Guiding Light Discussion Thread
I forgot Reva and Roger were intertwined a bit in Reva's last year pre-bridge. I remember reading a long-gone GL fic from the mid '90s where Roger interacted with Reva when she was singing by the piano at Towers - I can't remember if they had much interaction in the real GL at that time.

A Billy/Vanessa/Josh/Tangie quad could have been plausible. I do wonder how different Josh's stories might have been if he and Tangie hadn't been such a flop. The idea of Kim Zimmer and Marcy Walker facing off is compelling, although Cynthia Watros probably never would have been hired in that universe.

I'm trying to remember if Josie had some madam who came to Bay City or if that is another show entirely. As for fan backlash to these pimp and prostitute stories, I don't know of any. The only thing I remember is that Roscoe Orman had to leave his role as a pimp on AMC because he was on Sesame Street at the same time. I suppose the serial killer stories on DAYS had more ramifications, especially the one in 2003 - but then everyone was brought back, so maybe not. And Loving, which doesn't really count because the show was ending. AW's mostly just had the long-term effect of killing interesting characters and leaving a stench of misogyny.

Yes, I don't remember Wanda being in the credits - if she was it wasn't for long. Williams had such a striking credits shot, which made his absence stand out even more. Vanessa vs Vicky was yet another story of that period which seemed to mostly get dropped. A real waste. To me Matt was worse than Frank because even if he was never the most interesting part of the Coopers, I did believe Frank's relationships with his family (especially Harley in her first stint). Matt had scenes with Bridget, and Nola, but I just never believed them as a family unit. IIRC Matt was initially intended as a love interest for Lucy (was it Lucy?) and the fling with Vanessa only became a real relationship because of vocal audience support (just ask Paul Rauch about that - if you want his spirit haunting you, anyway). I imagine that's one of the reasons why their relationship never felt overly genuine. The scraps I've seen of them around the late '00s do feel like a more natural path of where their relationship would have gone rather than just a passive Vanessa wandering around in oversized pajama sets.

ALL: Short lived Headwriter stints
Thanks. I couldn't remember if bringing back Philip was her or L Virginia Browne.

Guiding Light Pat Falken Smith - 1982. I'm not entirely sure what stories she had the chance to create. Was she the one who came up with Company?

Y&R May 2024 Discussion Thread
Thank you @janea4old for all this info. It seems like Chance never did get a chance (no pun intended) as a character in any of his turns. I am only interested if it means we see Nina again. On paper the whole Abby/Devon relationship could be very compelling but I'm guessing that wasn't the case. Hearing about Devon and sex scenes reminds me of him humping his aunt immediately after learning she wasn't his aunt, or whatever that was.

Emmerdale: Discussion Thread
Roy Boyd, who had a regular role on Crossroads in the early '80s and was in a slew of TV parts, including Doctor Who, EE, Emmerdale Farm, Corrie, among many others. I thought he had a lot of charisma in his Emmerdale stint. https://www.atvtoday.co.uk/238951-crossroads/ Dryden Hogben | Emmerdale Wiki | Fandom

Y&R May 2024 Discussion Thread
Thanks! What a grimy way for her to have to end her career as a maid. I know some fans enjoyed Colin but I just couldn't be bothered by that point. Thanks for such a detailed response. I really appreciate it. I didn't even know Sharon had a business...

Y&R May 2024 Discussion Thread
Someone today asked me if Esther is still a maid. I assume she isn't, but I have not watched Y&R very much in a number of years (and years). (I know Esther barely appears anyway) Who lives in the Chancellor mansion now? Does anyone?

Maisie's murder (near the end of this episode). I don't think I'd ever seen it before. I wonder if this is the first time Maisie was ever dressed up. I notice this is much shorter than some of the later strangling - more like a Vulcan neck pinch. Maybe someone at the show decided they needed to go on more.

This reminds me - did your photo stop appearing in the closing credits when you were taken off contract but were still used? I thought I remembered still seeing them (or Roerick at least) in the closing credits for a while. Roerick still appeared fairly often until his death (he died very suddenly - a car crash). Gates rarely appeared those last few years. Looking at his Wiki I see that Roerick was good friends with EM Forster. I never knew that.

I think one episode is missing late in the run but that's all. It's all out on DVD. I'm not sure about full streaming. Amazon Prime has the episodes up to Barnabas' arrival.

B&B: How to fix the mess that the show has become?
What defines the show even more than the tired incestuous stories and characters is that it was born when LA and soaps had a certain glamour - that glamour mostly faded by the mid '90s, and Brad Bell kept the show juiced by tripling down on increasingly OTT plots. And those just don't click anymore, so you have no real foundation and no real future. But aside from that glamour, and a few icons like Susan Flannery and Darlene Conley, and some others further down the ladder that I appreciated when I used to watch [like KKL, Bobbie Eakes, Colleen Dion, etc.) I think B&B has also been one of the most generic of soaps. Due to this generic nature, I don't think it would take as much to improve the show as it would the other three soaps.

Semafor truly is a rag out of its time and place, trying to chase a '00s media market that it can't ever get back. That whole tweet is a huge self-own.

RIP: In Memoriam Thread
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/ce551e71vl4o I always had such a respect for Marian Robinson, who, after already doing so much in her life to raise a family, had to be there for Michelle, Barack and for Sasha and Malia at a time of such immense racism and bile. I don't think a First Lady has ever faced the consistent level of abuse Michelle faced (and still faces to this day). I know she must be heartbroken right now.

The Politics Thread
I wonder if this will make them stop their campaign against Biden. Not counting on it. As for public reaction to the verdict, I am so used to the public being apathetic, but I hope they aren't this time. For all of our sakes.
