1988 was another of those transition years for the show in some ways, with Leanna and Cassandra (Cassandra in particular bringing such a shift in style and letting Bell get back to some of his favorite themes he couldn't do with increasingly familiar characters). I think I have just seen a few that were uploaded a while back, like one where Cricket was arguing with Jessica.

Those 1988 clips are really fascinating to watch. Did Jack tell Leanna all that about the abortion? I don't know how Ashley ever forgave him. I'd read about this story but reading it and seeing it are so different. Ashley's agony is so palpable it is hard to watch. I imagine those who felt this story was anti-abortion didn't have their minds changed by moments like these. The reporters are ludicrous, but it's all good melodramatic fun in true Bill Bell style. I wonder if Bell was inspired by all the Trump frenzy going on around this time. This is just about it for Eileen, isn't it? I feel like they have softened her look. Did they already have Brenda in mind? I always used to get confused when people would say that Eileen and Eric have chemistry, but I can really feel it in the '80s episodes. That hug was so bittersweet. I love the Asian woman in the kicky hat and earrings, sharing a knowing smirk with her fellow tabloid reporter. She should have gotten a bigger role.

I don't mean that they care about people, I mean they care about how people see them. Many Republicans are obsessed with their legacies above all else. That's why they get so easily bruised when things don't go their way. It's also one of the reasons McConnell hated Obama so much.

Kanye has talked about not taking his meds and has clearly had manic episodes in public view. The way that the media treats him is deplorable - I was disgusted by the hypocrisy of SNL in having Pete Davidson dress him down on Weekend Update for giving a big pro-Trump speech when they knew exactly who he was and what he was likely to say when they booked him as a musical guest. It's one thing for people to be angry about his pro-slavery comments and for supporting Trump and for feeling he's betrayed them, but the media outlets who have made money off him and then act shocked at the behavior they exploit? It is just nasty and it exposes how empty the business is. I don't believe Taylor Swift is a Democrat either. I think she is likely a conservative in many ways - maybe just not socially. The problem is the GOP has moved so far to the right on every level, and beyond right-wing views, is now full of mouth-breathing insanity, that she had to make a choice. Given that much of her audience is women, likely women in their teens, twenties, and thirties, the choice became clear to her. She will get a ton of backlash, but I guess she's rich enough to where it won't affect her anyway.

They're lying to themselves. They know what their legacy will be. He can smirk all he wants but he knows that more and more people are on to him and are calling him out. That means once he finally decides to retire it won't be based on what he wanted (a steward of the Senate, a fighter) but what he is (a sociopath and a stooge).

Capaldi was much more than "Cranky Grandpa." I really haven't heard anything good about the premiere and very little good about Whittaker's performance (I saw someone saying she was trying to be like David Tennant, someone I grew to find unbearable). Not sure it's worth watching.- Ryan's Hope Discussion Thread
Here's the comment about it: The Celanese Players included a group of soon-to-be-famous comedy writers and performers, including Steve Martin and Howard Hesseman. Under this revolutionary $3 million ad campaign, the Players improvised a different 1-minute commercial for each "Tonight Show" for a year. I'll always associate him with Nurses, but he was great on Sledge Hammer. That show was ahead of its time, yet also of its time.- Recovering lost films and TV shows

He looks like a waxwork. His wife is giving him the side eye. I have a feeling the last few months have just confirmed many things she has always suspected...- The Politics Thread
Dynasties are only a bad thing if Democrats are involved - the Clintons, the Kennedys. I remember the years of breathless press about how Jeb Bush was the "smart" brother and he was sure to be President someday, asking Barbara Bush about what it was like to have a dynasty, hyping Jeb's son George P Bush. And now I see that Trump's bootlickers Mika and Joe are pushing the line that Ivanka Trump will run in 2020, which is ludicrous, yet shows the feverish Beltway need for these bad melodramas. (you have to laugh at everyone knowing the ugly brothers have no chance)- The Politics Thread
I don't think he'd need any encouragement. He's run over and over and over even after being thrown out of office. He believes he has a calling.- Bravo's The Real Housewives of....

I saw the tweet where he was complaining about whataboutism. If he had any self-awareness I'd say he was trolling. The media has destroyed so many pillars this country stood on. I just hope that they don't have the influence they once did even a few years ago. It's the only hope one can have at this point.- The Politics Thread
Kavanaugh was always getting confirmed. The media will spin it the best way they can to blame Democrats but he was always getting confirmed. I notice that right wing bastions like CNN, the Washington Post, and Chuck Todd are banging this drum. They know what gets their checks in the mail. Collins never wavered and Flake never really did either. Do I think that people on the left put Avenatti on too much of a pedestal and yet again fell for the "we need a fighter" daddy issues that also led us to Bernie Sanders and his incoherent shouting being seen as the ideal...yes, I do. But Avenatti didn't do anything that wasn't already going to be done. It was the media who really made him what he was, because he was flashy, loved going on TV, and was happy to make himself the story. They could use him to demoralize Democrats and help Republicans, and they did. Stormy Daniels always seemed much smarter than he did, anyway. You don't survive as long as she has in such a toxic business if you are an idiot. He rode her coattails. Hopefully the ride is over.- The Politics Thread
She's deluded. I saw that people were saying he was going to be supportive of things like marriage equality, which is insane if she actually believes this is true - he will be an extremist right down the line, as most of the Bushies that got packed onto the courts were. He calls birth control "abortion pills" - what more needs to be said? This is just like when she voted to repeal the ACA while claiming she only did so if they did what she wanted. They didn't. He won't either. She is one of those Republicans who cares about her legacy, and deep down she knows she just destroyed it, for all of history. When those far right rulings start pouring in (which they will), Maine will blame her. I just hope Manchin won't mess that up. I'm already seeing people say this proves Democrats are no better than Republicans.- Dynasty Discussion Thread

If Manchin does vote to confirm I won't be surprised if he switches parties. This latest quavering speech from Collins makes me think she knows she is done in 2020. The lecture circuit pays and they support Kavanaugh, presumably, as all of DC does.- The Politics Thread
I'm not a big fan of the America = Nazi Germany stuff, mostly because I think it needlessly distracts from present-day perils for something that has become so meaningless through overuse over the last few decades, but at least these debates are now starting to point out more of McConnell's role in the breakdown: https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2018/10/5/17940610/trump-hitler-history-historian- The Politics Thread
She's just a phony. No wonder Olympia Snowe didn't like her (allegedly). She's gotten by with a lot in Maine because Maine is somewhat conservative and because she's seen as above politics, but I don't think she will have the same easy time now.- Emmerdale: Discussion Thread
