- DAYS: Will classic episodes ever be available?
They are going after all kinds of DAYS pages, including those on X (formerly Twitter) it appears. Lots of cease and desist letters, and threats of accounts being suspended/deleted. Thus far, besides copyright purposes, there doesn't seem to be any official indication this is leading to a streaming deal where older episodes/clips of DAYS will be available on a platform.- ARTICLE: DIRECTV and Disney Reach Agreement In Principle; Linear Networks ABC, ESPN & Disney Channels Restored
The Walt Disney Company and cable/satellite provider DIRECTV (including U-verse) have reached a principle agreement that sees the return of Disney’s linear networks restored immediately to the carrier’s 11 million customers, it was announced on Saturday. The deal ends a 13-day standoff between Disney and DIRECTV that began on Sunday, September 1. ABC As part of the agreement, Disney’s entertainment, sports and news programming from its comprehensive linear portfolio of networks will continue being carried by DIRECTV but at market-based terms. This includes the ABC Owned Television Stations, the array of ESPN networks, the Disney-branded channels, Freeform, the FX networks and the National Geographic channels. Reportedly, the deal offers an opportunity that offers multiple genre-specific options — sports, entertainment, kids & family — inclusive of Disney’s linear networks along with Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+. Disney’s direct-to-consumer streaming services (Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+) will be included in select DIRECTV packages under a wholesale agreement and made available on an a la carte basis. Meanwhile, DIRECTV’s right to distribute Disney’s upcoming ESPN flagship direct-to-consumer service is being granted at platform launch at no additional cost to the provider’s customers. “Through this first-of-its-kind collaboration, DIRECTV and Disney are giving customers the ability to tailor their video experience through more flexible options,” the companies said in a joint statement. “DIRECTV and Disney have a long-standing history of connecting consumers to the best entertainment, and this agreement furthers that commitment by recognizing both the tremendous value of Disney’s content and the evolving preferences of DIRECTV’s customers. We’d like to thank all affected viewers for their patience and are pleased to restore Disney’s entire portfolio of networks in time for college football and the Emmy Awards this weekend.” In the early stages of the dispute, DIRECTV offered a $30 credit to customers who signed up to rivals Sling TV or Fubo, while Disney shared a list of alternate carriage providers, including its Hulu + Live TV service, among others. Despite the blackout, ESPN saw some of its best season opening ratings for “Monday Night Football” on Monday, September 9 which averaged averaged 20.5 million viewers across ESPN, ABC, ESPN2, ESPN+, ESPN Deportes, and NFL+. The San Francisco 49ers beat the New York Jets 32-19. The game became the second-most-watched Week 1 matchup in the 19 seasons since ESPN began airing the sports franchise (2006–present, 34 games*). This year’s game topped the 2022 matchup between the Denver Broncos at Seattle Seahawks, which ranked third among week 1 matchups, averaging 19.8 million viewers. The 2023 game between the Buffalo Bills at New York Jets topped the chart with 22.7 million viewers. Sunny Hostin, Joy Behar, Anna Navarro, Whoopi Goldberg, Sara Haines, Alyssa Farah Griffin Jeff Lipsky/ABC At ABC, the network did see a dent in its daytime lineup with “The View,” “GMA3: What You Need to Know” and “General Hospital” each attracting their lowest audiences ever for a season opener. The principle deal between Disney and DIRECTV should not only improve things going forward for the network, but it also gives the network’s coverage of “The 76th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards” on Sunday, September 15 a fighting chance to improve upon recent Emmy broadcasts, particularly last year’s telecast which received record low viewership on FOX. Note*: Overall, there have been 34 Week 1 games on ESPN platforms due to doubleheaders in most seasons. Just under a year since the final weekly print edition of Soap Opera Digest was published, soap fans were in for a surprise when fall previews for “Days of our Lives,” “General Hospital” and “The Young and the Restless” began circulating online in recent weeks from what was alleged to have come from the now specially produced full-sized edition of the magazine. Since the first preview guide was released in late August on X (formerly Twitter), and shared across message boards and other social media platforms, Soap Opera Network has confirmed that no such fall preview guide exists, either from a print edition of Soap Opera Digest or the still active online website. The first fake preview guide released presented a breakdown of what’s coming up in Genoa City as outlined by “The Young and the Restless” executive producer/head writer, Josh Griffith. It was followed by an alleged guide outlined by “Days of our Lives” executive producer Ken Corday, with one for “General Hospital” popping up soon after. All three guides created debate among fans, who were either thrilled by what was highlighted, or outraged by what was not. “BIG FYI – these are fake! Someone with too much time on their hands put together fact [sic] SOD Fall previews. SOD is only available online & no previews were included in the special edition they just put out,” noted X (formerly Twitter) user @SoapJenn on Friday, September 13 after “General Hospital” fans were in an uproar over what was alleged to be the fall preview for their favorite soap. Despite the fall preview guides being fake, it appears that at least some of the information might have been real, with some of the previews lifted from a recent article published by TV Insider, which is the only reputable outlet to have published a fall preview guide for the four remaining daytime dramas, including “The Bold and the Beautiful.” You can read those previews, here. Since ceasing to publish weekly print editions in November 2023, Soap Opera Digest has finally started to make good on its plan to release special print issues at least four times a year, with at least two special full-size editions now on sale, including “The Ultimate Young & Restless Guide” (display until 10/14/24) and “Soaps’ 50 Great Couples” (display until 12/16/24), which can be purchased online at the Magazine Store, a magazine distribution site owned by Digest publisher a360media. You can also grab your copies at your local newsstand, where available. To be clear, neither special editions, which sees Carolyn Hinsey and Mark McGarry as editors, include fall preview guides for the four daytime dramas. When CBS’ “The Bold and the Beautiful” made the surprising decision to kill off its iconic villain Sheila Carter (Kimberlin Brown) back in February, only to bring her back two months later with the twist that it wasn’t her who died but her look-alike, Sugar (also played by Brown), fans weren’t sure if the show decided to reverse course due to backlash, or if the plan was put in place all along—either way, executive producer/head writer Bradley P. Bell formally addressed the decision to bring back the character in a recent interview with Deadline. Kimberlin Brown Howard Wise/JPI Studios According to Bell, “Villains typically need a cooling off period, which just adds to the drama to their return.” He added, “And Sheila needs to cool her heels once in a while. Sheila has been a ratings dynamo, and that’s why she’s murdered so many people. She is now happily married and working at a restaurant. Somehow people forgive her because she’s always looked for love and acceptance. That’s something that we can all relate to.” With “The Bold and the Beautiful” on the air for 37 years and “The Young and the Restless” airing for 51 years,” Bell told Deadline that in a challenging landscape, where television ratings are down across the board, “fans need to know that we are a place they can rely on, not only to visually see those characters, but to know that these character will still be the same you knew from a month ago or 10 years ago or 30 years ago.” Kelly Monaco Craig Sjodin/ABC Bell also says that when a show makes the surprising decision to say goodbye to legacy characters, the story must be strong enough to justify the departure. The comment directly correlates with the recent decision by “General Hospital” to kill off the Sam McCall character, played by 21-year veteran Kelly Monaco, with Bell saying, “You’re getting rid of a lot of history. But if the story is that good, it’s important to make that decision.” An example cited by Bell was the 2012 decision to write out the Stephanie Forrester character on “The Bold and the Beautiful,” played by original cast member Susan Flannery, who was 73 at the time, made the decision that she wanted to retire after an extensive acting career in daytime television that includes “The Young and the Restless” and “Days of our Lives,” among others. Susan Flannery, Katherine Kelly Lang Howard Wise/JPI Studios “It just seemed like a poetic way for her to go,” said Bell, referring to Stephanie dying of cancer while being held by her arch nemesis/daughter-in-law, Brooke Logan (Katherine Kelly Lang), who she’s famously called the “slut from the valley,” following Brooke’s intimate relations with both of Stephanie’s sons (Ridge and Thorne), and her husband, Eric (John McCook). “It’s always scary and it’s always difficult to say goodbye, but again, very necessary,” continued Bell. “You have to kill them every once in a while in order to keep your credibility as a writer. And I promise myself every year, I’m going to kill more people.” This summer, “The Bold and the Beautiful” did just that when it offered up a serial killer storyline that saw two characters bite the dust (Tom and Hollis, played by Clint Howard and Hollis W. Chambers). Lisa Yamada Howard Wise/JPI Studios On the Thursday, August 27 episode, it was revealed that the killer was none other than Luna Nozawa (Lisa Yamada), who had wanted a better life for herself after growing up with a drug-addicted mother, Poppy (Romy Park), and after recently discovering her missing dead beat father, Tom, was a homeless man. In her mind, this left her no other choice than to off anyone who might keep her from getting what she wanted – money and power. Luna went on to frame her mother for her crimes and even kidnapped Steffy Forrester (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) to keep her secret. The storyline paid off in the end as the show recently topped its lead-in “The Young and the Restless” in three of the last four weeks among the key Women 18-49 sales demographic (unrounded). “The Bold and the Beautiful” airs weekdays at 1:30 p.m. ET/12:30 p.m. PT on CBS. - LATEST RATINGS: September 2-6, 2024
Ratings are typically lower on holidays, and depending on the holiday, ad revenue is generally lower due to the depreciated audience. Sometimes in the past networks would air new content on Thanksgiving or Christmas because they could still get respectable ratings for their more popular shows at higher ad rates but that's not happened in decades practically.- ARTICLE: ‘The Talk’ Co-Host Jerry O’Connell To Fill in For Julie Chen Moonves on ‘Big Brother’
For the first time in 24 years, Julie Che Moonves will not welcome the latest person evicted from the “Big Brother” house following news that the reality show’s veteran host has tested positive for COVID-19. “The Talk” co-host Jerry O’Connell will step in for Chen during the Thursday, September 12 live eviction episode. Julie Chen Moonves Sonja Flemming/CBS In an Instagram post, Chen said, “Friday morning, I woke up with a sore throat and went to see my good friend who is an ENT [Ear, Nose, Throat physician]. That night he called to say I have COVID. Thankfully this is only the second time for me and it’s been very mild! No fever and just a sore throat. “Unfortunately, I am still testing positive as of this morning… despite feeling good, strong and my cough being gone, I must sit tonight’s ‘Big Brother’ live eviction out.” Noting that O’Connell will step in for her, Chen joked, “I hope Jerry fits into my dress, has a ball and tells the houseguests I miss them but will be watching from home. While already set to appear in the upcoming 15,000th episode of “Days of our Lives,” releasing later this year on Peacock, Kristian Alfonso will again reprise her role as Hope Brady alongside long-time co-star Peter Reckell, who portrays Bo Brady, for a story arc slated to air next year on the streaming service. According to TV Insider, which first reported the news, Alfonso and Reckell are actively taping episodes “for a special story arc” that will air in May 2025. The actors last appeared on screen together in April 2023 when Bo fell into a coma after being shot by his son, Shawn (Brandon Beemer). That storyline twist left a sour taste in the mouths of fans and saw current breakdown writer Jamey Giddens (“Ambitions,” “Tyler Perry’s Sistas”) take to X (formerly Twitter) to defend now former head writer Ron Carlivati who had been receiving backlash. In an April 27, 2023 post, Giddens revealed, “Ron pitched a Happily Ever After where the couple reunited, returned to Salem, saw Doug, Julie & Victor then went off to hunt Megan. For whatever reason, that story wasn’t approved.” His post was in response to one of the show’s fans who directed their ire at the writing team, saying, “@Jamey_Giddens Got to ask because I’m just curious? Why do the Days writers dislike the Bo and Hope fans?! We have been a loyal and dedicated fanbase for forty (40) years and to get a payoff like this after all the hype and time! Feels, like another 2015 slap in the face!” In July, it was announced that Carlivati would be exiting the show as head writer after a seven-year run. He was immediately replaced by new co-head writers Paula Cwikly and Jeanne Marie. “My material will continue to air through April of 2025, so I really hope you enjoy what’s coming!” said Carlivati to TV Insider. Peter Reckell, Kristian Alfonso @kristianalfonso/Instagram As for Bo and Hope’s return this time around, it looks like their reunion will help put fans at ease, with Reckell telling TV Insider, “[It’s] just like riding a bike,” in reference to playing his character again. He added, “And thank goodness they keep one at the ready for me in Salem. This ride is one we know the fans are really going to love. Stay tuned!” “There is a saying I love: ‘Life takes you to unexpected places but love always brings you home,’” shared Alfonso of the experience. “Anyone who knows me knows how grateful I am to have all of you supporting me and welcoming me back when I’m back in Salem. These episodes with Pete will not disappoint.” In a post on her Instagram story timeline, Alfonso shared a photo of herself standing beside Reckell with their arms interlocked, captioning the post, saying, “Back in the Brady Pub. Hope you join us.” In addition to Alfonso and Reckell, “Days of our Lives” has also announced that Alison Sweeney will reprise her role as Sami Brady for an arc set to begin airing sometime in 2025. She told TV Insider in August, “I love playing Sami and I am always happy for the chance to come back. We always have to figure out scheduling and such, but if at all possible, I’m so glad to make it happen.” Although the show’s 60th anniversary season kicked off on Monday, August 26 on Peacock, “Days of our Lives” will officially turn 60 years old on November 8, 2025, having premiered in 1965. On Saturday, November 2, “Days of our Lives” will host its annual fan celebration (“Day of DAYS”) in honor of the show’s anniversary season at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The event will be hosted by “Dishin’ Days” superfan Tony Moore. Note: The post Kristian Alfonso & Peter Reckell Back to ‘Days of our Lives’ appeared first on the Soap Opera Network website. Nearly four years since a primetime reboot of “All My Children” was first placed in development at ABC, it looks like Lifetime will instead become the new home for the latest happenings in Pine Valley. Soap Opera Network has confirmed that the cable network is in the early stages of development on a series of TV movies that will utilize characters from the long-running daytime drama series, which ran from January 5, 1970-September 23, 2011. Lifetime According to TV Line, which first reported the news, the network is in active development on at least two “All My Children” TV movies, one of which is said to be holiday-themed. Initially, the outlet reported that talks of a revival were in the early stages, with one source describing the conversations as ‘exploratory.'” The outlet later updated its report with confirmation from a network representative. A continuation of “All My Children” at Lifetime comes more than 10 years since Prospect Park Networks, which had licensed the rights to the show and its sister soap “One Life to Live” from ABC, failed to sustain an online continuation series. Available on Hulu and iTunes at the time, the online reboot of “All My Children” ran for just 43 episodes from April 29, 2013-September 2, 2013. Prospect Park Networks TV Line notes that Disney, which owns a 50% stake in Lifetime parent A&E Networks, has been looking for opportunities to “mine” the intellectual property of “All My Children” for years. This includes the defunct “Pine Valley” primetime reboot that was in development at ABC which would have followed a young journalist with a secret agenda who comes to Pine Valley to expose the dark and murderous history of the town only to become entangled in a feud between the Kane and Santos families. The series was expected to explore all the secrets that came with the Kane and Santos family names, and would have been executive produced by “All My Children” alums Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos (Hayley Vaughan Santos and Mateo Santos), hosts of the highly rated daytime talk show, “Live with Kelly and Mark,” which is nationally syndicated by Disney. In the time since “Pine Valley” was first announced as being in development, several former “All My Children” alums have indicated they would appear, if asked, including the legendary Susan Lucci (Erica Kane), Kim Delaney (Jenny Gardner) and Alicia Minshew (Kendall Hart), among others. Susan Lucci, Walt Willey (“All My Children”) Paul Skipper/JPI Studios Robert Nixon, son of the late Agnes Nixon, who created “All My Children” and “One Life to Live,” had signed on as an executive producer alongside Ripa, Consuelos and Andrew Stearn. “Pine Valley” was based on a script written by Leo Richardson (“EastEnders,” “Katy Keene,” “Star”), who also would have served as an executive producer. In 2023, “All My Children” fans were thrilled to see actor Walt Willey reprise his role as Jackson Montgomery on “General Hospital” during a multi-episode arc that saw the character at certain points appearing in his office in Pine Valley alongside Lucy Coe (Lynn Herring) and Felicia Scorpio (Kristina Wagner). He later appeared in Port Charles as an attorney hired by Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) in a lawsuit she filed against Deception. Since the cancellation of “All My Children” and “One Life to Live” in 2011, the daytime landscape has sustained itself with the likes of “General Hospital,” “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “The Young and the Restless” remaining in production on broadcast television. Meanwhile, “Days of our Lives” continues to flourish on Peacock, the streaming service owned by NBCUniversal. In January 2025, CBS will introduce “The Gates,” the first new daytime drama series since the debut of NBC’s “Passions” in July 1999. Created by veteran writer Michele Val Jean, who will also serve as showrunner/executive producer, “The Gates” tells the story of a wealthy Black family in a posh, gated community. It is also the first daytime drama series expected to feature a predominantly Black cast since the 1991 conclusion of “Generations.” Note: The post Lifetime Developing Revival of ‘All My Children’ As TV Movie Franchise appeared first on the Soap Opera Network website. The carriage dispute between Disney and cable/satellite provider DirecTV (including U-verse) has greatly impacted several ABC programs since it began on September 1, 2024, with “General Hospital,” “GMA3: What You Need to Know” and “The View” seeing some of their lowest ratings during the week of September 2-6, 2024. Incidentally, the dispute comes exactly one year after Disney was involved in a similar disagreement with Spectrum parent Charter Communications. That dispute ran for several days (August 31 to September 11, 2023), and also put a dent in ABC’s ratings performance. As for the current dispute with DirecTV, things don’t seem to be going too well with both parties remaining at odds, according to a recent report by Deadline. The View Launching its 28th season on Tuesday, September 3, “The View” (2.101 million) got off to a rocky start among Total Viewers, down -250,000 viewers compared to its final week of originals for Season 27 (week of July 29-August 2, 2024). Compared to the same week last year, the show was down -3,000 viewers. After an exhaustive casting search, it looks like “General Hospital” has finally found its new Lulu Spencer. Daytime Confidential reports that the ABC daytime drama series has hired “All My Children” alum Alexa Havins (ex-Babe Chandler) to portray the daughter of Luke and Laura Spencer (Genie Francis and Anthony Geary), and the younger sister of Lucky Spencer (Jonathan Jackson). Since Daytime Confidential‘s reporting, TV Line has confirmed Havins has been cast as Lulu. Last played by Emme Rylan, the return of Lulu marks a turning point for the character who was placed in a coma in 2020 when an explosion at the Floating Rib left several others injured and caused the deaths of Lulu’s love interest at the time, Dustin Phillips (Mark Lawson), and teenager Dev Cerci (Ashton Arbab). Although a return date has not been announced, recent episodes of the series have seen a body double taking the place of Lulu as her friends and family gather to visit her at General Hospital following news that she needs a liver transplant or else she might not survive. Reportedly, other actors in the running for the role of Lulu Spencer included Jennifer Landon (“Yellowstone,” “As The World Turns”) and Marci Miller (“Days of our Lives”). Since exiting daytime in 2007, Havins went on to make several guest appearances in such primetime shows as “CSI: Miami,” “CSI: NY,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Castle,” “Constantine,” “Barry” and even “Sweet Magnolias,” which features her real-life husband and former “All My Children” co-star, Justin Bruening (ex-Jamie Martin), in a starring role. In 2011, Havins briefly returned to “All My Children” to help close out the character’s story arc as the series was concluding on ABC. That same year, she starred as Esther Drummond in the BBC America original series “Torchwood.” Check out a clip from the Floating Rib explosion below.
