Members Vee Posted yesterday at 12:00 AM Members Share Posted yesterday at 12:00 AM You're gonna run out of soaps pretty quick.
Members janea4old Posted yesterday at 12:02 AM Members Share Posted yesterday at 12:02 AM That's why I watch only selected scenes in other soaps, where I know I won't see the "regularly-on-canvas" villains. Currently watching BTG in full, but that may change if villains become normalized.
Members Maxim Posted yesterday at 12:02 AM Members Share Posted yesterday at 12:02 AM (edited) The only thing I don't like about villains constantly getting consequences, jailed... then coming back in a few years and again and again... is that it becomes cartoonish and Scooby-doo-ish at some point. I don't want to constantly see the villain hunted down and jailed. Or put into an asylum... or worse fake-killed. And THEN - WOW, the bish is here again when the ratings are down. Because good-villains always come back. We all know that. Dana is a good villain. That's props to both the writing and the actress. I would love to see her in a slow-burn type of villainy. Sheila Carter - Young And The Restless type. Don't make her actually KILL anyone, till it's TIME and we need actually to move on from her. Keep her on the edge of darkness as long as possible. Members janea4old Posted yesterday at 12:05 AM Members Share Posted yesterday at 12:05 AM I think it's healthy (for me) to want the good guys and good gals to win. Not goody-two-shoes characters, but flawed deep characters who actually care. That is what uplifts and entertains *me*.
Members Contessa Donatella Posted yesterday at 12:07 AM Members Share Posted yesterday at 12:07 AM Most likely will not be a problem. BUT, I'm not so sure when it comes to Dana/Leslie/Anna/Lizzie/Sheila/Shelly she just might be that problem that you cannot abide.
Members Vee Posted yesterday at 12:09 AM Members Share Posted yesterday at 12:09 AM I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to see villains face consequences or take losses. But there is a difference between having long-term villainous/antagonist characters - which soaps have had since almost the beginning - and dealing with a situation like what Sonny Corinthos and Todd Manning became. If you don't have black hats or troublemakers you eventually simply lack conflict. I am sure Dana will take a hit when her schemes implode, but I can't see them wanting to lose Trisha Mann-Grant any time soon. Nor should they. That's when you start working ways to keep a soap villain around. Sami Brady in her heyday on DAYS had deep roots in the community which kept her insulated, and she also took many losses. Alex Olanov took many defeats on OLTL but rode a streak of power plays to keep her protected for a long contract run. I'm not saying the Duprees shouldn't persevere over Dana's latest scheme, but there's no reason to throw her out with it when she's one of the single most entertaining characters and performers on the show, and easily a breakout star.
Members ReddFoxx Posted yesterday at 12:15 AM Members Share Posted yesterday at 12:15 AM With soap operas the villains are going to have some wins here and there because there has to be tension to keep the stories interesting. Plus you can't have too many protagonists winning all the time because that gets boring. Balance is very necessary.
Members Contessa Donatella Posted yesterday at 12:17 AM Members Share Posted yesterday at 12:17 AM And if I were to say, and I guess I am saying. today's soaps worst problems are balance & pacing. One more thing there's always karma. My girl Carly on GH has paid in karma about threefold. So many people say Carly gets away with everything but she really does not if you count karma, which I do.
Members ReddFoxx Posted yesterday at 12:22 AM Members Share Posted yesterday at 12:22 AM This is accurate. You either have too many antagonists being over the top or too many protagonists that are too pious or too fragile.
Members Contessa Donatella Posted yesterday at 12:25 AM Members Share Posted yesterday at 12:25 AM Thank you so much for the reply. And, also for the agreement. I just shake my head. When it's really bad, oh no, our soaps are in hot water. And, balance, and pacing, can these things even be taught?
Members Maxim Posted yesterday at 12:30 AM Members Share Posted yesterday at 12:30 AM I hate the too-good saintly protagonist... Caroline OG in Bold had that for a moment... but she grew with time. The beginning was shockingly saintly though... you could say that she's an angel and not a real human being.
Members ranger1rg Posted yesterday at 01:10 AM Members Share Posted yesterday at 01:10 AM -- Dani is entitled. Period. Claiming she isn't because she gave up her modeling career is ridiculous. Everything about her is entitled. -- Anita and Vernon raised Dani to be entitled. They enabled her in every way -- and they're still doing it. Yes, Tamara plays Anita to the hilt, but good parenting would be to sit Dani down and tell her "Consequences." Instead, they made moves that are Trumpian. -- In what world are we pretending that Dani is "getting better"? She just pulled and shot a gun at a wedding a few weeks ago, not a few years ago. She's lucky the repercussions haven't been worse. -- Hayley's gold boots were a real choice. She dresses like a street ho pretending she's going someplace fancy. -- Samantha told Tyrell "Your drip is mad basic." Are we serious with this? Is the 30-year old writing her own lines? -- Smitty is so much better at parentlng than Martin. Why go to Dani for advice if he's not going to listen to any of it? And why lead on Samantha?
