I remember and still listen to a lot of those on XM. This was around the time (I was in middle and high school) I started diversifying my taste in music outside of hip-hop and R&B. Of course, alternative was all they'd play on the radio around that time. I've even ::looking behind my back:: bought and still own a few cds. Some people thought I was weird. But I didn't give a damn. LOL!

That's great crc! I to am very diversified when it comes to music. It's not unusual for me to have Mary J. Blige, Enya, and Metallica on my playlist lol

A little history on Alternative Music

The terms alternative rock and alternative music were coined in the 80s to describe punk rock-inspired bands on independent record labels which didn't fit into the mainstream genres of the time. Though the genre is considered to be rock, its influenced by folk, new wave, reggae, swing, techno and jazz.

The explosion of alternative rock was aided by MTV's Alternative Nation, 120 Minutes and Lollapalooza. Bands broke through into the mainstream in the early 1990s, making alternative the most popular form of music at the time. By 1998 Alternative has become almost obscure. Lollapalooza was cancelled, and MTV and the radio had been taken over by boy bands, Latin explosion and Hip/Hop R&B.

In 2004, Lallopalooza was resurrected and Alternative once again became mainstream with the with the popularity of indie rock artists such as The White Stripes, The Killers, Modest Mouse and Franz Ferdinand.

During the past 2 years, Alternative music has become popular once again. Although Alternative artists do not get much airplay on Top 40 radio, album sales have almost matched Pop and Hip/Hop sales, and there have been numerous ALt/Rock stations popping up around the country. In addition to the Alternative and Modern Rock Charts, there has even been a new radio/record chart added called Triple AAA or "Adult Album Alternative" for artists who do not fit into the Pop/HipHop genre. Yeah Yeah Yeahs, KT Tunstall, Keane, and Snow Patrol are just a few who do well on AAA radio.

I know pretty much all of those songs too. Bands like the Smashing Pumpkins, DMB, No Doubt, NIN, etc. define my teenage years, DMB especially...I was a wannabe hippie for a long time. Now I feel super old! You know you're old when the songs you grew up listening to were from another decade.

I used to be a total alt. rock fan in middle school and most of high school: everyone was listening to the pop music station in town, and I thought I was cool b/c I listened to the alternative rock station instead.

I stopped listening to it, though, b/c it got "too popular" when they started playing Good Charlotte and New Found Glory, and those kinds of bands. It was the same w/ the store Hot Topic: I guess I was stupid back then b/c in HS I was really obsessed w/ that store. Now, whenever my best friend and I shop at the mall, we're always like, "What the hell were we thinking?"

I'm pretty ecclectic when it comes to music too. I really like classic rock and classic R&B, but I also listen to indie rock occasionally. But I'm definitely going to download some of the songs from this list onto my iTunes library tonight and tomorrow.

I remember some of those songs and recognize most of the bands/artists. Growing up in Canada, though...I'm more familiar with their alt-rock scene (ie. Our Lady Peace, Moist, Limblifter, Sloan, the Tea Party, etc.)

Alt-rock to me now is a blurred with what people consider to be indie music...or stuff that doesn't become big hits on the radio. Bands on small, more unknown labels are more likely to experiment and not have heavily produced albums that are supposed to be radio-friendly.
