Y&R: Old Articles
I would say 1973-1993 was the Golden Age of Y&R. I started to not care about the show as much after they brought on adult Nick and Sharon in 1994. I know fans love and root for them, but I never could stand either one of those two. I use to scream at the TV when they were on and then we had the Matt Clark rape and then looooong story about Cassie and the Grace/Nick/Sharon triangle crap etc etc...... I don't think Joshua Morrow and Sharon Case have ever been back burner for 20 years. They always have story for those two.

Lane Davies said he was on Y&R as Julia Newman's doctor. I think it was his first soap role. Bill Foster's nurse may have been played by actress Alice Backes. I think it was her playing the nurse that finds Bill's respirator plug on the floor in the 1976 episode that was uploaded briefly. I seem to remember a girl character listed with the last name Foster in an old soap magazine/book. I can't recall the first name. I wonder if she was a cousin or something. She may have never made it onscreen.

Thanks for the early 90's uploads. I hope more of the 70's and early 80's Y&R shows up. I can't believe at how much material the other soaps like GH and Days is on youtube, but hardly any Y&R from that time period. Surely someone was taping Y&R at this time, especially the early 80's when VCR's started to become available to more households.

It seems there is a lot of late 70's/early 80's material for all the other soaps on youtube, except Y&R. I have a DVD that has like a Y&R music video on it circa 1982. It is the vocal theme playing and they are showing random clips of the show. They show Deborah Adair's Jill kissing John Abbott on a picnic, Paul breaking a mirror in anger while he is undercover in the mob, Leslie Brooks playing the piano for Robert Lawrence, Chris Brooks Foster modeling, Nikki on a plane and is clearly pregnant etc.........

I read the interview with Jed Allan and he said he was the one who had to tell Charles Bateman he was replacing him as C.C. at a party. Imagine what kind of a blow that was to an actor having your recast tell you.

There was a complete 1975 episode of Y&R at one time about Bill Foster retruning home terminally ill/Phillip asks Kay for the divorce/Leslie finds out Laurie is writing a book about her mental breakdown. It was deleted. It then was uploaded by another poster then was deleted yet again. These vintage 70's/80's/90's episodes are rotting in a back room at CBS to never see the light of day again, and they get pissed about home video recordings being shared on youtube. I think that if it's a home recording that is at least over 10-15 years old, it should be public domain and be free from any copyright claims. Speaking of uploading, what program do you use to burn the episodes from DVD to your computer ?

I remember when Joe was on, but I just wondered why they never built his character up. Yes, Joe was replaced by Skip (who was played by Todd Curtis from Capitol). Skip married Carol and they adopted a child. They went through a custody battle then dropped off canvas. Before Skip came to town, Carol mooned over Terry Lester's Jack.

Yes, LML pushed him out. James has a sister Mona Houghton who is also a writer. She wrote for Y&R and several other soaps. She and Jim wrote some Knots Landing shows as well. I wonder how James version of Greg would have worked with Nikki. I always thought Wings Hauser wasn't soap material. He was too skeezy looking.

I don't know why they let Nick Benedict go either. Bill Bell wanted to hold on to Eric Braeden and redeem the character of Victor so viewers would warm up to him. So maybe he wanted to get rid of the Michael character and quickly forget that storyline ever happened. I remember an old interview where Bill Bell said he was fond of Meg and wrote her into a corner and didn't know what to do with her. He then asked her if she had considered writing since he saw her handy work at doing some rewrites onset when a scene wasn't going well. Viewers then started seeing her name in the writing credits and wrote in asking if they would see Julia again. Meg then pulled double duty recurring till the end of the 80's. I didn't know they were wanting to keep Tom Ligon. I wonder where they would have taken Lucas if he had stayed on. In 1982 shorty after Ashley and Traci's arrival, they introduced a character named Brian Forbes that worked in the Jabot lab. He and Ashley became a couple till early 1983 then he went to make a phone call and never came back. Bill Bell's writing was all over the place at that time and seemed he couldn't make up his mind what to do with the over bloated cast.

Yes, I remember preppy blonde Kevin Bancroft. He had that 80's Ted McGinley type look. Kevin and Nikki fought like cats and dogs. His psycho mother Allison was always trying to break them up. Your right about Greg going after Chris again. I think that helped drive a further wedge between Stu and Liz since Stu told him to go after her. Stuart told Liz he wished Chris had married Greg instead of Snapper. I don't think the show ever resolved what happened to Stuart Brooks. He was gone by 1984 and Liz reverted to using Foster as her last name. I wish some 1982 episodes would surface. That was a period of a mixed bag of new and old characters. I have a copy of the one 1982 episode that's in fragments on youtube with John talking to Patty about Jack not going to marry her and Jack and Diane are carrying on. John also offers Chris Brooks Foster a job as a model and Snapper says goodbye to Chuckie. I wonder what Bill Bell had in mind with Chris working for Jabot before he wrote the character out all together ? It's funny how there is quite a bit of late 70's/early 80's AMC, GH & Days material on youtube, but hardly anything pre 1984 for Y&R. I assume there had to be fans with VCR's that were taping Y&R if there is other soap material from that time period.

If I remember correctly, there was a storyline where a young girl played by Doug Davidson's wife Cindy (this is how she and Doug met), stole an expensive car and came to Brock to ask him to defend her. Brock told her they would talk to the owner and maybe they would be understanding. Victor showed up and demanded she be prosecuted. Julia was sympathetic towards the girl and wanted to forget it. Victor was a bully and Julia was afraid of him. In court Brock made Victor leave the room and Julia told her side of the story. The charges were dropped. Later Julia wound up in the hospital from a fall. Snapper & Casey told Brock that Mrs. Newman had been brought in. (hinting at domestic violence before it was dopped after Bill Bell became smitten with Eric Braeden and wanted to keep him on the show). Julia was like a bird in a cage and was mostly at the ranch by herself. I think Casey got her a job in the hospital gift shop before Victor put the kabosh on that. Eve Howard was also brought on and revealed to Julia she and Victor had an affair and was the father of Cole. Brock & Julia grew close. Victor hated Brock. There was also some crap where there was a break in at the ranch and Victor taught Julia to use a gun for self defense. I think the plan was for Victor to set Brock up to come to the ranch and have Julia accidentaly shoot him thinking it was a prowler. Later Brock saw Victor with Laurie Brooks and he decided to persue his feelings for Julia. Julia couldn't bring herself to leave Victor. She married him at 16 and they had been married ten years at that point. Beau Kayser decided not to renew his contract at this point since the show was now an hour long. The character of Michael Scott was brought into the Victor/Julia story and then it proceeded in to the dungeon in the basment storyline. I can't remember if Greg and Nikki interacted much if at all after she took up with Victor. Greg was upset when she started stripping at the Bayou and wanted her to stop even though they were no longer married. I also think when the Edward stalker story started, Greg was having headaches and it was hinted maybe he was the one sending her crazy stalking notes since he still cared about her. Wings Hauser had left the role around late 1981 and Howard McGillin came on as Greg and stayed into late 1982. I can't recall what his storyline was or if his version interacted with Nikki.

Somerset Discussion Thread
I have been watching the final season of the old 60's sitcom Hazel. I read that Ray Fulmer who played Steve Baxter that final season was on Somerset. Fulmer also played the role of Lee Gantry on Guiding Light in the late 60's/early 70's. Lynn Borden who played Fulmer's wife Barbara Baxter on Hazel is listed as having a role on General Hospital in the early 60's.

1979-83 period also included the 1981 storyline of Victor going psycho over Julia and building the bomb shelter in basement and locking Michael in. I think they also had him serve him rats on a platter like Baby Jane. Eve Howard also turned up to try and kill Victor in 1983 and Victor faked his death.

Those vintage Nikki clips are great. I cracked up when Addison was doing his heart attack and final collapse in the hotel room. Someone posted that it reminded them of something that Harvey Korman would have done of the Carol Burnett Show......LOL According to IMDB ,Paul Savior who played Walter Addison is a soap veteran appearing on several shows dating back to Love of Life in the 60's.

A while back when the 1974 Y&R episode was posted there were several people asking who was the actress who played Katherine's maid Teresa. Today I was watching a 1970 episode of Adam-12 and she popped up. Her name is Ann Morrison. IMDB lists she died in 1978. In the A-12 episode she played a woman who's house is broken into. It turns out it was a member of her bridge groups son. The son was played by Butch Patrick and his mother was played by GH's Norma Connolly who had a theft raquet going to keep up her ritzy lifefestyle. Also according to IMDB Ann played a character named Mrs. Nelson on GH in 1971.

According to the cast list, Tom at this time was played by Paul "O'Keefe who was Ross on the Patty Duke Show. I also noticed Dan was being played by Stephen Mines. Stephen played Moondoggie on the 1965-66 series Gidget with Sally Field. I saw that Mines is on eBay selling autograph photos from his career and wood crafted items he makes in his workshop. Someone should email him and ask about his time on ATWT.

I know it's kind of freaky. People looked so much older back then. Most of the cast at that time were in their 20's and they looked so much older and sophisticated than what 20 somethings do now. Robert Colbert who played Stuart was 42 when the show started. Dorothy Green who played Jennifer was 11 years older than Bob. Speaking of Donnelly Rhodes, I remember seeing the scene where Kay was drunk and signed the divorce papers and noticed he has this Kennedy accent thing going on. I remember he had a line that went " Kay, I told you when I telephoned you".....and I could picture one of the Kennedy's saying something like that.
