As this month was the one SFT swtiched network, I add this article:

Soap opera leaves CBS for NBC (Tuesday, March 30th, 1982)

NEW YORK (AP) - "Search for Tomorrow," television's longest-running soap opera, continued its quest for happiness on another network starting this week. After more than 30 years, the program, which made its debut Sept. 3, 1951, switched from CBS to NBC — a fact that NBC is making sure none of its viewers forget. The network launched an extensive promotion campaign “Follow the Search to NBC," three weeks before the changeover, inerting promotional ads for the show during its daytime and prime-time programming. Advertisements also were planned for both TV Guide and People magazine during the week of the soap's network debut, an NBC spokesman said. Taping of the show, which, at least through June, will be done at CBS studios here was halted for three days earlier this month. Its 18-member company was sent on the road for what one actress, Sherry Mathi, called "a major blitz, " of the country. "We all took off to let everybody know to turn the channel on Monday, March 29," said Ms. Mathis. The actress and Rod Arrants play the soap's major romantic interests, Liza and Travis Sentell. Everyone went on tour — including the show's star of 30 years, Mary Stuart, who plays Joanne Tourneur. She traveled to Cleveland, Detroit and Pittsburgh for newspaper and television interviews. Ms. Mahis visited Chicago, Indianapolis and Cincinnati, while Arrants went to Dallas, Baton Rouge, and Port Arthur, Texas. But the main burden for persuading viewers to change channels fell to the show's staff of five writers, led by Ralph Ellis and Eugenie Hunt, who were required to come up with a strong story line that would bring the audience along to NBC. When "The Edge of Night" left CBS for ABC more than five years ago, viewers got a glimpse of an enormously popular character, Nicole Drake, who was presumed dead. She appeared just before the final fadeout on CBS. The hook for "Search" will be more exotic. Ms. Mathis and Arrants spent a week earlier this month on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts, where more than 70 scenes were filmed, including yacht explosion. Arrants described Sentell, a wealthy financier, as a "mixture of Rhett Butler and Howard Hughes," who has been on somebody's hit list — from the Mafia to the Red Brigade — since the character first appeared on the show nearly four years ago. Sentell travels to St. Kitts for a science convention and is followed there by his wife, Liza, who doesn't know her husband's life is in danger. Then the yacht explodes. "People will have to turn in on Monday on NBC to see if a couple of characters will stay with the show or not,'' Ms. Mathis said. Procter & Gamble, which produces the 30-minute show, was unhappy after CBS moved the program from its 12:30 p.m. EST timeslot, where it spent most of its three decades, to 2:30 p.m. EST. The move placed it opposite the second half-hour of hour-long soaps on ABC and NBC, and the ratings suffered. Earlier this season, the show placed ninth among 13 soaps on the air at the time. Its slot on CBS will be taken by a new 30-minute soap opera, "Capitol," set against a political background in Washington.

Thank you for this look back to March 1982. Melody Thomas Scott was pregnant in real life, thus Nikki being pregnant with Victoria. This was Y&R's big cast change year, with the Brooks and Foster families (except for Jill, who was then played by Deborah Adair) being phased out, and the Abbotts becoming the main family. Ashley and Traci arrived when Jack married Patty Williams, and Jill would marry John Abbott shortly after.

And the Williams family was also elevated from supporting players to front burner status at that time, with both their connection to the Abbotts through Jack's marriage to Patty and with the story where Carl was framed and Paul had to go undercover to infiltrate the mob and clear his dad's name. Pretty much everything led back to the Abbotts, the Williams or Victor/Nikki on the show from that point, including Katherine (who became tied to the Abbotts through Jill and who also became Nikki's mentor and friend).
