Sad to hear. It's too bad most of his work is gone. It seems like Lemay took a hammer to the character in later years but I'd still say killing John off was short-sighted.

Lemay did destroy John.  He made him really stupid in regard to his involvement with Olive (Jennifer Leak).  At least John went out a hero by trying to save Alice from the fire.  I always liked him and hated to see him killed off though.

  4. You're welcome!  I have some very brief synopses I'm trying to compile in some order.  I noticed that the characters played by Groom and Fitzgerald were mentioned less (if at all) as the series went along.  The focus changed to a murder mystery involving the Larsons (David O'Brien and Sandra Smith).  I did come across a letter that a viewer wrote complaining about the series ending without resolution to several hanging stories.

  5. On a completely different subject of GL, a couple of days ago I was watching an episode supposedly from December 25, 1955 - the day after Joe Roberts died of cancer. Does anyone know why they killed the character of Joe off? Did Herb Nelson decline to return? I know Irna had a knack for killing off characters when the actors decided not to continue on the show (Reverend Ruthledge, etc.), but it just seemed out of the blue for Joe to discover he had cancer and die not too long afterwards. I've always wondered why she also decided to kill off Joe's daughter, Kathy (Roberts) Holden, just three years later.

This was the official explanation for killing off Kathy Holden at the time it occurred.

  6. "Is there any character in all of daytime television that is more remarkable than Julie Olson? [She’s] sort of super-woman whose weaknesses of character mix well with the strength of her sensuality, whose unwitting villainy never keeps us from sympathizing with her deep-down sincerity and need for love. She is the ultimate sexual pawn of fate. Susan Seaforth, the bombshell who plays her, has so much animal magnetism, so much female gutsiness, that in her scenes it’s hard to take one’s eyes off her for a second."

I had to quote this from the review Carl posted because I agree with every word. And to think DAYS threw the character (and the actress) down the toilet just a few years later, turning her into a grandmother in her early 30s and then sidelining her into dreary, cliched mother-daughter conflict with the newly aged Hope. DAYS has made more boneheaded mistakes than any soap in history -- the 1980 reboot was a big one -- but for me, the mishandling of Julie (and Susan Hayes) ranks #1.

I completely agree, Teplin.  I admit I'm biased because Julie is my all-time favorite soap character but I'll never understand it.  I know NBC was going for youth but Susan was only 40 when she left in 1984 (and obviously still stunning and a good actress).  I think Susan may have been too outspoken for her own good.  She has kind of said that herself.  That's one of the things I love about her (and Julie) though.
