SOAPnet: Schedule change! GH Marathon shifted to the Graveyard!

Me predicky SOAPnet has acquired a new soap. Why do you ask about my speculating on this matter?

Disney/ABC's crown jewel, GENERAL HOSPITAL, is having the weekend marathon moved to 1AM Sunday EST from its VERY cushy 1PM Saturday timeslot. Weird, huh? Why is GH replacing AMC's first marathon airing on the weekends? SOAPnet's not dumb enough to replace one of its top-rated serial's weekend marathon with more 90210 and MELROSE PLACE. Right?!

And as much as I would LOVE to see ANOTHER WORLD get its weekend marathon back, I don't really see that happening, either. I've read that the same-day episodes of current soaps are where the ratings are for SOAPnet, which is why RYAN'S HOPE, PORT CHARLES, and AW only get one airing.

And it makes me wonder IF SOAPnet acquired another serial, what the heck is it?! If the show that was acquired was THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL, its weekend marathon would only warrant 2.5 hours. SOAPnet could have easily moved GH back about 2 or three hours to accomodate B&B's weekend marathon coming on between GH and Y&R.

Could it be an hourlong show?! The PGP serials don't perform well for the target audience SOAPnet wants(unless PGP is willing to sell same-day GUIDING LIGHT to SOAPnet at a really low fee. That is the only show I could see fitting in aside from B&B).

I doubt NBC wants SOAPnet to have same-day PASSIONS airings and even IF NBC were interested, I doubt SOAPnet would be.

I would be quick(and possibly right) to assume that B&B is the newest acquisition. But why would GH's Weekend Marathon have two graveyard airings?! Especially if the network could do something as simple as push GH back to accomodate B&B. Something just doesn't add up to me. That's why it's possible the next soap on SOAPnet could be PGP owned.

But obviously this is all speculation on my part. It just makes me wonder WHY would SOAPnet push both of GH's marathons to late-night airings?

When is this supposed to take place? I just went ahead three weeks in my guide and GH is still airing at it's regular Saturday Timeslot.

If any soap was to be moved, it wouldn't be GH (permanately anyway). Maybe they will be airing some specials.

Once SoapTalk finishes burning off the remaining "new" episodes and WWTBASS finishes up the season, that would open up some time during the weekend. They really don't need to continue repeating ST as often as they do. They might as well just make a SN2 while they're at it. How many more shows can they possibly handle?

But I do need my Saturday morning 90210 fix. But they can cut it back to 2 episodes a weekend, rather than 3 if that opens up more room for another show.

Not doubting you Bellcurve, but where did you hear this from? It's obviously interesting and hopefully GOOD news.

I saw the blurb during yesterday's afternoon airing of GH.

But why move GH to accomodate specials?! And why not say this upfront (GH's weekend marathon will not be seen at its regular time, blah blah).

I would totally see them moving GH to an earlier timeslot than sticking it in the graveyard for both airings altogether.

Moving GH's cushy afternoon weekend airing makes NO sense to me! What are they going to put in its place?

I think that is one of SOAPnet's biggest issues: they replay SOAPOGRAPHY, ONE DAY WITH, and SOAPTALK enitrely too much instead of allowing one marathon to lead into another. Keep your audience hooked. You don't see Lifetime interrupting their all-day cheesy movie marathons with ANY DAY NOW or GOLDEN GIRLS spliced in between the movies.

But I do need my Saturday morning 90210 fix. But they can cut it back to 2 episodes a weekend, rather than 3 if that opens up more room for another show.
But 90210 airs too much as well. The oversaturation of primetime reruns is something SOAPnet needs to get out of the habit of doing.

I didn't hear anything about the acquisition of a new soap, most of this is just speculation on my part. Although on a UK B&B board(forgot the link), someone who "claimed to work for CBS" rumored that B&B was the newest SOAPnet acqusition.

The news of GH's schedule shifting came from the blurb at the bottom of the screen during this past Saturday's GH marathon.

If SOAPnet is obtaining a new soap, I wish they would hurry the hell up and make the announcement instead of pussyfooting about!

Sometimes they shift the marathons to make room for specials.

I doubt CBS would have much say in B&B joining the SoapNet lineup. That would probably be handled directly with the Bell Dramatic Serial Company. SoapNet went directly to Sony when the acquired Days and Y&R, NBC and CBS had pretty much no say in the matter. I don't believe that person who "claims to work for CBS" for one minute.

I'm not doubting you at all, Ryan. It's just odd that the blurb didn't say, "Next Weekend, see GH at a special time." When SOAPnet did the SOAPSTAR special last weekend, they just waited that week in the promos to say, "See OLTL at a special time."

SOAPnet's scheduling just seems so fishy.

And we haven't heard anything of an annoucement yet regarding a marathon. If they are classic soap marathons, those are usually hyped well in advance. Unless they are attempting to do ANOTHER SOAPSTAR marathon or a replay of OLTL's "If It's Not One Thing, It's Your Mother."

And Marathons usually need 5 hours of programming from SOAPnet's schedule. So GH's move still seems fishy to me.

They did that last Sunday with the AMC marathon, it got bumped back to 11am, so they could show a Soap Star Marathon

You're right...CBS wouldn't have any say in the matter, but they would still KNOW if one of their soaps was being rebroadcasted on SOAPnet, no?

I think the "person that works for CBS" sounded kind of unbelievable also, but CBS would still know if one of their soaps was being replayed on the SOAPnet lineup.

I do think that something is on the horizon at SOAPnet(or at least I hope so). DYNASTY's rerun license has run out, KNOTS LANDING's did a while back. Are these cutbacks to absorb Y&R's acquisition or to save the money to acquire same-day rebroadcastings of another soap? Or another cancelled daytime soap?

I know that it will frustrate the hell out of me if 90210 and MELROSE air twice a day M-F, and RYAN'S HOPE and(even) PC still aren't moved to the afternoon!

They should save 90210 and Melrose for just the weekends. [i don't know what the schedule is like during the week, but I assume they air them weekdays too?] 2 episodes of 90210 on Saturday, 2 episodes od Melrose on Sunday. 90210 is one show that has been shown in reruns for g-d knows how long. I remember when it was still on the air, the WB (or was it still just a generic local network back then?) aired the episodes every day from 4-6. Then of course FX picked them up for many, many years. I kinda think enough is enough, even though I'd still watch any episode if I happen to stumble upon it at any time.

Cutting back on these 2 shows, while still keeping them in rotation, would open up more time slots for marathons and/or newly accquired shows.

I agree, SoapNet is definitely becoming too heavy with BH 90210. I guess Y&R is doing extremely well for them too, they seem to be promoting the hell out of it and the Saturday night reruns. I hate that annoying commercial they have for the Saturday marathon. Something is definitely fishy though, I wouldn't be surprised if they acquired a new show.

SoapNet is in definite need of a sister channel. They could air the daytime dramas on one network and air re-runs of primetime dramas and original programming on the other network. With Frons in change now, I doubt it will ever happen.

BH90210 must get great ratings for them to show it so much, same for Melrose Place, and yes they air 7 days a week

90210 airs weekdays on SOAPnet. TWICE A DAY! And I agree with you about cutting the airings of the shows down to weekends. That might work.

Are you talking about that cheesy "Hollaback Girl"-esque promo? I actually LIKE that one.

That's what I am hoping for. And NO MORE PRIMETIME SHOWS!

I hope with SOAPnet2 that only cancelled daytime soaps air on that network. And marathons of cancelled and current-run soaps(i.e. like the Emmys Marathon that aired this past April, or a classic DAYS marathon).

With Frons in change now, I doubt it will ever happen.
Yep. He is gonna turn Deborah Blackwell's hard work in building SOAPnet into trash.

I don't think MELROSE or 90210 air on Sundays, thank GOD!

I can't remember, but I do think 90210 and MP air early Sunday mornings
