  1. Only yesterday, I was bemoaning how the quality of the writing started to descend in 1994 (for example, the highly contrived scenes of Alexandra walking in just as Nick, Gilly and Alan-Michael are toasting Nick's secret plan to secure Spaulding's half of WSPR to sign over to Gilly but they happen to be doing this in public at a club where Alexandra is a member🙄)but then watching this episode now, I am reminded that early-mid 90s GL was still able to inject some snappy dialogue, such as Fletcher asking Alan-Michael "What's the tea?" @36:28. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvnTPWQqkqo
  2. Considering the fact that Hillary never mentioned Gabbard's name, I'd say Tulsi is going to have one hell of a task proving her claims. I guess she figures a frivolous lawsuit will bring attention and maybe some campaign cash. The Hindutvas must have closed their wallets and bots don't bring in money, unless you're a web operator.
  3. Between the mess concerning the nominating process and functioning of the Grammys (hardly surprising) and the Oscars, it should be clear that any artist should not be looking to these institutions for validation of any kind.
  4. Thanks for that timeline @slick jones. I definitely remember Maggie Burke as Dr. Samuels. I think there were an abundance of false positives and switched tests during that time period, lol.
  5. I definitely remember her in Margo's miscarriage storyline which was in '86. According to IMDB she was on the writing staff in '84. I always get Dr. Michaels and Dr. Samuels mixed up. Apparently IMDB claims that she played both roles? This is probably the reason why I got confused. I do remember another actress playing Dr. Michaels at some point though.
  6. I know he was briefly on ATWT and Courtney Simon was a recurring character on the show but I don't know whether their characters ever intersected. Courtney Simon was also on the writing staff but I don't remember how early she started or whether Peter was already on GL by then.
  7. Hm. Food for thought in this thread.
  8. Another incoming.
  9. Was Simon's interpretation of Ed Bauer dour before Maureen was killed off? It seems as though writers cast Simon to be the "heavy", as if this is what they expected from a patriarch on a soap. The irony is that, in the long run, Ed didn't become anything close to a patriarch, mainly a man who would engage in emotional self-flagellation and wring his hands about what could have been in his life, in regards to his failed relationships. Was Michael O'Leary being cast because of a resemblance to Mart Hulswit? Without even looking at pictures, I'm seeing a resemblance in my mind's eye.
  10. No offense, but Jarry is an idiot. Also, no offense to Argentina (especially since I do like DelPo and think he's great for the game, I also enjoy Diego) but Argentina has had more than a few cases of doping offenses, each with their own ridiculous set of excuses for said offense.
  11. I dropped off with ATPCup and so, didn't see the final but apparently Team Serbia's post final celebrations have been causing some head shaking and disappointment? Tennis tournament organizations usually opt for $$$ over the health of the players. I'll never the year that the heat caused mass retirements from matches and some players even had delusions on court due to the extreme heat.
  12. A whole bunch of people should've been DQed this week. If Pliskova didn't get DQed for smashing a hole into the chair umpire's station, I doubt Medvedev was going to get more than a fine. In addition to having these obscure rules about footfaults, 'not up' balls and the like, tennis needs to have some clarity on constitutes abuse, in all its forms. Don't allow spectators to verbally abuse or goad players, which I've seen, have some specific guidelines that penalize players who hurl verbal abuse at officials including ball persons/kids (and in the case of minors, intimidation or coercion should count as a form of abuse), other players and even members of their team who are in the stands. Tennis ought to develop some type of awareness campaign of the penalties for causing damage or injury to anyone in the umpire chair, a linesperson (e.g. Nalbandian) because I always get the sense that the players are only guessing at where the "line" is, and they end up crossing it often. That the rules are not evenly applied is something of an understatement.
  13. Tennis isn't normally like this, huh? Does no one recall the time that Jeff Tarango's wife slapped a chair umpire? I guess not. SMH.
  14. I saw this yesterday and got a chuckle. People at the All England Club must know that people change their minds and evolve their thinking over the years. When Serena made this statement, 38 was a lot older physically than it is today, with evolved training techniques and changed technology in racquets and equipment. Just like the attitudes about married players having viable careers have changed. Remember when people used to believe that a married player's career would immediately go downhill? The folks at Wimbledon would probably chafe at being reminded of some of the things they've said and done (or failed to do) over the decades.
  15. TBF, Zverev had problems with DFs and his game for most of last season, way before the exho. I mean, some people's biases are clouding the central issue. Zverev has had problems with these issues for quite a long time. Tsitsipas has always had temperament issues which he has barely concealed up until now. Circumstances have unmasked issues that were already there. It's fine to have biases and preferences for your favorite player(s), it's human but don't let that cloud your judgement on the essential issues.
  16. I know that the UAE often side with KSA (they did with the dispute between KSA and Qatar) and KSA and Iran have been bitter rivals for at least 40 years now (there was a really comprehensive Frontline PBS special all about this) but this would be a very circuitous route to get at KSA, one of USA's ally, imo. Also, Dubai has become a popular destination, especially among the wealthy, so I guess perhaps that might the reason they chose to name it? The animus between Iran and Israel is obvious but I guess Haifa is considered something of a hotspot, I'm guessing because of its cultural and religious history but because of its somewhat mixed demographics, it strikes me as odd that Haifa would be the city that was mentioned. I guess perhaps like Dubai, Haifa is seen as high profile in the ME. Some news analysts are dismissing these threats but that strikes me as foolish. I bet residents of these cities are taking the threat seriously though. Haifa, experienced rocket attacks by Hezbollah over fifteen years ago and there are said to be at least one Hezbollah-adjacent militia group in Iraq that are backed by Iran. In the end, Iran may stand down on their statement but to dismiss the threat seems foolhardy.
  17. I know Iran has beef with both but I honestly don't really know what to make of this declaration.
  18. Oh sh*t! Even though I could see this coming, still...to read about it, knowing that it's now an inescapable reality is sobering. The only possible point of respite is that other countries that are would be allies want no part of this entire debacle. Not even the U.K. with dopey Boris Johnson wants anything to do with this catastrophe.
  19. Damn, what's going on with Zverev and Tsitsipas?? There were photographs of Zverev's father with tears in his eyes, apparently after being verbally abused by his son Sascha. Apparently Boris got some of the abuse too. Now this. These guys are behaving very badly. Not a good look at all. I'm actually feeling sorry for their fathers.
  20. So, I didn't miss anything. Figures have already been revised since this article. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-awards-golden-globes-ratings/gervais-hosted-golden-globes-audience-dips-in-early-tv-ratings-data-idUSKBN1Z51RW?feedType=RSS&feedName=entertainmentNews
  21. She may perform better than expected in states with a white majority like the first two primaries but by the time the primaries move to SC, I could see her falling back down. And if her connection to the Central Park exonerated becomes more publicized, she'll have a lot to answer for. It won't be pretty.
  22. Other than the one or two organizations working as non-profits, nothing is being done by the actual government to prevent voter disenfranchisement and suppression during the next election, despite the history.
