On the same night “General Hospital” took home its 16th Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Daytime Drama Series, Nathan Varni, the ABC Current Series Executive in charge of production for the daytime drama series, hopes to bring back lapsed viewers.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Varni congratulated everyone at the series for their wins and thanked the fans for tuning in. However, it was his 2024  goal that was most noteworthy to followers.

In his post, Varni said, “Congrats to the hardest working crew, producers and talent, it’s a pleasure to be back with my #gh family. To our fans, thank you for sticking with us!” He added, “My 2024 goal is to win back our lapsed viewers, we have a lot of work to do but we’re all ready to work hard for YOU!”

Since it was published on Friday, the post has garnered over 131,000 views on X at press time. Comments were turned off on the post, but the hashtag “Why I Quit GH” was trending on Monday, with supposed former viewers of the show pointing out why they quit watching.

Some comments pointed out their dislike for current characters or their favorite character being killed off. Some also pointed out how certain characters weren’t getting enough airtime while others commanded too much screen time. Meanwhile, a post by X user @JBernardJones in response to Varni’s tweet was even more noteworthy in highlighting the show’s good parts and why they continue watching.

“I have many complaints about the show, but there is much to enjoy. I don’t like every decision, but these people work extremely hard to bring us over 200 shows a year under tons of pressure,” said the poster. “In the grand scheme & in light of how we’ve only 4 soaps (w/ only 3 on network tv), I’m rooting FOR #GeneralHospital & the rest in this climate, not against them.”

According to Nielsen’s most recent ratings data, “General Hospital” is slightly down from its season average among Total Viewers (Live+Same Day).

During the week of December 4-8, 2023, the most recent week in which ratings are available, the show averaged just 1.991 million viewers, down -6,000 viewers from one week prior and marking the fourth time this season the show has been below the two million viewer mark. The show was down -140,000 viewers over the comparable week in 2021, down -199,000 viewers over the comparable week in 2020 and down -49,000 viewers over the comparable week in 2019.

Note: Numbers compared to the same week in 2022 were unavailable to Soap Opera Network at press time.

In January, ABC will air a primetime special to honor the 60th anniversary of “General Hospital,” featuring several of the show’s current and former stars talking about their time working in Port Charles. The special will air following the highly anticipated LIVE wedding between Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist, titled “The Golden Wedding,” on Thursday, January 4.

In addition to winning Outstanding Daytime Drama Series during Friday’s Daytime Emmys telecast, “General Hospital” also took home four acting awards for its stars, including a posthumous win for Sonya Eddy, and the Emmy for Outstanding Directing Team for a Daytime Drama Series. On Saturday afternoon, during the Creative Arts Ceremony, the show’s legendary casting director, Mark Teschner, took home his tenth Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Casting for a Daytime Drama Series. Overall, “General Hospital” won seven Daytime Emmy Awards this year.

As for Varni, in addition to overseeing “General Hospital,” he also oversees “The Conners,” “Will Trent,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Station 19” for the network.

Good for Nathan Varni.  I agree 100% with J Bernard Jones in this X thread.  I hope GH succeeds and leads to revival of AMC and OLTL in some form in the future.

What I'd like GH to do is write more comedy into scenes.  All the regurgitated 2-actor dialog scenes are absolutely bland.  Bring on Foxy Roxy or Opal Gardner!  All of the veteran actors (playing Lois, Tracy, Scott, Lucy, Felicia, Laura, etc.) have comedic chops, too.

    • Looking at those totals it seems most contract actors are on a 1 or 2 week average guarantee. I assume contracts are still operating on 13 week cycles so you would have to know the particular actors contract starting date to work out their guarantee. The question remains as to what actors listed as contract are actually recurring? Bryton ?
    • Yep, that scene was at the conclusion of the Derek Thurston vs George Packard storyline, when Kay decided neither of them should run Chancellor.  By the time she put Victor in charge, Victor had been on the show for months & months with his Rolls Royce, his ranch, and Newman Enterprises.  SONY released some Y&R "trivia cards" in the late 1980s, and one of the questions was "who brought Victor Newman to Genoa City?" The answer on the back of the card is "Kay Thurston, to run Chancellor Industries", and it's a wrong answer lol.
    • I think someone said it did exist, but I can't remember.
    • The bit with the scarf reminds me of the fabled stuffed animal scene with Rick and Phillip. (That wasn't debunked, was it?)
    • Ohh, interesting. I instantly gravitated towards her in that episode. Of course I'm already hooked and want to know why she was trying to poison that older lady, but then how did the older lady know to switch the mugs so Susan drank her own poison...  but I have too many timelines I'm watching right now haha.  Oh, Bolger is definitely hot. I didn't realize he was on GL haha. I knew him from OLTL and other primetime stuff.
    • This is a effin shame. Eff Trump and eff the bastards that enable him.
    • I 100% agree but I think this is due to how the show is structured. It's a one family show which means there are no people in her age range that could be used as friends or contemporaries of her. The show definitely needs a second main family. I am glad someone finally said this. Especially now that the cast is gelling in their roles, he stands out like a sore thumb. No energy, no chemistry with anybody. He is just there.  I thought that was odd as well! The previous scene would've worked better as a tag for the credits.
    • That's the one and only Carrie Nye (Mrs. Dick Cavett) as Susan Piper, a deadly realtor. I don't want to spoil a lot if you ever want to see those episodes. She returns as another character in 2003. I think Grant has aged well and he always did a good job at being ripped without going too far, but he was never entirely my cup of tea either. I did think John Bolger was hot.
    • Totally agree. KKL looks great! It makes the Widge groveling so bizarre. Brooke needs to leave FC and with $B's/Liam's funding launch a rival fashion house with Hope, Rick, Katie and a secret designer. The best scenario is that Rick has been absent because he's been with very much alive C2, who is revealed on the runway as the secret designer. It'll never happen because B&B is comfortable just focusing on FC and the Forresters Marones v. Logans. But it'd been so much more interesting if the Spencers/Logans united.
