do, how I wanted to present him.”

 

Needless to say, Joe presented Will Jeffries in such a way that the ‘psychiatrist with an edge’ was his part. “At first I kept asking (about the crazy element), ‘Can I do it now? Can I?’ and the directors would say, ‘No, not yet,’ until finally they told me I could do what I wanted and I went with it.”

 

Was Will meant to last?

 

“I don’t think so. The story line was bought before Pam (Pamela Long, head writer) came back. She did great things with it. Originally, it was a catalyst to Josh and Reva, but it was picked up and because of Michelle and my work, I guess, was well-received.”

 

Is he friendly with his leading lady offscreen?
 

“Michelle is great. We found we had a lot of friends in common, though we’d never met before. She’s a Chekovian actress trapped in a soap opera body.” He laughs. “She’s going to hit me for that.

 

“There was a time,” he continues, “when people thought Kim (Reva) would leave, which would’ve changed the Josh/Sonni/Will story because I think Josh and Reva’ll get back together—I don’t know that’s true. We got popular since Kim was in L.A. trying for a pilot—as was the girl that plays Mindy (Krista Tesreau); so Mindy went to Venezuela, Kim went into a coma, and then who?” Joe’s light New York accent fills with an explosive laugh. “They had to write for somebody, so they gave it to us.”

 

A lucky break?

”You never know what’ll work, who’ll get the work. People who’ve been on less than a year—like myself—have big story lines. Others who’ve been on a long time have very little. I don’t know where’s the justice, but that’s how it is.”

 

There’s another reality that keeps popping up. Joe Breen is a paradox. On one hand, every step of his career has been intentional. On the other hand, he can’t seem to believe he’s come so far. Growing up in Westchester County, New York, the fifth of six children, he fought for the love of his parents and drove his mother to distraction before finally accepting and returning to the deep ties of his family.

 

It appears Joe’s fairly finished with volleying against his increasing stability. With two years of a three-year contract still left, has his character been saved from what seemed certain death at the hands of his lover?

Joe’s answer, “Who knows for sure? There’s talk of real amnesia, there’s other talk of fake amnesia, with Will the same old person—which is what I hope happens. There’s also talk of a Mindy Lewis in Will’s future.” He laughs loudly. “Who knows?”

 

There’s a quick smile, broad, an impetuous grin one might imagine on a handsome leprechaun. His nose wrinkles a little and his eyes light up with a clichéd Irish twinkle. The look is utterly different, so out-of-character from what viewers are used to seeing and it’s startling. “I hope Will’s not too good.”

 

This part is, as Joe puts it, “a stretch from what I’ve been allowed to do. If there was a casting call, you’d get a lot of crazy character people going in, not an All-American like me.”

 

With a theatrical resume reading like a “What’s What In Theatre”—Jean Michel in La Cage Aux Folles, Tom Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie, Petruchio in Taming of the Shrew, Brick in Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, Riff in West Side Story, John the Baptist in Godspell ... to name a few—and formal training at Oberlin Conservatory of Music, American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and the Julliard School, Joe breathes of the stark and sometimes naked realities of his business.

 

Is Joe Breen where he wants to be? “I’m grateful to soaps. You’re paid to learn. Sure, I want to sing. If I was single, I’d make the sacrifices. But,” he shrugs, “I had to decide what was best for us all. I refuse to put my family through hell for the sake of”—here he imitates a high brown snob, “ART!” He laughs. "Acting proved to be the viable way to make a living.”

 

If he could do anything in five years, what would it be? “Films and plays. Any art form should be used for public awareness. To be financially successful enough to work in a socially-motivated piece would be great. That’s what it’s really about. To have people see themselves, get empathy for a character doing things very difficult to justify.”

 

Joe, as he’ll readily agree, acts to affect people, not just to act. He finds daytime TV a challenging medium, one where learning is a daily process, where the performer is trusted to develop the heart of his character. “It’s a need to communicate. I’m a touchy, hands-on person. I need to be around people. Entertaining’s perfect for me.”

 

As he says this, it’s evident that, in his present role, Joe Breen is as secure as he’ll allow himself to be in this driving line of work. But as he mentions a planned camping trip, a possible sailboat purchase and a new house, it’s a given that acting is his calculated choice of communication and it’s a given, hearing his determined voice, that he’s in the field to stay.

 

Actors may be crazy. Will Jeffries may be crazy. But if Joe Breen is crazy, he’s crazy like a fox.

Author's Postscript:

I insinuated in the article that Joe Breen's life hadn't gone as he planned. As we talked, I sensed underlying dissatisfaction with parts of his life, namely his marriage, but that wasn't something I was there to write about. This was written for Soap Opera Update, not True Confessions. One thing he wasn't ambivalent about, though, was his adoration for his children. THAT was obvious. 

 

It's no secret anymore that Joe Breen contracted AIDS. It's possible he had it at the time of our interview. I look back on our chat and remember the day--he spent a lot of time with me and my photographer, Joan Fries--and wasn't at all in a hurry to get rid of us. An engaging and genuinely nice man. 

 

From doing a lot of interviews with actors over the years, I believe there really is no such thing as "typecasting." An actor plays a character well not necessarily because he/she is that type of person in real life ... but because he/she has the requisite emotions at the forefront of their personality to easily understand such a characterization. 

 

In Joe Breen's case, Will Jeffries' demons may have in many ways been his own. They were just displayed in a far different personification.   

 

The truth has come out over subsequent years. Joe's battle with AIDS arose from an unknown source. He has lived with the disease ever since. It changed his life forever and he has had to rebuild what he knew as his reality. What was going on under the surface that day I met him, I'll never know, but what I do know, and can state with certainty--Joe Breen struck me as a man of substance, one who would not give up on that which was important to him. And his life, and those he loved, was, and clearly still is, important to him.
