As The World Turns Discussion Thread
Thanks - I looked and this one is July 5th though. Actually according to the old WLS press release this episode (the one on DVD) should be July 15. I guess the Youtube channel misdated it? I had forgotten Rick was back in this episode. If I ever get the episode I have on disc up, from August 1981, he also features there. It's funny as there's been such talk about him here lately. It's still odd to me they cast Gary Hudson and did so little with him (maybe he left of his own choice, I don't know).

Several years ago someone uploaded a few ATWT clips and an episode from the early '80s. The videos left Youtube and I haven't seen them since, so I've decided, for anyone here who hasn't seen them or wanted to see them again, to put them up. I'll put the other few up tomorrow. If anyone can help with dating this - thanks.

Was it August for Iva? I thought it was later than that but someone else will know better than I do. Viewers first found out when they saw Doug in his trophy room, I believe. I think that was a month or a few weeks before Frannie and then Kim found the room and he kidnapped them. Soap Opera Weekly said that eagle-eyed viewers were spoiled by a promo that aired earlier in the day, as they showed a man in a suit.

I don't think viewers knew for sure that Iva was Lily's mother until a late winter or early spring episode from 1986 where Lucinda was contacted by Lily's mother and asked to meet at a bar - then she went and saw that it was Iva. Iva warned her to stop neglecting and hurting Lily (as Lucinda was obsessing 24/7 over business, Craig's dick, Sierra, etc. while Lily sobbed and whined in the background) or else. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUQr3Wdw-Hs Lily and Lucinda arrived in mid-1984, I think. Martha Byrne took over in summer 1985. I think that was pre-Marland but I'm not sure.

Yes. With Lucinda.

She tried to keep Hal from finding out that he was Adam's father. There was also keeping Jennifer's paternity a secret, although that was more defensive scheming. Marland never made her too wicked (at one point during the Gavin story I think CZ even said she found Barbara to be too passive and weak), as I think maybe he realized that year where Barbara was a real bitch was just too much, and not hugely fun to watch. I think it may have been strike writers who broke up the Lucinda/Barbara friendship, I could swear Marland said he wasn't thrilled (I may just be making all this up via hallucination...), but I'm glad he stuck to it because I think they were much better at odds than as bitching partners.

There are also the gross sexual comments Trump has made about her. I feel like some elements of society are increasingly happy to normalize that mindset, unfortunately...

Others have already explained it, but it always seemed like a "we don't know what to do with these people" scenario. I wonder how Broderick felt about Barbara as she was mostly a supporting figure throughout Broderick's tenure as headwriter.

The Politics Thread
That NYT article is rambling, pandering word salad. And it essentially calls the people it is pandering to hypocrites, so I don't know who it is supposed to please. I think my favorite part is when they decide to mention that various leaders of Europe are childless and Trump is not, even though Hillary being a loving mother in the public eye for 25 years got her nothing but attacks and derision, certainly not support. If we think about this, and the attacks the Obama children faced, I guess he is saying that you get support for being a loving father if you are a white man (straight man of course). Not sure why that's worthy of an op-ed either. So many op-eds are either ponderous nothingness or quasi-incisive pieces that really just end up stating the obvious. I don't know why people still read any opinion pieces in that paper.

Didn't Rebecca Hollen play one of them?

I didn't know they dated. Ellen Dolan talked about how during the Carolyn Crawford murder saga she would have to talk about one character named "Bill" and another named "Billy" and the actors would lose track.

I know. I never even really knew they interacted, although I guess they had to, given Lucinda's loathing of her father. Such camp goodness. Lucinda was at her best as a messy, messy character who was all over the place pushing buttons - if I have little else good to say about the last year of ATWT, I'm glad they at least remembered that.

At first I didn't care for him but he improved as I saw more. I liked his bond with Lisa - Tom and Eileen had better mother/son chemistry than quite a few Toms I can remember (the only other one I remember having any was Scott Holmes).
