Passion is one of the many reasons I started posting here more.  Plus, I enjoy intelligent dialogue that goes deeper than I hate this said character or whatever scene.  I want to engage in thought provoking discussion, and this is the place to do it!

Tropes helped kill soaps as well.  This little genre couldn't move past certain tropes and stereotypes.  Ron Carlivati is the absolute worst when it comes to this, and any show he helms will suffer under his pen, eventually.

It seems every show he writes for goes in this order:

    Doppelganger

    Back From The Dead

    D.I.D.

    Cartoon Villain Crashes Wedding

    Back From The Dead Again

Then We Arrive at MASKS......That's where we are now in his little timeline.

OH....and don't forget rapemance.  Ron just has to do a rapemance.

    It really gets tiresome.

    Thank you!

When I think of the 80's, I always remember the dog wedding Calliope put together.  That was HORRID!  I was just a kid, and it insulted my eight year old mind.  People lay all of the blame at Reilly's feet for Days turning into a shitshow.  While he made a massive contribution that cannot be denied, this show started going downhill long before he arrived.

Yeah, that was awful.  Poor Robert Clary had to sing for them!  I wonder what he thought about that?  I was more interested in the CBS soaps in the 80s and 90s, but that gradually waned too.  The soaps started copying each other too much, and not in a good way (e.g., Reva being cloned on GL; I'm surprised that JER didn't come up with that one first).  I mostly stopped watching soaps all together in the late 90s, then a co-worker got me into watching Days again, around 2006.  I've stuck around out of habit since then, but they've almost lost me.  I'm barely watching now.  I was not familiar with Ron's prior work, so I tried to give him a chance, but I finally had to admit that he's terrible.  I'm afraid we're stuck with him until the end though.  I don't know how soaps will ever again attract the new audience they need to survive (and they've alienated many of the old audience).  There are just way too many other quality options now.

  2. Some of the 80s stories (and performances) do seem cringe-worthy now, but I continued to watch, even after my favorites left.  I do think Sheri could still mine warm moments from the OTT stuff.   I thought the scripts she wrote in her latest stint with Days were good but those were too few.  I suppose she didn't want to remain at that capacity.  She seemed to have little, or no, influence on Ron, as far as her consulting position was concerned.

@DaysFanatic777I always enjoy your posts too, wherever I may find them.

  3. Sometimes I wish for more Horton returns, but then I remember who is writing, and then I'm content to keep them in my memories.  Sarah Horton finally returned and she barely interacts with her Horton family.  Eli rarely does either, except in his professional capacity.  I do hope that Marie at least returns if/when the show is canceled in the next few years.

Thank you! Do you know if anyone else in that commercial is from a soap? I keep thinking I recognize somebody in these...

I don’t recognize anyone from a soap.  I’ve seen the blonde woman in the V-8 ad in a lot of other commercials.  I think the man in the first commercial was Will Rogers, Jr.

If the story  is true that Jonathan Frakes character was going to come out of the closet.. it makes sense that the character was recast.  The original actor (who played Bradley Raines years later) was tested with Sara Dancy and was just there.. and than one day is recast with cute as a button Jonathan Frakes (who looks good clean shaven and with a beard).

However, I do think the character would have been boxed in even more if he had come out as gay.. especially in the 1970s.  Although the alternative they've come up with isn't better.

I swear.. MJ on this show.. Katie Parker on GL.. were the two nurse characters in the 70s/early 80s that were beautiful and fun... yet had the worst luck with men.  It boggles my mind.

I haven't been able to watch the show lately since I moved away from an area where Retro was available... has Sara been recast yet.. and if so.. how does she differ from the first Sara.

The Sarah recast has arrived.  I think she's much better than the first one.  Sarah now wants to go to law school.  The actress, Dorothy Fielding, resembles young Meredith Baxter.

It would have been a much better story than what we're seeing now. No offense to the little guy playing Ricky, but he just wasn't a very talented juvenile actor. It was a rare misfire from a show that had a very good track record with child actors - Jami Fields, Eileen Kearney, Jennifer Houlton, the first three Billy's, and especially Keith Blanchard. The sooner this plot is over with, the better. Thankfully, Jonathan Frakes went on to MUCH bigger and better things.

I cannot stand Ricky and I feel like a terrible person for feeling that way.  He's not engaging at all.  We definitely have been spoiled with the other child actors.  And there's young Jonathan Frakes, whom I'm supposed to hate, looking as cute as a puppy, lol.

I'm so happy to see this article found - I never got to see it before, and having people remember, and give me the chance to recapture these key chapters in my life is very precious and appreciated!  - Amanda (AKA Andrea Martin)

I’m glad you liked the article Amanda.  I asked some people on FB (a group of fans of classic soaps) whether anyone saw you on Love of Life.  One man did remember seeing you when he watched with his mother.  He thought that your character’s catchphrase was “suit yourself.”   He sent his regards and is going to tell his mother, who will be pleased to be reminded of you.

Another said this:  I really liked her. Lynn Nelson was Tammy's illegitimate daughter who at first tried to corrupt Tammy's stepdaughter Sandy. Linc Porter disliked Lynn until she got the goods on a crime syndicate infiltrating the Carlson Paper Company. Linc died and Lynn married Henry Carlson's respectable nephew Jeff.

  9. Hi @Musical Soap Lady.  I found this on newspapers.com, from The Detroit Free Press.  Some folks in the Love of Life thread might remember you.  I didn’t start watching LoL until the 70s, unfortunately.  Would love to hear your remembrances.
