Acclaimed stage, TV and film actress Loretta Devine has joined the cast of Peacock’s “Days of our Lives: Beyond Salem,” it was announced today. She’ll portray the role of Angela when Chapter 2 of the “Days of our Lives” spinoff drops with five all-new daily episodes beginning Monday, July 11 through Friday, July 15 on the streaming service.

In addition to Devine, Eileen Davidson and Christopher Sean will reprise their roles as Kristen DiMera and Paul Narita, respectively. The cast also includes “Days of our Lives” newcomers Tanner Stine as Joey Johnson, Colton Little as Andrew Donovan and Victoria Grace as Wendy Shin. Vincent Van Patten who in real life is married to Davidson, and appeared alongside her during her time on “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” will play the role of Phil Hellworth.

Previously announced cast members for Chapter 2 include Kristian Alfonso, Peter Reckell, Deidre Hall, Drake Hogestyn, Steve Burton, Stephen Nichols, Mary Beth Evans, Abigail Klein, Lucas Adams, Camila Banus, Victoria Konefal, Robert Scott Wilson and Remington Hoffman.

In Chapter 2, beloved characters from “Days of our Lives” take part in an epic, action-packed tale spanning the globe, from Monte Carlo to Hong Kong, as they trade the comforts of home for an adventure of a lifetime! Supercouple Steve and Kayla (Nichols and Evans) make a surprise visit to their children in Seattle, while private eye John Black (Hogestyn) travels to San Francisco to see his son, Paul (Sean).

Meanwhile, new parents Ben and Ciara (Wilson and Konefal) drop anchor in Montreal – where they are greeted by a much-missed Hope (Alfonso)! Over the course of five thrilling episodes, heartwarming family reunions take a dangerous turn as a mysterious adversary wreaks havoc on their lives in a tale filled with larger-than-life romance, jaw-dropping twists, and high-stakes drama that all connects back to a memorable plot that originated on “Days of our Lives” long ago.

Winning the 2011 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Adele Webber on “Grey’s Anatomy,” Houston, Texas-born Devine is a graduate of the University of Houston with a B.A. in Speech and Drama and received her Master of Fine Arts degree in Theater from Brandeis University.

Appearing in a multitude of television shows throughout her career, including “A Different World,” “Boston Public,” “Everybody Hates Chris,” “Eli Stone,” “The Client List,” “Being Mary Jane” and “The Doc Files,” among others, Devine was the voice actor for the character of Hallie in the Disney Channel/Disney Junior series “Doc McStuffins” from 2012-2020. She more recently starred in the short-lived Netflix sitcom “Family Reunion” and has a recurring role in the Starz drama “P-Valley.”

Devine’s film roles include “Class Act,” “Waiting to Exhale,” “The Preacher’s Wife,” “Lottery Ticket,” “Dreamgirls” and “Madea’s Big Happy Family,” among a plethora of others. She’s also starred in multiple “Urban Legends” features. Set for release in August, she’ll next appear in the film “Mack & Rita” which also stars Diane Keaton, Elizabeth Lail, Taylour Paige, Dustin Milligan, Simon Rex, Nicole Byer and Wendi Malick, among others.

On the one hand, DAYS has been leaning into its Black cast and audience over the last year (thanks in large part, I suspect, to Ron's fetish for '80s nostalgia via Jackee when he never bothered writing for Black characters much on either of his prior soaps) and that's fantastic and long overdue. Loretta Devine is a legend, and DAYS' place in the NBC/Peacock hierarchy seems to be ascending towards the streaming future in a way that no other daytime soap in America has managed to sustain.

OTOH, the show is still a terrible mess creatively and it's a bit of an embarrassment.

Glad we're getting Stephanie, Joey, and FINALLY Andrew Donovan after all these years. Though I wonder is there going to be any more casting news for Beyond Salem 2? There are a few characters I would like to see come back to interact with this grouping.

    • BITD I was posting about how interesting it was that Denise had been with this same guy for simply years but they just did not marry - then that year they married!
    • Random takes from this week: - Bill’s been played way too soft by the actor. I just can’t buy him doing anything truly sinister. I wish he had more of that old-school Victor Newman edge. - On characterization: I’m fine with Leslie being shown as a narcissistic and cruel mother—as long as she doesn’t tip into full cartoon villain territory. Dani’s involvement in Nicole’s storyline feels natural to me, and I really like that Martín is such a hothead, which totally clashes with his polished political career. No wonder no one wants to confide in him. Also, I don’t mind Haley’s characterization at all. - I’m still annoyed they dropped the whole lawsuit storyline. That’s why I’m a bit hesitant about getting too invested in the June plot. Also: I can do without another instant-sibling storyline. - Ashley and Derek? Totally fine with them in small doses. That’s the best way to handle those two. - Thank God Ted is getting recast. I honestly couldn’t handle that constant swaying much longer. - Speaking of Ted: maybe I’m in the minority here, but that hotel set is hideous. The oversized boiserie makes everything look flat, and that artwork on the wall? Bland, ugly, and lifeless. - I’m 50/50 on the product placement. On one hand, it’s totally misplaced and campy—especially when it shows up in the middle of emotional scenes. It just feels wrong. But on the other hand… here we are talking about Febreze and Tide. So maybe it is working? I honestly don’t know. - I don’t have any issues with the fashion on the show overall, but André’s wardrobe is just off. Not in terms of style, but size. His tops are way too tight and actually make him look even shorter than he is. Same goes for Smitty. Both of them would seriously benefit from some larger blazers or chunkier sweaters.

Didn't know about this song. LOL. Lyrics - Junkies down in Brooklyn are going crazy They're laughing, just like hungry dogs in the street Policemen are hidin' behind the skirts of little girls Their eyes have turned the color of frozen meat No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no Joan Crawford has risen from the grave Joan Crawford has risen from the grave Catholic school girls have thrown away their mascara They chain themselves to the axles of Big Mack trucks The sky is filled with herds of shivering angels The fat lady laughs, "Gentlemen, start your trucks" No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no Joan Crawford has risen from the grave Joan Crawford has risen from the grave no, no (Christina) no, no, no, no, no (Come to mother) no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no...
