Y&R: August 2024 Discussion Thread

I agree. The other problem on YR is that so much of every scene is static. We get a couple at a dining table, or at a bar, or at a Crimson Lights table. Two talking heads, no movement.

I get it -- it's easy to block, easy to film, and it's fast. It's also stifling and boring.

Just thinking that instead of the dreary Connor OCD story, they should have made more of Johhny discovering Chelsea is his bio mom.

He could have begun acting out and you have Chelsea v Victoria, Victoria v Billy and Adam in the mix.

Of course Victor would want his say and it could also contribute to Connor's issues.

A whole lot of drama to be mined there.

Honestly after picking up GH full time again and the Ashley story ended it, it was so easy to drop Y&R and the lack of sets is a huge part for me. Going from GH that has a million sets to the emptiness of Y&R and its seemingly 5 sets just doesn’t work for me.

8-21

THANK YOU, VICTOR!!! I loved every moment of him gathering Billy all the way together. Well worth making them the cliffhanger at the end of 8-20 episode. And Nikki playing Lady MacBeth to Victor's MacBeth is just perfection to me. Yes, Nikki is Victor's moral center, but sometimes they are on the same wavelength and watching them scheme together (with two people who know how to act and have chemistry separately and together) to undermine Billy has been the highlight of this week so far. I really enjoyed the Nikki/Lily scenes and how they talked about Katherine. And Nikki having a good pulse on how Lily feels. So the end scene...great stuff.

As for Billy...#TeamLily #TeamVictor #TakeBillyDown. I was shocked to see the preview for this week where Billy just upped and fired Lily. And watching it for real? I was pleasantly surprised to see she's not giving up Chancellor without a fight. GO LILY!!! I wonder if the fact that Jill does not know Billy fired Lily will play into her fighting back. Fingers crossed.

Outside of that, I liked the Jack/Diane scenes. It also continued to show how good they are together as the Abbott patriarch and matriarch. It was just a simple talk, but I liked getting to see Jack's point of view, Diane's point of view, and Diane getting him to talk to her about things he don't often talk about aloud in terms of Billy and Kyle. Cuz to be real...do we want a repeat of Billy vs Kyle when Billy falls on his face again? lol.

I was not feeling Kyle/Claire at all. Their scenes only made me think...what do you all prefer now...the GCAC or Society as the Go-To spot? Cuz we are not getting the Colonnade Room again.

I harp on the sets problem endlessly, but it really does hurt the show immeasurably. There's no reason for the #1 daytime soap to be so limited.

I'm glad to have the GCAC back, but why have characters go from there to Crimson Lights for coffee? Why have characters eating dinner at the GCAC with nothing on their plates?

Daniel and Heather were at Society today. While we saw a couple extras playing employees, there wasn't a single other customer in the place.

Lucy was in trouble and called Faith for help -- and met her again at the same spot in the park. It all reeks of cost-cutting, and it takes me out of so many scenes.

Don't get me started on the lazy writing. Lucy "walked into a bar and stole a bottle of vodka while the bartender wasn't looking"? Are you kidding me with this?

I admit I am wondering if that is the end END cuz it seem like a break for an Act II. At least by the dialogue and not the execution. They even kept the Paris sets around and added even more characters for a good minute. ED acted her butt off.

I agree. Up until the last week or so, it's been a struggle to watch. A STRUGGLE. And that struggle started once that story ended.

Now...GH is a struggle. lol. But I know what I'm looking forward to seeing so...

So Traci's crying to Alan. She wants to live in NY because she can't be herself and have her own identity in Genoa City -- because Jack and Ashley are there.

Are you kidding me? This is gagworthy material. This 66-year old woman still hasn't reconciled with her past? She still doesn't know who she is?

And why is Tracy still so self-deprecating about whether Alan will regret being with her, be it in GC, NY or Paris? She acts like she doesn't quite believe he could be interested in her. Still. And we know they're sleeping together since she so eagerly went up to his suite.

I don't like it when Tracy acts like she's letting the guy off the hook if he doesn't really want to be with her. Like you said, she's in a bit too old to act so school-girlish.

One again they are spending too much time on such non-sense. Just send them off-screen as a happy couple and be done with them.

    • That was my point really. These anniversary party scenes are the first ones, and now they won't be able to use them (meaning these actual scenes, as aired, with OG Ted). They can recreate them but I doubt they will spring for all the extras to come back and film and recreate everything, so it will be more like tight closed in shots of Ted with one or two other actors, or snippets of Leslie's original speech where Ted wasn't visible. It would be hard to recapture the original energy of the scenes are as they were filmed in their full context. I just think that's too bad, but maybe they will prove me wrong. I never really saw what was so off in his portrayal to warrant a recast, anyway, so that colors my perception as well.
    • Yeah, and quite honestly, are there really that many scenes that are flashback-worthy at this point in the run?
    • I know at one point they were on Hulu & i-Tunes. I just checked it on JustWatch.com & it indicates 1 season on Prime Video & on AppleTV. Have fun!
    • That era is so weird...they made a big deal out of all three of those characters and then they just..disappeared! Not that I am complaining. We talk about the bad out of character writing for Alex under JFP..but this was one example that may have led them to write her being so obsessive with Nick.  WHY would Alex accept Flock of Seagulls guy as her brother? They had her in one scene (setting up the Alan return) complain that Alan abandoned her...she blackmailed him into leaving town and she had been angry at him for helping Brandon with Lujack and also using Spaulding for that dumb dreaming death thing. Endless scenes of her with Simon, I can't believe Bev wasn't bored to death! I would also add Pam writing the scene where she lets Ms. Sally die in front of her to protect Alan and  the writing for Alex could be screwy even before JFP.
    • On this day 34 years ago the final episode of Dallas and came in at an astonishing #2 in the ratings after two straight seasons of weak ratings. Interesting Knots was #27 for that week as well:

    • Thank you for clearing that up. I wasn't watching GL regularly yet at that point, but seems to me I should have remembered the big wedding after Leslie's death (which I do remember) described in the profile. Is there a web archive of SOD summaries, or are referring to your own personal collection?
    • I was bummed that 2.0 ended because Mcpherson (headwriter) had really set up some interesting stories and we never got to find out where the stories would go once they resumed production on 'season 2'. I remembered the EP (Ginger Smith) and a lot of the stars gave a lot of credit to McPherson being able to come in on very short notice and come up with stories/plots (I think it was a very short turnaround time of a few weeks).  It was nice that she got to redeem herself after her year long Days stint was not well reviewed/liked.

    • It seems like a setup for failure to review a single episode of a soap, but Cleveland Amory was a foolish man.  His taste was so predictable, that one wondered why bother reviewing a medium he so clearly disliked. (found on Facebook retro TV group) Another case in point of his misogyny from his review of Dark Shadows (Can you imagine the magazine with the widest circulation in the country insulting its customer in this way today?)

    • They could easily be re-created, or even re-shot in different ways, especially if they were re-shooting scenes at some point, as well.
